We were so lucky to land a 3-night stay at Castara at short notice as there had been a last minute cancellation.  We could not have been happier during our stay with the beautiful views of the ocean from our room, delicious locally-sourced food from the restaurant, the helpfulness of the staff, the wonderful sense of being surrounded by birds and nature, the sound of the waves at night and the peace and privacy of our own tastefully-furnished self-catered 1-bed lodge. We were in Lime Tree at the top of quite a few steep steps - an energetic uphill walk from the village! All of the property is accessed by steps as it is set on a steep hillside - it is quite a feat of engineering.  After 6 weeks of living on a boat it felt like paradise. 
As other reviewers have mentioned (and the management have responded to with very reasonable and pragmatic comments) the bathroom, kitchen cabinetry, blinds, outdoor furniture could do with a bit of TLC but we understand that life in the Caribbean does not always make these tasks easy to keep on top of. The village of Castara is a 5-minute walk down the hill and there are a number of mostly small local restaurants, bars and small shops. Fresh bread and pastries are available on Thursday and Saturday. It is a safe and friendly village.  Trips around the north end of the island will be rewarded with a chance to see the beautiful beaches, lush green interiors and we enjoyed a very interesting morning with Newton George, Tobago's bird expert. The sea rolling onto the beach was rough during our stay but there is a life guard on duty.  If you would like to experience peace and tranquility, prefer simple pleasures and local charm to a swanky resort hotel and want to experience a slice of true Tobago then Castara is the place for you.

Simple Pleasures and Local Charm

We stayed as a couple at Castara in Dec 2023 for a week.  Everything went smoothly starting with the lovely Sue and team’s assistance from the UK.  Jeanell, Shaqueel, Porridge, Milk, and everyone else at Castara could not have been more helpful and friendly.  

The accommodation - Lime Tree - was perfect.  The location above Castara Bay just beautiful.  We bird watched with Newton George (superb), went horseback swimming at Healing for Horses (inspirational), visited Englishman’s Bay, Buccoo, Pigeon Point, Nylon Pool, Corbin Wildlife, etc.  

Judha and Leah provide excellent yoga sessions and their massages were fabulous. 

I can do nothing but rave about this holiday.   Nothing negative to say.  Except possibly that for us 7 days wasn’t long enough … next time!  

If you want lots of chill time but also lots to do, this is for you.  If you want a relaxing holiday in a safe, beautiful, eco-sensitive environment with beautiful beaches and unspoilt rainforest - and have had enough of high rise poolside so called “luxury” - this is for you.  Best holiday ever.

Fabulous holiday in every respect

Absolute paradise. Truly unbelievable place! Everything here is perfect, from the views to the food to the service. The local area is wonderful, just a few mins walk to the most beautiful and extremely peaceful beach. We couldn’t believe how relaxing this place was. Great restaurants and cafes within walking distance too. Can’t wait to return!

Our stay in Castara Retreats was wonderful in every way: beautifull landscape, cozy accommodation with the opportunity to prepare our own breakfast, friendly care and excellent food. We felt very comfortable and in good hands.
Special highlights were the excursion with Newton George to little Tobago and the yoga lessons with Juda.
We will be happy to recommend Castara Retreats to our friends.

most beautiful place to stay on Tobago

Just the perfect holiday - breathtaking location, unspoilt beach, comfy beds, well stocked kitchen and help on hand whenever it was needed. Thank you soooo much to the castara retreats team, we had the christmas of dreams!

A wonderful beach side (across a road) property with amazing views, an excellent restaurant, and very helpful staff.Beach was lovely, uncrowded and a real laid back friendly Tobago spot!Would definitely recommend and stay again if we are in Tobago.Many thanks!

Best of the best in Castara

We loved our stay at Castara Retreats. Our room was clean, comfortable and the kitchen was well-equipped. The main living area was open to the elements and our room (Shady Mango) had a lovely view of the bay - which made it a great place to enjoy a rum cocktail while watching the sunset. The beach is only a couple of minutes' walk away and is remarkably relaxed and quiet for a beautiful bay with golden sand and turquoise water. You won't be hassled by hawkers but if you're lucky, you might get a chance to help the local fishermen pull in the fishing nets (it's hard work but great fun). We enjoyed eating at the Caribbean Kitchen as well as various local cafes and restaurants - especially D'Almond (at the other end of the beach) and Saturday night at Cheno's (BBQ and steel drums). If you're looking for all-inclusive luxury, this isn't the place for you. But if you want a relaxing, independent style of holiday in a place that is integrated with the local community, you will love it. We hope to return one day!

Great location, relaxed vibe

Main holiday was in Trinidad but went to Tobago for 2 days. Stopped at Castara, the team in the UK was very helpful and quick to reply (I booked a day before going) during high season. Retreat was just beautiful, amazing views. Very clean and felt unique. Friendly staff. Would definitely recommend. 

Lovely hotel

An excellent place in terms of helpful staff, comfy accommodations, delicious food, and nature. Easy walking access to the beach, town, waterfall. Staff can arrange rides, trips, and many other things. There is yoga and massage available. Did I say how delicious the food is? I would go again.
