Hotel Klaukenhof

Great former farm in the countryside, in the same family since it was built in the 1700s. Very rural and with a real 'on the farm' feeling. We had spacious rooms with new shower rooms. Very dark and quiet at night. The hotel has a great bar at the top of the garden, in the style of a ski hut with blankets and animal skins (although there is heating!). We had loads of fun as part of a friend's birthday celebrations, with coffee & cake followed by the Sauerland Olympics (including target shooting and wood cutting), and then an excellent barbecue cooked over an open fire pit, before moving to the indoor bar for drinks. Good breakfast included ham, cheese, cereal, yoghurt, eggs and a variety of breads. We didn't eat dinner there (apart from the barbecue), but some of the smells from the kitchen were amazing. I would say that you need a car to stay here, though it's easy to book a local taxi. There are lovely walks from the door, including the tiny village further up the valley, and nice scenery. A couple of things which are good to know - the hotel doesn't take credit/debit cards so it's cash only (I think it takes some German Maestro cards); also there was handwash on the sink but no other toiletries such as shampoo/shower gel, so take your own.
