We visited for one night in June while cycling Eurovelo 13 through Finland. After several nights of wild camping, rainy days, and mosquitos, we were happy to read about this place in the otherwise sleepy town of Värtsilä.

What we loved: comfy beds, nice bathroom, clear check-in instructions and communication from staff. Patio and lawn were good for storing our bikes and drying our laundry and tents.
From my conversation with the manager, it seems like she has just taken over the property. We also seemed to be the only guests, so some of my disappointments may be chalked up to those factors.

Disappointments: probably since we were the only guests, breakfast was pre-meeting and stored in our fridge. This was convenient, but was not enough food for two hungry cyclists. Kitchen didn't include pots/pans/cooking utensils. Luckily we had our own so we could prepare dinner. Coffee was provided, but not filters for the coffee maker. Again, we had our own so it was ok. Patio and patio furniture was very dusty and covered in cobwebs. Also, since management was not onsite for check-in, we didn't know where the sauna was or if it was open. The price was a little out of our budget range, so those items kept it from being a great deal.

My final suggestion is a little more specific. There is not any sort of grocery store in town, so unless you are planning on driving somewhere or have pre-assigned meals with the property, be sure to take food! We had food with us, so we survived, but at the end of a day of cycling, a cold beer would have been amazing. Some sort of minibar in the room or honor  bar in reception could be welcome for  weary travelers to purchase snacks and drinks.



Luxury in the countryside

You'll hardly believe you've arrived at a hotel,  when you drive in a courtyard. It's a small terraced house,  presumably earlier a service home for senior citizens. It's a small hotel with only 8 rooms. The rooms are spacious and stylishly decorated with a kitchenette. Every room has a terrace facing Jänisjoki , Rabbit river. You are warmly welcomed and you can relax in sauna, which is included in the room price. There is not much activities in the surroundings,  but if you are looking for a peaceful place to relax, you' ll find it here. Niirala crossing border to Russia is only 5 km away, but you need a visa to cross the  border. The Russian border is only 2 km south east from the hotel. If you want to eat at the hotel, you'll need to pre-book it. Otherwise the nearest restaurant is 20 km away.

I stayed two nights in Hotel Joki in end of May. My main focus was birdwatching in Värtsilä area so this hotel was perfectly located. Staff were absolutely great and that reason only it is worth coming back some day.

Room was very spacious and clean. It had a small kitchen with necessary equipments. Bathroom was also spacious. I also went to Sauna in the first evening as the staff kindly warmed it up beforehand. It was great! Wifi in the room worked smoothly. Breakfast tray was delivered in the room in the evening and I was very happy about it, because I left birding very early in the morning. There is a bird tower about 400m away.

So basically I did not find anything to complain about. If I ever go near by and I need place to stay, this hotel would be my first choice.

Great hotel in country side

I stayed here a few nights in autumn of last year. I felt very welcome, the hosts are very friendly and helpful. The location was very peaceful next to a river and nature. The rooms were pretty big with a small kitchen where you can cook your own food all furniture is there you need. The beds slept very good and the bathroom was satisfying. Every room has an own terrace with view on the river. Will certainly come back this summer!

best hotel in Finland with very friendly staff

We loved this stylish hotel beside the river. We were on a birdwatching trip so the hotel made a good base as this is an area where some of Finland's rarer birds may be seen.
   Excellent food and delightful staff who could not have been more helpful. Highly recommended.
