Commercial Hotel Bed and Breakfast

We really enjoyed our stay here.  We were in a river facing room with ensuite. Room was large, clean and the view amazing. The bed was huge and so comfortable.

The continental daily breakfast was lovely and enough for us - juice, tea, coffee, toast, cereals, yoghurts.

The building itself is magnificent and well looked after. The owners were friendly and very helpful.

We'd definitely stay again.



The Commercial Hotel was built in the 1800s as a hotel for traders, so it's not a modern, new building like you'd expect from a chain. This hotel, instead, has character and charm along with really high ceilings and a marvellous verandah (which was what attracted me).

I was concerned about a shared bathroom but found it to be clean and it allowed for good privacy. There is also a TV/lounge for guests to relax in as well as tea and coffee in the hallway. 

The rooms are big enough for singles or couples and have a small sink and mirror for teeth brushing and shaving, plus a lovely big window that looks out onto the verandah and the river. I managed to feed a power cable through the window and onto the verandah for my laptop as the WIFI was the fastest I've had in NZ! 

The owners of the Commercial Hotel are lovely and they will happily chat about the area and about the hotel - I joined them for breakfast the next morning in the big dining room and it felt like being with a family. 

As for the sleep, I slept so well that I didn't hear the sirens go off during the night to call the volunteer firefighters in. They went off 3 times! That said, if you're a light sleeper, maybe take some earplugs?

Make sure you ask for a river-view room when you book and you will not be disappointed with this stay. It's a great stop before going to see the Kauri trees or to break up the drive back to Auckland from further north.

I would never hesitate to stay here again!

Very friendly owners helpful and energetic. Perfect venue for group functions. Food is served on site for breakfast. The views are magnificent and the hotel is easy to find and a short walk along the river front to the local cafes as you please.

Such a great night's sleep - a must stay

Great views over the mighty Wairoa River staying in a historic building

I booked my room 1 year ago after the last Fieldays and also rang and confirmed the booking 3 months out, nice room with a view of the river and a bathroom.  When I got there I had been moved to a small room outside with a shared bathroom.  I am sure I was bumped because of the Saturday night wedding.

Also the wifi did not make the outside rooms so I was told I had to work inside the main building, they had a wifi extender but did not want to give me the password for it.  Frustrating when you are there for work.

I just found the whole customer service and communication poor.

Really can’t say anything positive about this place. We knew before we arrived that it was really budget but the penny pinching is next level. The hot water and fridges are turned off during the day. When you use the washing machine with your own soap and despite no signage get charged $15, you start to get the picture. As for customer service, be prepared that everything is too much trouble. Would never go back
