Gasthof Kilian

Gasthas Kilian is quite convenient to the main highway and wasn't too difficult to find. We were taken aback a little (in time?) when we went to register in the bar. A smoky haze filled the air. This place must be a time capsule from the days when you could still smoke in a bar in Europe (how long ago was that?) Big turnoff. Fortunately our room didn't smell. Reasonably clean but behind the bathroom door and other little corners there were signs of a hasty cleaning. The room had three beds and was quite cramped - if travelling with mother-in-law, get her another room! (In our previous room in another Austrian B&B we had two rooms for a couple Euros more than the price of this one.) There was no view out the high window - just a roof. Internet is included and there was an interesting magazine in the room (forget the cable if you don't speak German). Without that it would have been a tough evening since the bar was out. The area looked nice for a walk (an interesting building up the road to see, pretty area) but we were tired and didn't go out. There's a lot of pine furniture, "booky" corners, which at least let you escape the cramped room. It looks rather like a hunter's lodge and you can take pictures with the stuffed baby bear on the landing. The highlight was definitely not the night spent with two snorers in a small room. It was breakfast. This place knows how to serve breakfast. A big plate of cold cuts and cheese (being there were three of us, we got two plates.) Lots of rolls, more coming to our table when the hostess noticed we had finished ours, great coffee, juice and eggs. Good service. We might go back for the breakfast but in a room for two.
