Changani Beach Cottages

We totally enjoyed the most beautiful and serene ocean view from room 11. Lovely sunrise and sunset accomoanied by cool drinks....I feel so relaxed. Also enjoyed some calamari a nd fresh fish. Keep it up.

A perfect getaway for couples. Excellent service from the staff! Food is amaizing, the beach, view from the private cottage is lovely! Oh the breakfast was indeed perfect. Would recommend a visit to this paradise. 

Down a rough track. You will probably need a four wheel drive to get there, but it's worth it.
    The main buildings, restaurant area and swimming pool are situated in a jungle area above and behind the lovely, deserted, tropical beach. The several cottages are located in secluded areas in the jungle. The food was good and the staff were excellent. It's about a 10 minute walk down the hill, along the path, through the jungle to the beach where there are a few more hotel buildings.

Friendly staff.. a good choice of accommodation for large family or small group. You have a choice of the Swimming pool or a walk down a short distance through mangrove trees to the most amazing beach front !

A beautiful location and surroundings at Sisi Changani. The staff were attentive and helpful during our stay. We loved having the place to ourselves and had a great time
using the pool and beach. 

The location was lovely but a good 15 minute drive down a track so make sure you bring all of your supplies with you.

However, the food and drink was very overpriced for what it was. There was nothing special about the menu and paying 25,000 for an average meal was not worth it. The breakfast food  was nice but didn’t deliver what was on the menu. For example it said pancakes with honey but all they were able to provide us with was rose syrup for cocktails. Also it said they had paneer on the menu but none in the kitchen. A real shame that the restaurant let us down. Bring your own water and alcohol (unless you want to pay 5000 for a bottle of water).

The rooms were very nice, spacious and well equipped. The shower was very poor, very low pressure and never hot. We had to ask for the hot water to be turned on and even then it was very inconsistent.

We did have a really nice time here and this was made better by the good deal we had because of COVID-19, however I would question how good it would be if paying full price.

We just spent the weekend at Changani Beach Resort for a group weekend getaway. It took us about 1.5 hours to get there from the Dar es Salaam. I had a cottage and they converted one bed into two for sharing. The beds were comfortable and the rooms clean. I did not like the setup of no bathroom door and a half wall between the shower/toilet and the sleeping area.  I never understand why anyone thinks this is a good idea. The food was very good. I had a a few of the prawn dishes and American pancakes for breakfast. The staff was very attentive and kind. Sometimes the food takes a while but it's certainly fresh when it comes to you. I would caution that to get to the beach area you have to walk down quite a few steps. Once on the beach, there is are large areas of shade to lounge in. That's a very nice feature. I did not use the pool. It's quite a distance from the beach area but it was close to my room. The monkeys liked playing in that area. Beach area is okay. The waves were pretty rough but I don't know if that's common. There's enough room to play volleyball or walk on the beach.

My family and I (husband, his parents, and our 1 year old daughter) visited Changani Beach Cottages for a three night getaway at the end of December. The weather was perfect and we thoroughly enjoyed the beach and the pool. I really liked the beach area as it had a large covered sitting area with a bar (is that what you call it if they don’t serve alcohol?) and was the perfect place for my daughter and mother-in-law to hang out in the shade. It was nice and cool under the beach cabana and the perfect place to take an afternoon nap in a hammock. 

I know I write pretty long reviews, so before you get bored and move on, my four take away recommendations would be: 1) bring cards to play, books to read, or some sort of game. The pool, beach, meals, and fire pit can keep you busy enough but I wish we had brought a card game to play at night after eating dinner. 2) if you want to drink alcohol I recommend packing it and bringing it with you. The resort does not sell alcohol but they offer to send a bike messenger to purchase beer or wine. I think it would have been easier to just bring it our own cooler then to try to estimate how many beers we would have at lunch or how many glasses or wine we would want for dinner. 3) I recommend making your reservation by contacting the resort directly. That will help avoid the mix-up we had (see below) as having to unpack and then pack again to move all of your luggage and baby crib in the middle of your “relaxing” day is never ideal. 4) this resort is not for handicapped guests as there are a lot of steep steps and uneven walkways. It is part of the resorts rustic charm but I don’t see how anyone in a wheelchair (or someone like my brother who has trouble walking long distances) could stay here. I would also think twice before bringing a toddler unless you have someone to help (see below).

