Firstly I am giving this review 2 stars 🌟 for the staff. Very accommodating and looked after us. 
Unfortunately not much else warrants a star.
No kettle in the room, you can have one made when the bar is open at a cost of approx £4.
No irons, if you need anything ironed the cleaner will take it away and return it the next day.
Breakfast is £19 per person, that’s bread, cold meats, cereal etc, nothing gold plated!
The bar was closed Friday and Saturday night and there is nothing to do in Liechtenstein.
The room was very bog standard and dated. Not worth the £800+ we paid for a double for 5 nights. 
We were very disappointed and thank god we never need to go back.
Perhaps it’s just Liechtenstein being the most expensive place in the world but simple things like a kettle make such a difference! 

Diamond star prices, youth hostel standards

Interesting hotel. You kind of feel like you have gone back in time. The decor is very... 70's. Who knew that brown, green, orange and red went so well together. Or not. The dated decor might add to the charm for some though. I felt the stay was relatively expensive given the amenities included. We did not get any information on hotel amenities such as the spa or gym during our stay. I only saw that as I left, so if you are going, ask about it. Perhaps this mysterious spa is awesome. Would have loved to been able to find out.

The good notes are that the staff was friendly. The room spacious and the beds very comfortable. The view from our room was beautiful. 

Friendly stopover

Our visit was on the 2nd january which seems to be a bank holiday in Liechtenstein.

Which brings me onto the Hotel Restaurant Schaanerhof.

We were travelling across Europe and this was to be just an overnight stay at the end of that day's 700 mile drive. The plan was shower, nice meal, bed ready for the next days' 600 mile drive.

It was about 6pm.

We went to the reception desk: no staff only keys for our room and those for another expected guest laid out in envelopes.

A guy appeared, and we were clearly not regarded as anything other than an inconvenience interrupting whatever he was doing on his laptop in the lounge.

We asked about having a drink at the bar: no that is closed.

Have a meal? No the restaurant is closed.

The guy added the rider that everything was available after the 10th January.

The room was very spacious but dated tuck somewhere about 1980 in decor. The balcony afforded a great view of the mountains.

The minibar was most understocked minibar with one already opened bottle of beer and 2 bottles of coke.

We went off into Vaduz to find for food. Everything was closed except for one Pizzeria which was pretty expensive for basic fare but beats starvation!

The castle of the ruler perches a couple of hundred feet above a city centre where architects are banned.  lego gone mad, apart from the "Ratshouse" everythig is an oblong block. It was so bring that there was nothing to interest us about returning in daylight hours.

So, back to the hotel. The beds a comfortable but with duvets with a tog level which seemed to expect the heating to break down and sub zero temperatures. The heating did not break down but the Antarctic level duvets roasted us and with a gale howling we opened the balcony door.

Breakfast was very mundane with only nice bread rolls which made it tolerable.

When a hotel boasts that it has a restaurant surely it is reasonable either to expect it to be open OR guests are made aware that on certain dates the Hotel Restaurant Schaanerhof is actual only the Hotel Schaanerhof bereft of bar or restaurant?

As to Vaduz? Unless you are banking your hot money, don't bother and ugly soulless office precinct.

Let down in Liechtenstein

For a small hotel it has many facilities including spa area (not available during my stay) and small gym, pool table and quiet areas to hang out.  The room was comfortable with good shower and balcony off main room giving views of the mountains across the Rhein valley and behind the hotel.

Friendly hotel

I had heard of this hotel and had wanted to stay for a long time. I was not disappointed. The welcome was warm, the rooms excellent, the bed comfortable and the food superb. I’ll definitely recommend to friends and will come again.
