Haus Sonneck

A group of 5 friends on a 4-night ski break. From the outset, owner Hans was friendly and helpful. He's a likeable gent who efficiently runs a clean and tidy pension. The Sonneck is about a 5 minute walk from the heart of Gerlos; turn right out the door and follow the footpath to the main street rather than left and along the road you arrived on. Both gondolas in Gerlos are 3 - 400 metres away. There are 6 three-bed rooms over the first and second floors. Each has a balcony. The two we had were very comfortable with a great shower. There are no TV's or tea-making facilities. The wi-fi is very good throughout the building. Breakfast is what you'd expect in Austria: it's fresh and there is plenty of it. The breakfast room doubles up as a lounge area where Hans seemed happy to let us sup our own beer and spirits on the one occasion we bypassed the crazy Gerlos Apres Ski (Cin Cin and Little London are packed to the rafters every night). It wasn't difficult to persuade him to join us! He's of a smiley disposition and chatty with it. Skiing is wonderful in Gerlos. There are ample runs across the spectrum to keep you occupied for a week. Expect a little queuing during peak times, but nothing to raise the blood pressure. You've got to try the longer of the two blacks down into Zell am Zillertal! For a great meal, try the Milchbar in town. Get there before 7pm to avoid a half hour wait, but it's worth the wait anyway. I'd say the Sonneck is great for small groups or couples.
