Then you should visit this place outside the holiday season as well! We had a wonderful stay, excellent room, good dinner, a typical dutch breakfast, and above all , friendly people, and quietness!!   There you get a feel for the good aspects of the countryside, no pretense, no humbug, honesty, and food on the basis of perfect ingredients. The owner goes for quality, and achieves this quality in our view. And outside the holiday season you tast the slowness of the countryside, and that is really a blessing in our view!

When you want  the countryside at its best

The food was great at the Brasserie Restaurant bij Els at Hotel de Meulenhoek, Exloo. It's a new look and great service. We enjoyed sitting outside on a lovely summers evening. There were quite a few others enjoying the outdoor dining

This looks like a family hotel that depends on summer visitors, located in a nice village in one of the most beautiful parts of Holland. Rooms are OK and clean. Beds are good. 
We had a room in lower part of the hotel, partly under street level. According to the owner is this the coolest part of the hotel, the other rooms are situated under the roof. There is no AC. We had dinner here while passing two months ago and decided to try the hotel. 
We where welcomed nicely but after checking in we had to decend the narrow wooden stairs, while carrying our luggage. The owner accompanied us to the room but failed to ask if she could help us with the luggage (we are well above 70 years old). Nevertheless a good stay.

Reasonable/good

When my wife and I arrived, with a confirmation from a very major booking agency, we were told that we were not expected and that the hotel could not comply with the prices agreed with the booking agency, who - we were told - charged the hotel far too much. We were also told that  we were "lucky anyone was here when you were not expected". We agreed to pay what we were asked, but it left a bad taste in the mouth. The room was satisfactory, although the promised mini-bar was not present - I didn't really mind this though. Breakfast was quite good, though not good value at Euro 12.50 each per day - the coffee from a machine was mediocre.  Dinner, which in the past has been good, honest Dutch food was now over-elaborate and quite poor and expensive. I was served an acceptable, but over-cooked, rib eye steak with pears and a puree of broccoli - not my idea of a great flavour combination!
The website and other information stated that the hotel accepted credit cards. My MasterCard was refused, because "they charge us far too much". I paid with a debit card; fortunately I had sufficient funds. 
My main complaint about this hotel was the penny-pinching approach to the booking agency and to credit cards. They are not compelled to accept these, but if they say they do then they must do so. Charges to the hotel by these organisations are not my concern and I expect them to be included in what I am charged. I have stayed here 3 times before, but will not go to this hotel again.

Not as good as it used to be

Small hotel in the small town of Exloo. It’s on the main road through town so you do get a bit of road noise at night. The family room was nice size, the bathroom as well. As with most country hotels in Europe, room was clean, neat and tidy. Bath had the shower in the tub with one of those half pane glass doors that makes it difficult to take a shower without getting water all over the floor. Good supply of towels and liquid bath soap. Beds were comfortable enough. Only ventilation was opening 2 x ceiling windows. Since there’s no A/C, not sure how warm the room gets in the middle of summer. Some rather steep stairs to the second floor. Room had a small fridge and TV with English channels. Did have issues with the WiFi, only intermittent availability. 

Made my reservation through Booking.com, so assumed I could use my US Credit Card on checkout. No such luck. Was told by the management that the machine only accepts chip cards, not magnetic strip cards, because to sign up for the strip reader costs the establishment extra, hmmmmmm, have never heard that before. Note that most establishments in Europe have the strip reader taped over but I’ve always taken the tape off and successfully read the card. In any case, slight inconvenience and loss of card points, had to run over to the bank and make a quick withdrawal.

Hotel has a restaurant as well as outdoor seating. Rental bicycles are also available. Bakery and additional restaurants are just up the street.
Management speaks English. Limited parking available in the rear of the building, when that’s full only street parking available (Note, beware if you have a rental vehicle parked on the street, the EU does have its share of thievery and Air Bags are prime targets). All in all, a decent experience at the Hotel and can't think of anything that would keep me from returning.
