Le Vieux Presbytere is a warm and comfortable escape from the contemporary world, down to the church bells and roosters that are the only noises you'll hear. We love the emptiness of the Gers region, and this gite is perfectly located to make the most of that tranquility but also not be too far from the villages and markets that we also love. Jackie and Richard have turned one end of their old house into two two-story apartments, and the result is a wonderful combination of solitude and company around the pool, coming and going, and in the lovely gardens. Most important, our hosts were a wealth of suggestions and help-- from the perfect restaurant and armagnac experience to doing laundry, even inviting us to join them and their friends for an evening garden party one night. They will also cook, so we arranged with them to have dinner prepared for us the night we arrived, and the meal was delicious. The apartment itself is charming, spacious, and well-appointed, particularly the bedroom, a welcome relief from small French hotel rooms, and the bed and linens were perfect. Although there is no air conditioning and we were there during a heat wave, the traditional construction and contemporary renovation meant that by closing up the house during the day we were more than comfortable when we opened it up at night. The kitchen came complete with enough salt, pepper, sugar, and dish detergent to get us through the week, and there were wine and cheese in the fridge to greet us. We would happily return again.
