Falcon Ridge House

Two families totally eight stayed here for 7 nights from 9th Jan 2016. The house was just fantastic, comfortable, clean, convenient to slopes and on top of a fabulous bar and eatery.  The laundry facilities were brilliant, the kitchen very well equipped for self catering.  There was plenty of room and a mezzanine floor where the kids could retreat in the evening to play games. The furnishings were very comfortable and the western style beds very comfortable.  It was a 10 minute walk to the Goryu gondola which was easy to do especially if you store your ski gear near the gondola.  The nearest supermarket is a short ride by taxi and everything you could need is available however market very busy in the afternoons.  We used the buses from Escal Plaza near the gondola to get into Happo One but didn't need to leave our spot except to satisfy our curiosity that we were indeed in the best spot for us.   The rail station closest to Falcon Ridge is Kamishiro, about a ten minute easy walk to house.  The hosts of the house and bar, Dee and Ross were friendly, helpful and hospitable.  We will happily send our friends to Falcon Ridge is they need a beautiful place to stay.

We loved our stay here! Clean rooms, fabulous hosts, great homemade breakfasts, and perfect location. 5 minutes from the hill, 10 minutes from the local onsen, and great bar downstairs. We were well taken care of and felt like part of the family. Could not have been happier with our stay here!

A big house (by Japanese standards)  sunny and close to the ski lifts - and we had it all to ourselves! The owners also run it as a B and B but if the group is large enough, you can have it as a holiday rental. We were a couple, two friends of different sexes and three kids, so with four rooms it was perfect for us. We used to live in Japan, so we know most places are quite poky, so this place with its big rooms with lots of storage was a great find. It has two living rooms, which are great for relaxing, most places don't as the Japanese aren't into that, they "just use a lodge for eating and sleeping. The shuttle bus to the slopes is at the end of a short street, it was only seven minutes door to snow. When we told the owners the age of our children, they organised ski hire clothing and had it waiting for us which was so convenient as our kids had never seen the snow before and we wanted them to get right into it. There is a bar/restaurant called Bike Bar underneath, we ordered food and they bought it up to us as we didn't want to take the kids out in the snow - or cook! The hamburgers and pizza were all made there and were pretty good. It was also handy for the boys to kick on and have a drink, leaving the rest of the family happy upstairs!

A modern house almost to ourselves, great Western food with home-made bread (the normal stuff in Japan is like white rubber) and a nice, big living room, we just loved this place. We have skied in Hakuba Goryu twice before and stayed in Japanese-owned places but the funny thing is that they were small, run-down and not at all Japanese looking (frilly floral bedspreads anybody?) yet this place was furnished with Japanese antiques and interesting objects. Our room was a special suite with carved doors and paper window screens, it had an adjoining sitting room and even though sitting at a low table wasn't really for us, it was lovely to look at. It didn't cost any more than the run-down Japanese places we had stayed at, even though it was all newly done-up. There aren't any en-suite bathrooms either but as it is only small, it wasn't a problem. Watching the snow fall down as we had breakfast was just beautiful too.

Misleading online description &  unfit accommodation. A proper home but not the hospitality.

We booked our accommodation in Hakuba through Airbnb, chosen the 'Sweet and petite and dinner too' b&b and turned out to be someone else's house - bike bar or better known as two rooms. We visited Hakuba last 2 weeks with our kids. Chosen this accommodation trusting the  descriptions and photos online as we're expecting a Japanese home experience. We ended with unpleasant experience as follow:

Two rooms owner is a middle person to a few b&b accommodations advertised on Airbnb. We booked 'sweet and petite and dinner too' with meal plan that owned by Japanese couple earlier, the night before we check in, we were offered by the middle person to stay in 'two rooms' instead, as the boiler of 'sweet and petite and dinner too' is spoilt. It was a very last minute message we received and we thought it's too risky to cancel as we were departing in the next few hours and so we accepted the offer by adding 6000 yen for additional persons. But we didn't know we stay in the middle person's house actually.

- As soon as we arrived, we found the house is unfit for guests as it's a very private home that gave us a sense of uneasiness. The house is big, but it's not locked even at night. Our room doesn't have a lock and there are 2 doors to access to our room. Anyone can come into the house or room, but owner said it's safe. Even if they go out, the house is still unlock at all times. If you want a little privacy, this is not what you want and I wasn't informed about this.

