This hostel has amazing atmosphere. The owner is very welcoming and helpful. He has lots of knowledge of the area and is always happy to socialize.
I mentioned that I wanted to learn to salsa and he set up a lesson in the hostel. What a great experience!

Amazing hostel

Dear fellow travellers,
Together with my boyfriend we stayed for 4 nights in this small, relaxed and cosy hostel in SAN Cristóbal. The owner Angel is great and an amazing host. He knows everything about the area and can help you out with all your questions. We very much enjoyed the tranquil atmosphere and the private room upstairs in the hostel. The place feels very secure and well taken care of, especially the breakfast!!
We would definitely stay here again and would highly recommend hostel Akumal to everyone. Thank you Angel for all you help. Best Gianna and Oliver from the Netherlands

Best hostel! And amazing breakfast & host

I booked after reading great reviews but unfortunately Angel was not around during our stay and the woman in charge was absolutely useless when we had several issues:

Security: we had the private double en-suite room which is above the common room, connected by steps but closed off with a wooden board and padlock, which is fine, we entered via the terrace. However, one evening we returned and the board had been removed, padlock was on the floor and our room was totally open to the common room. We immediately told the woman working reception and she could not care less, literally said she didn’t see why it was a problem. (Private rooms have no locker or safe so our passports, cards etc were sat right there.) 

Staff: the second issue was that on the last day there was no water at all in the whole hostel. This may have been out of their control, but, again the woman in charge was SO unhelpful. We had to check out but since we had a late bus, asked if we could come back before our bus to shower if they had water by then (in the shared showers, we weren’t asking for our room back) and she just said, “probably no water”. No apology or explanation of why. 

Stained bedding: sheets and pillows were covered in stains.

Extremely noisy: because the private room is connected to the common area, you hear every conversation as well as the construction works next door.

I was so disappointed with this place, if Angel had been around it might have been better, but unfortunately he wasn’t there during any of the issues. 

Shocking security, no water, useless reception, dirty

Fantastic place! Centrally located and with great service. We were very well welcomed and taken care of. Great English speaking as well which helped us a lot. So grateful for the service level as I forgot a valuable after leaving and they were so helpful and friendly. They found it and will help me to get it returned! So grateful for this! Would recommend to stay at this place as it’s both centrally, fresh, good service and breakfast included! Thanks for a great visit

Amazing stay at Hostal Akumal 

We stayed in a lot of hostels throughout Central America, and this is the only one we have made an effort to write a review for, due to how much we enjoyed our stay and how much we appreciated the host, Angel. Angel was an absolutely amazing host. He had breakfast ready for us every morning and happily does anything and everything possible to help his guests. Angel organised day trips for us and took us to the doctors to translate twice when my partner had an excruciating pain in his ear from an infection. We stayed in the private room upstairs, which was affordable, clean and huge. It had a private bathroom and two double beds, so we could have easily fitted another two friends. If we return to San Cristobal in the future, we will definitely stay in Angel's hostel again.

Our Favourite Hostel in Central America

Welcoming host, delicious breakfast, perfect location, great local tips, quiet, wonderful log fire if you get cold. We loved it here and extended for an extra 2 nights. Would’ve stayed longer but someone else snapped the room up. Perfect if you want to relax and feel at home.
