It is right on the lake. The view from my window was unsurpassable.

Worst hotel ive ever been to. They cannot find my booking when inarrive and only accept cash. Very outdated room and dirty. Will never stay at this place ever again.

A nice property actually right on the shore of Lago Izabal. Room was adequate and clean with good AC. However, there are two bars right across the street behind the property playing super loud music. We booked way out here, 40 km out of our way to escape the bustle of the town in Rio Dulce. Big mistake.

Do not stay here. You will not sleep.

This is my second time in El Estor and my second time at Chalet Castillo.  Everything I said in my previous review is the same, except they moved the beer and water cooler from the deck to another area.  A little further walk to get a beer.  I've also stayed at Calle Real Hotel in El Estor.  Both are great.  This one has a view from the deck that is spectacular from the deck.  One night I was able to watch the storms roll in from across Lake.  
Once again, if you visit El Estor go visit Agua Caliente.  This is a beautiful place.  The restaurant next door to Chalet Castillo is very good.  I've also eaten at the restaurant in Calle Real, it is good as well.  
I picked "Beachfront".  Understand you are right on the water, but there is no beach as such.

A repeat visit says something

I don't understand how this hotel got such high ratings on Booking.com, how they can charge so much, or how they manage to maintain business. We made last minute changes to our plans and needed to find a hotel near Rio Dulce the night before (which, of course, was impossible), so we decided on this place in El Astor which we were told by the hotel was a short drive to Rio Dulce. First off, that was a lie (it's 1.5 hours with little traffic). Now in the daylight I'm sure the hotel looks much nicer: it has a lovely view of Lago de Izabal and a nice hammock area overlooking it. However, we arrived just after sunset with our lovely Guatemalan driver (Eric) who stayed with us throughout the duration of our trip. And while most hotels in Guatemala have high security, this place was honestly a little terrifying. They wouldn't open the gates for us until we all stepped out of the car and someone came and inspected it. When they did finally open the gates it looked almost post-apocalyptic. The hotel was barely lit and empty apart from two or three other guests, and when we saw the concerned look on Eric's face we knew something was off. The rooms were all just identical cubicles stuffed with however many dusty beds you requested, and equipped with a dirty bathroom and rusty industrial shower hose (not in a cute hipster way). Upon uncovering one of the beds there were unidentifiable black specs covering the bed sheet: needless to say that bed went unused. As for dinner, the one restaurant in town closed just before sunset, but the receptionist informed us we could order dinner at the hotel. The cherry on top of it all was when Eric (a normally-unconcerned local) later told me his mate said not to leave the hotel at night as the area is very dodgy, which was honestly shocking to hear from him as he hadn't had any safety concerns until this point. Unsurprisingly, the dinner was very limited as the kitchen only had eggs, frijoles, and cream, so that was our meal for the evening (RIP to my vegan sister who only had refried beans for dinner). Oh also, the door locks didn't work, so we instead pushed the infested bed in front of the door before going to sleep--which did not last long as there is a nightclub conveniently located just 5 metres from the hotel, blaring tunes until sunrise. Although I must admit, the hotel has very good acoustics! We would have cancelled our stay right then if it weren't for the safety concerns of driving out of there at night, but we made sure to leave at the crack of dawn the next day.

Frightening and overpriced

I saw the other review.  Without disparaging anyone, sometimes you need to let your imagination go.  I found the town interesting, but more on that in a minute.  I stayed at this hotel two nights.  Beautiful view over the edge of Lake Isabel.  I was in town to visit a Mayan family that my wife and I help support though a non profit.  I enjoyed walking around town and seeing the local sights.  I can visit the markets, the restaurants, the stores and always find something interesting to talk with the locals about.  I enjoyed talking to Raphael the young man who ran this hotel.  But then I took the trouble to learn Spanish and want to learn the local culture.  Even learned a few phrases in Mayan.  If you go here and don't visit the hot spring about 10 miles East, shame on you.  About $15 Q to enter, then you should buy a coconut drink, and I paid Franscisco a little to walk with me back to the hot falls.  Like standing in a shower in the most beautiful shower you'll ever be in.  Seriously the water is perfect.  Take some sandals to wade in.  Not crowded at all.  I ate at the restaurnat next door to the hotel twice.  I was suspect of their Chinese food, but what I ate was perfect.  And there is a fridge with cold beer on the deck, can't beat that.  Room was clean, Raphael arranged to have some laundry done for me.  I'd stay here again in a heartbeat.  And if you get bored, there's a non profit in town that helps the local Mayans, I'm sure they could use some help.
There is a disco close by.  It didn't bother my sleep, but you can hear it in the room.

Excellent

I was GRANDPAcking in El Estor for 4 nights.
I stayed all 4 nights at the Castillo.
The price on the search engines was GTQ250 / night (US$33). From their own website, I emailed them directly to enquire about a room. They emailed back to say that they had Fan Rooms for GTQ100 and Aircon Rooms for GTQ200. I told them that I would choose a room on arrival.
Using my Smartphone GPS, I found the hotel easily.
The Aircon Room came with 2 Double Beds and Cable TV. Cable TV in Spanish is of no use to me.
I chose the Fan Room which had windows opening out onto the lake and a nice incoming breeze. My room had a nice view of the lake.
The common upstairs deck had hammocks and was a pleasant place to while-away time during the day.
But the pool needed a good clean before anyone would want to swim in it.
To stay at the Castillo, you really need your own transport.
El Estor is not a very good place to stay .. you only want to stay here if you are in transit or using it as a base to explore the area around it.
