Travelled with 50+ teenagers on a 3 day trip. The Danish hosts made us feel welcome, served great food and had patience with us (it did get a bit noisy). Rooms were nice and the common areas were new and in simple Nordic design - very pleasant. The view towards Gaustadtoppen is amazing! Wifi, parking, a small kiosk, sauna and you can go for a swim in the lake! I will come back to this place!

Great location, nice rooms, Danish hospitality and food!!

Amazing place, lovely environment with a lot of spirit. Open and talkative visitors and personell. Can only recommend visiting. It's not a hotel, it feels more like a home placed in amazing Norwegian nature with a great view of Gaustatoppen. The surrounding area is perfect for cross-country and great for alpine as well.


Been here many winters! 

The room was in very good condition and clean, with a very beautiful mountain view. The staff was very helpful and helped us find contacts for the activities that we wished to do during our stay. The cosy fireplace, sauna and small movie theater were good additions to make our stay more enjoyable. Also the common kitchen was really convenient to use, in clean condition and quite big.

Very friendly staff, good service even during the off-season

Kvitåvatn Fjellstue has a wonderful view to the mountain Gaustatoppen, and it's a perfect place for people who want to go hiking in the summertime or go skiing in the winter. It's plenty of alpine hills just outside the door, and you are living in the nature, literally speaking.

When that is said, there is practically no service on this place. The man in the reception were all smiles, really nice - but the reception is closed large parts of the day.

Also, you need to bring everything you need with you. There is no towels in the room, you will have to rent them for 40 NoKr for each set. You also have to make the beds yourself, and there is no shampoo in the bathroom.

The rooms has a fantastic view, and a nice veranda with the best view in this part of Norway. But even if we had a double room, there was only 1 wooden chair in the room (which you don't want to spend any time in), a tiny writing desk, and that's all. No pictures, no carpets, no nothing. And that was a room that can take 4 people.

The rooms are not nice in any way, and not a place you want to be other than to sleep. On the veranda there was two chairs, but no table. If you bring something out there to watch the beautiful view, you will have to place it on the floor.

As such, this is something you would expect from a youth hostel in the 70es.

The dinner is cheap, but isn't worth much either. We got a carrot soup for starter, and a roast as the main course. With it it was boiled green peas and fried potatoes. (We could also get some salad) The thing is that the food had no taste what so ever. Absolutely tasteless, and the sauce didn't help. That tasted like water. So I can't recommend anyone to eat there.
The breakfast, on the other hand, was rather nice. I have to say I was really surprised after the "dinner" experience the day before.

All in all, there is nothing to do inside this place, which shows up if you search for Hotels in Rjukan. 3 star even. And this has nothing what so ever to do with what you call a hotel. There is no bar or anything - no restaurant either.

But, if you want to make your own food, and you are planning to use the nature around, it's OK for having a cheap accommodation (compared to the other possibilities in the area).
Should you want to buy a good dinner, it's only a few hundred meters away anyway - so it's not a real problem.

Take it for what it is. And if you have children, this place should be great :)

Don't expect this to be a hotel

Arrived with my father, the Kvellstue was not officialy opened yet for the seaon but all the amenities were available for us, including the sauna! Amazing location and a lot of trails starting from the building. 

Amazing location, helpful personnel!

You have to pay for the beauty of this country and that is by no means a complaint.  I wanted to visit Rjukan to visit the museum which remembers the 'Heroes of Telemark' but couldn't afford much. 

I had never stayed in a hostel before but I am glad I decided to spend the night here. As you would expect of this remarkable country, nature is on your doorstep. There are 21 rooms some with a shower / wc and there is a large kitchen and dining room. Although not sharing I had a double room which was clean and typically Scandinavian, and while my particular accommodation didn't have a w.c / shower there was one conveniently opposite the corridor.

I thoroughly recommend a stay here (remember we are talking about a hostel and not a hotel) whether you have tried hostels before or not, whether you are a family with children or not. As you would expect of this child friendly country there are family rooms.

Budget Accommodation doesnt mean Slumming!

Got one of the cabins with shared bathroom. Pricing was alright at 625kr per night, and the view and surroundings are also great of course. The rooms have 2 floors with beds on both floors. Bathrooms were clean as well. Was quite hot sleeping though.

A fair experience overall, and pricing was alright.

Decent place

A truly idyllic Norwegian wilderness -near the Hardangervidda Park. Ski hire very reasonable. Accommodation in Arney Hus cosy but warm, comfortable- and a sauna! Meals in main lodge were homely , filling and served with a smile. Packed lunch fillings varied. Vegetarian options if ordered. Staff very helpful. Evenings by fire after a hard day on trails were bliss. View from main room of Gaustatoppen spectacular- when you could see it. It snowed a lot- one day of sun! Do take time to drive to the Vemork museum - 30mins- to learn how the heavy water factory was destroyed by heroic Norwegian commandos in 1943. All in all a great value holiday. Posh it ain’t. But it was homely and it felt properly Norwegian. 

Nordic Skiing 

Fantastic facility, flexible options for accommodation type, friendly helpful staff, gorgeous food, great transport bus link provided by the fjellstue to/from Gardermoen airport to Kvitavatn...can't wait to return again later this summer season with another group :)

great place to be in after the gaustatoppen hike..the new cabins we stayed in were superb..great showers and toilet..comfortable beds..good common areas with outstanding views..very friendly staff..average food..
