Chateau de la Ronce

Beautifully renovated Chateau on the outskirts of the lovely village of La Bouille.  While we did not dine there, we enjoyed the lovely grounds and the beautiful interior.  Our bathroom was large and spotless.  We were delighted to be staying here halfway through our travels.   The owners/staff were charming also.

Part of me doesn't want to post this review as I want to keep Ronce a secret. However that approach won't help Alain and his wonderful chateau. 

We visited between Christmas and new year and sort of expected the chateau to be cold. What we found was a chateau that was beautiful, cosy and warm. Our room was spacious, warm and elegant and the bathroom with its large shower and stand alone bath was delightful.

As we took our golden retriever, we were delighted that Max was made welcome and that the chateau had over five hectares of its own woodland. Every morning we spent an hour walking around the chateau's private woods featuring multiple walks and caves, amazing!

Possibly the highlight of the break was the meal we had at the chateau. For 35€ per head, we had a meal that was as good as any we have ever experienced. Sitting in the beautiful dining room, we experienced French food at its best and complimentary wine, simply wonderful

We stayed for 1 night over here on our way to the south. It's a beautifully restored chateau, we had the Gauguin room on the second floor, view on the seine, great bed and a very nice bathroom.

The chateau is in front of the river (road in between) and has walking paths at the backside. We stayed for dinner (35€ pp 4 courses, wine/drinks included) and found it great value for money. Breakfast is buffet style.

In all a convenient stopover on our way to the south.

A beautiful Chateau

An amazing discovery

On August 18th we stayed at the Chateau de la Ronce. The property is very nice and totally refurbished. So only positives about the accomodation. The staff and their politeness on the contrary are totally reversing the positive experience into something negative. 

Some more background...
We were traveling by bike from Rouen to Cherbourg and wanted to stay at the castle. Before arriving we called and asked whether we could still have diner. At that moment it was 21:00 and we were told that diner needed to be ordered upfront but that we could have diner at La Bouille which was 5 km away from the chateau. I asked when we needed to arrive and the answer was "prenez votre temps" which means "take Your time". We arrived at La Bouille at 21:30 and had diner until 22:30. Then we got a very unfriendly telephone that we should come immediately or our booking would be canceled. We immediately rode to the castle and were treated in a very very impolite way. Even if the host saw we had our bikes with us, he did not even propose where we could store these safely. He also made remarks which were totally not done. 

I would have accepted to be treated like that if I would have been told an exact hour to show up and would have been an hour late without notifying. I called however upfront and was told to take my time, so...

Net a very disappointing experience. I have a hotel myself and always learned to smile whatever happens. 

In this chateau it is not the case. And the simple reason is that people start up businesses like this and learn that running a hotel/B&B business is much less idyllic than at first sight.

Luckily we have been better hosted in similar locations during the remainder of this trip.

Excellent location - Poor staff and service

Overlooking the rather shabby gardens and exterior we were heartened by the interior. Public rooms were well furnished and decorated with numerous fine antiques. The rooms on the top floor were spacious with good bathrooms. Linens were nice and crisp. All in all a nice hotel. Shame about the restaurant
