Kobbelv Vertshus

This roadside (E6) inn, half-way between Fauske and Narvik, is well worth a stop. We tried the buffet. It wasn`t up to standard for a 4-star stop, but we may have been a bit late in the day. The rooms are good and we had a view of the dark and spooky fjord below. A waterfall added to the scenery. The part of the stay that makes one stop to reflect on what went on below (underneath) this place 70 years ago, is the railway tunnel. It was part of Nazi Germanys` project to create an Arctic railway. They mainly used Russian prisoners-of-war as slave labour. From the Kobbelv Vertshus down to the old tunnel-site you find a lot of good documentation that tells the story of this death railway project. It is a pity that so many travellers merely drive past, or stay for a meal without spending a little time to see, reflect and shudder at the sight of the evil below.