The food here is delicious - breakfast was my favorite and I think it is worth waking up early for! We each ordered either porridge or pancakes so I can not personally attest to any of the egg dishes (banana porridge with American pancakes, cinnamon porridge with coconut pancakes, or American Pancakes - all were served with honey and a side of fruit). For lunch we ordered beef and chicken paninis with a side of chips and were able to eat down at the beach (which is a really nice option because it is about a 10 min walk from the cottages to the beach and we had a lot of stuff to carry - including the baby, ha)! The dinners were tasty as well but we thought the portions for this meal were a little on the small side (at least compared to our American-sized standards). With that said, the night I ordered beef stew and rice, I left the table completely stuffed!  There is not a whole lot of variety with the food options but they have what you need (or will send a bike messenger to get it if they don’t). For instance, at each meal they had at least one vegetarian option. 

When we first arrived, there was an issue with our booking (which we made through Airbnb). Apparently the cottage we reserved was already booked and not available. The manager was very apologetic and was able to put us into two smaller cottages for the first night and then we moved into the original large cottage for the next two nights. I thought the smaller cottages were very spacious. They are round huts with a shower/toilet on one side and a bed on the other - separated by a wall in the center. They each had an AC unit and everyone in our party agreed it was really cold inside the cottage at night. The shower area could probably be updated but otherwise, I found them to be very clean. There was enough space for us to be able to put our baby’s pack-and-play crib at the foot of our bed and have the mosquito net wrap around it too. I found the small, one room cottage to be more spacious than the room in the larger three room cottage (especially if you’re traveling with a baby and crib). The larger cottage that we moved into was nice as well. It is listed as having three bedrooms but only two are enclosed and air conditioned (one bedroom was an open air loft in the balcony). When we arrived, there were four monkeys on the bed upstairs, so we opted to stay in the downstairs rooms. What I would consider the master bedroom was really nice (but a tight fit with the baby crib). The bathroom looked more modern than the one-room cottage, but we had trouble with the shower drain and it flooded the bedroom. The resort’s handy man was able to fix it and he called housekeeping who helped mop it up. The third room was also a bit smaller than the one-room cottages we stayed in the first night, and it’s bathroom was located outside. Not quite ideal for my in-laws who frequent the toilet throughout the night, but it was okay. The larger cottage also seemed very clean. 

The balcony was really cool and a major attraction for us. It was nice to put the baby to bed and sit out on the balcony just relaxing and talking. You can see the Indian Ocean in the distance beyond the tree line and the stars at night are really bright. Without my in-laws traveling with us though, it would have been pretty tough to stay here with a toddler who is learning to walk and who is constantly testing her boundaries. There are large gaps in the fences that a toddler can easily climb/crawl through, the steps are steep and uneven, and there are a ton of bugs for a toddler to try to put into her mouth. There were not many safe spaces for a toddler to roam, but I think that is probably true of most resorts. In hindsight, I wish I had packed dish soap to wash our daughter’s bottles and cups but the kitchen staff was nice enough to help us clean them. It would have also been difficult for us to eat dinner as our daughter typically goes to sleep around 6 and dinner didn’t start until 7. We had to eat in shifts so that someone was always at the cottage with the baby. 

Overall, I found the staff to be very friendly (especially the waitresses at the restaurant - they cleaned my baby’s bottles and even left milk in the fridge for us to grab early in the morning), the resort to be clean, the food delicious, and a relaxing beach atmosphere. The resort is rustic (so don’t expect fancy) but I think that is a lot of this place’s charm. It was one of the best beaches I have ever been to and worth at least a day pass if not spending the night.

customer service was great fantastic! Gorgeous white sand beach!
Food was amaizing for sure but bloody expensive i mean fried changu and chips for 30,000 is a rip off! Then theres this entrance fee of 5000, you spend almost 300,000 on food for a family of 6 and then pay on top 30,000 as entrance! Ridiculous! Just a suggestion atleast offer free water or juice once entrance fee is paid or waive it off if theres a whole family who will spend alot more on food!!
Thats all otherwise amaizing place have been there enough times and will go back but if it doesnt change on these few items will definitely look somewhere else!!

Needs to improve on some few items!

I liked this place a lot a few years ago. Now, it's really disappointing. The rooms need a paint job and the roofs need fixing. There's been a leak in our room the last couple of times we were there. Issues with hot water. The ceiling fan was super noisy. The AC remote did not work, so it was impossible to turn it on. The staff brought a standing fan, which helped somewhat. This said the staff are super nice and want to help though seem to have their hands tied by the new management, not willing to invest in basic maintenance. Lovely location but so overpriced at this point.

Overpriced and poorly maintained

Visited the place during the new year 01 01 22. Situated in a serene location, but poorly managed. This place has seen no maintenance in about 10 years or so. Swimming pool had the algae green color water with smell of chlorine.
 De-motivated and not so helpful staff, near the beach area the toilets were dirty and smelly.

 Food and drinks are priced 4-5 times more expensive than that of the normal price .  But they have compensated the high price by reducing the portion size to about half than normal !!! lol.

We used to go to this place a lot few years ago. But I won't recommend this to anyone now..
