Cuenca

We had the most amazing time in Cuenca at this B&B. Sonia is the best host. She was so helpful with hints and recommandations for our stay. The hotel itself is breathtaking, it gives the impression to enter an oasis in the city. It is luminous, smells amazing (yes you read right) and the decor is extremely well though and classy, lots of antiquities, and warm. The cleanliness is impeccable and this was the only hotel during our 2 weeks trip that would clean our room and provide us with fresh towels everyday. Sonia is an elegant and adorable woman who makes us delicious and healthy breakfasts. We would come back FOR SURE and if there is availability, don't look further and choose this amazing B&B, you won't be disapointed.

Warm and classy experience at this fabulous B&B

We visit Cuenca a few times every year and this has become our go to hotel in El Centro. Cuenca has many little boutique hotels with historic architecture and personal service. 

Casa Montalvo is just a cut above the rest. Sonia‘s personal service is warm and welcoming and, even though this hotel is right in the heart of downtown, it is amazingly peaceful. And, the thing that really sets it apart is the little garden out back where you can sit and enjoy coffee or tea, read a book, or just contemplate life.

A cut above

Casa Montalvo is a beautiful B&B, where you feel right at home.  Sonia, the host, is a wonderful lady with exquisite taste.  The home is a renovated colonial home.  Each room is decorated with perfectly-preserved-antique furniture of the highest quality.  The house is a retreat as well as a mini museum.  It is difficult not to admire every piece of furniture and decor perfectly curated around the house.  The rooms are comfortable and different parts of the home can be enjoyed by guests like the traditional colonial backyard and garden in the back of the house, which houses multiple flowers and fruit trees.  
The location of this B&B is very central and allows you to explore the city of Cuenca  by foot or by requesting a taxi.  
Sonia offers a natural and delicious breakfast to jumpstart your day.  
When in Cuenca, we will certainly stay in this hotel again.  It was simply wonderful!!

Hidden Treasure in Cuenca

Sonia provided a beautiful place to call home for 4 nights during our time in Cuenca. Her B&B is stunning ( built in the 1800's). It is a colorful place with lots of antiques to look at but at the same time seems very up to date. The breakfasts were very tasty with fresh fruits, yummy pastries/breads and eggs. She has lots of information available . Her English is limited but Google translate and my wife who spoke some Spanish but Google translate worked just fine-don't let this deter you from staying here . It is blocks away from the main square and there is an amazing Italian restaurant called Manjare 2 blocks away. If available ask for the front room it is a little more expensive but worth it.

A wonderful place to stay in the heart of Cuenca

I stayed here for a couple of days. The room was small, but cosy and clean. Sonia is an exellent host - prepares simple but very nice breakfast and is very helpful with advice. The location is just fine, everything is within walking distance.
If you're looking for a clean and cosy place to stay then I'd definitely recommend this place. I very much enjoyed it and would gladly return here if ever visiting Cuenca again.

Wonderful stay, to be recommended

The building is undistinguished outside, but made homey inside with a fountain, huge plants, and older furniture. Rooms vary from a few large suites to mostly smaller units with windows that open only to the narrow courtyard passageway. The garden out back is an oasis. 

The lovely owner prepares breakfast and is generous with tips, though she can be overwhelmed if things get busy. 

Nice host

I stay here at least once a year and it's about a second home. Although very centrally situated and a very good choice of coffee bars, restaurants and the like in very short walking distance, as well as in the historic centre, it's also very quiet. Beautifully decorated, patio, a handful of rooms (no unpersonal hotel ambiance) and a nice terrace looking out at a garden. Can not recommend this place enough.

Favorite place in all Ecuador

We had a lovely 3 night stay with Sonia.  We had one of the larger rooms with the patio right off the room.  We were traveling with friends & it was nice to be able to gather on the patio.  They were in a smaller room but happy.  The location is only a 5 minute walk from the main square & close to a number of restaurants.  Breakfast is served with plenty of coffee.  It is a little cool inside so you should be prepared with a robe or warm pajamas.  The price is great.

A real gem

The Casa is so well-appointed, chic, cozy, and lovely, I didn't want to leave. It's also in a great location, very close to the modern art museum in Cuenca (worth checking out for sure.) We arrived to Cuenca unexpectedly quite late our first night, and called ahead to speak to Sonia; she waited out front for us, staying later than I'm sure is her usual, to ensure we got in alright. Although there was a language barrier between us, she worked very hard to get us everything we needed -- an extra alpaca blanket for unusually cold Cuenca nights (if it's cold out, the Casa is going to be cold), delicious breakfasts, an explanation with a map of walking to the airport. She's just wonderful. The smallest rooms are quite cozy but fine for two, and we were very pleased by the super-hot showers and custom Casa shower gels and soaps. Do expect that during the day, the cleaning service will *really* clean -- our stuff was arranged and organized on the desk while we were gone, etc. (if that kind of thing bothers you, know this). Beds are super comfortable, and common lounge spaces are idyllic (the back patio/garden is splendid). There is always filtered water available in the kitchen. I'd love to go back and stay at the Casa again.

Lovely all around

What a lovely place to stay. As mentioned in other reviews,Sonia, the proprietor is absolutely charming and accommodating.  The location is perfect for exploring the city and just a 10-15 minute taxi drive to the airport. There are many restaurants in close walking distance and a lavanderia just around the corner if you need a bit of laundry done.  Although the rooms are not large, the patio and front sitting room are very nice for a bit of rest and email checking. We would love to stay again.