- Upon checking in till the last night we were constantly warned not to simply touch things, especially the kitchen. 

- We expressed our thoughts of the place upon checking in and like to cancel the stay as it's not suitable for our family with kids around, the house is decorated in every corner with glasses and such. On the second day, my son accidentally broke their table lamp and we paid for the damage.

- Promised home made breakfast and dinner in the previous posting. Breakfast is a joke, plain toast, banana, cereals, jams, and milk only. Bike bar's review said home made bread every morning and delicious breakfast that not to be missed. As for dinner, we spent 2 nights, we weren't offered any dinner at all. Host didn't even show us anything about the house until I asked where's the bath room. I had to ask everything through Airb&b messenger, not all my questions answered spontaneously. And after we confessed we would like to cancel the stay on the first night, she never replied my questions on Airbnb messenger ad never showed up anymore. Instead, had her husband answered our questions. When we checked out I found out they didn't even offer wifi password. Luckily we rented 1 portable one earlier.

- The second night was snowing heavily, we were driving all day without a problem until around 7pm we came back for asthma medicine, and our car stuck in the snow in front of the house. They knew they have guest who is driving, why left the driveway covered in thick snow? He said you shouldn't drive a 2wd car here! Stairway to the home is also covered in thick snow, we slipped a few times. Need 4wd for that too? We had to clear the snow ourselves in order to walk to the house. We headed back half way just to get the medicine, but got stuck in front of the house, we went in and out the house for 3 times at least and cleared the snow on the stairs and road, even the neighbour came out to help. After almost 45 minutes, we saw the owner closing the curtain only we knew they were at home, then we quickly went in and asked for help again. His first response was: we are at home all the time, why didn't you call us earlier? I told him, we were in and out and we didn't see you are at home, we called out a few times but no one answered. We cleared the snow and our car is still stuck at the front. About this, we are seriously stunned and luckily he helped us to tow the car in the end and cleared the road before we were back. 

- Major communication problem when you have questions with the room, they don't give phone numbers and only accept message via Airbnb. They expect guests to have Internet access all the time? There's no briefing on the house at all unless you ask when you happen to see them, we need to figure things out when they are not around. When we raised questions, owner only answer us in a very sarcastic way. For example, I told owner about the bathroom is too cold, I saw a heater remote on the wall, but I don't think it's functioning. He answered me: hey, the whole Japan's bathrooms are not heated, you should know that! I answered him, at least Kyoto's have, I just wondered why the heater controller is there but when I turn it on, there's nothing happen. Obviously the house wasn't prepared for us, then why still offer to us and when we asked questions, owner just tried to ignore and didn't willing to just listen or try to understand?

- Toilet and bathroom are dirty, especially the bathroom and wash basin. I had to clean them before I started using them. Took bath in the zero degree bathroom half way but couldn't find hair dryer and had to email to ask before I continued to take bath. The bathroom is freezing cold and there's no curtain. The living room and entrance are much warmer than the guests room, heater not functioning well and they didn't pre-inform which button not to press, until we asked the next day and ended up owner said: "it's been functioning well, I don't want to argue!" I was stunned to hear that, I didn't want a fight, but why as the guests that pay can't just give the feedback? Furthermore we were asking in a polite way and he just refused to listen. It's so rude, instead of showing that 'don't care' face plus repeating saying that 'I don't want to argue', why not just show a little courtesy by saying sorry and let me fix it? What he expected us to do with a not functioning well heater middle of the night with 2 young kids in the room? We couldn't sleep and had to try exploring how to make the heater work and owner only blamed why we readjusted the  heater, while we desperately needed to heat the room up? 

Overall it's the worst experience to us, I accepted the very last minute notification of the previous booking's house's boiler is out of order and it's too cold to stay in. We never got a prove on that and trusted Dierdre. We felt regretted and humiliated to stay with such unwelcoming owner. It's not that we didn't pay, as the guests, we have the rights to ask and it's not fair to be treated this way! We are frequent travellers and we always booked through Travelmob, airbnb, hotels.com, agoda, etc. We don't need to be reminded many times: 'hey, this is what bed & breakfast do'. We had no problem at all these years with any hotels booking agents, this is the first and only worst. So, please don't book from this owner or you'll end up in disappointment!
