My sister and grown daughter came to Vieques for my son's wedding. Casa de Kathy was only three blocks from the wedding venue, and two blocks from the ocean boardwalk with shops and restaurants. The cottage we stayed in was cool, clean and stocked with all the starter supplies you would need. The linens were good quality and the beds were comfy. Kathy was on top of our arrival and departure times with tips of how to navigate how and where we had to go.

Casa de Kathy, great place to stay for a family wedding, cool clean and quiet!

My friend and I stayed at Casa de Kathy for 12 days in March.  We found the accommodation to be very comfortable and clean with everything we needed.  Kathy was a welcoming host and a wealth of information.  The location could not be better.  It was a quiet street but an easy walk to the grocery store, to town and most importantly to us, to beaches in both directions.  We walked to Coco beach and Playa Negra in one direction and to Playa Esperanza, Sun Bay and beyond in the other direction.  It was easy to hire a taxi to Playa Caracas (round trip $45 for the two of us, dropping us off at 1:00 and picking us up at 5:00) so we did not need to rent a car which was quite a relief as they are expensive and would have been stressful to drive on the narrow roads, especially at night.  The taxi driver would have taken us to Chiva for $70 round trip if we had asked her .  The view from Kathy's deck is fabulous and she was happy to have us up there.  The sitting area outside our apartment was very convenient, quiet, comfortable and shaded.  If I return to Vieques I would absolutely stay there again.

Cozy, central rooms  with beautiful panoramic views from breakfast porch. Kathy is an insightful & generous host. Malecon ( seaside promenade) , some beaches and many restaurants in easy walking distance. Kathy can answer questions about bike and kayak rental, other activities and even island politics.

Kathy is an amazing super host. She is like an old friend meeting you on your vacation right in time 
to help you out with everything. She greeted us us upon arrival, helped with taxi services, offered 
do's and don'ts ( rather very passionately ). Apart from a super host, she is part of the island's 
socio-political existence by being the founding member of the movement that created present day island.
 Her apartment is very well furnished, good lighting and a/c. Her guide book notes is a class by itself.
 Kitchen felt very homely. She checked our well being so many times , almost like a caring relative.
 At least we felt that way. Highly recommend this place and you will be happy to know a person like Kathy.

Best home away from home

This was my second trip to Vieques and it was a mix of business and family vacation.  While I was out working, my family had the chance to enjoy the island and take in all of Kathy's advice on beaches and activities on the island.  You do not need a travel agency when you stay at Kathy's because she will tell you who to call to make you trip from the airport to the Ceiba ferry, who you should take a BioBay tour with, who to call for a taxi to take you to Vieques' amazing beaches, and advice on anything else you want to do.   Everyone knows Kathy, and so when you make reservations for the BioBay or call a taxi, all you have to say is Casa de Kathy and they know exactly where you are staying.  Kathy has also helped me out with making connections for my research and work on the island, she is just so knowledgeable.  

Casa de Kathy is in a great location in Esperanza.  It is walking distance to great beaches and the Malecon.  The rooms are very comfortable, have excellent wifi (my son even took an online final exam while we were there), and the kitchen is very clean.   The larger two bed room apartment kitchen has all the space, pots and dishes to easily make a dinner for five.   

I will be back to Vieques for work again, and Casa de Kathy will always be my first choice when I need a place to stay here.

The apartment was very comfortable and clean. Close to the Malecon   with a lot  places to eat.  And a nice beach.  It is close to Sun Bay beach and a of lot beaches as well.  You must rent a car 
Kathy is lovely lady that give you a lot tips so you can enjoy your stay.( where the best places to eat, beaches, and must see around.
WE plan to go back to Vieques and for sure we'll stay  at Casa de Kathy again.

A stay at Casa de Kathy is like visiting your auntie. Expect a homey, lived-in feel, and appreciate a space that is well provisioned for an island getaway. You’ll also benefit from having a friendly host who is a font of local knowledge.

The 2-bedroom apartment is clean, furnished with basic supplies and comfortable beds. Kathy loaned us beach chairs and snorkeling equipment, which was a lovely bonus that made perfect beach days possible. The two air conditioning units quickly cooled the space, or, just relax, drink a Medalla (or three) and adapt to the warm island air.

What was offered was met and then some...great place to get to know Vieques, its barrios and its people...nice súper comfortable facilities, well taken care of by its host...K thanks again for the stay

Our Likes:  Price, convenient, and a safe location in the town (Barrio) of Esperanza on south side of Vieques Island, nearby touristy restaurants, and nearby south facing beaches.  Our Studio Apartment’s amenities included a large shower, plenty of shelves and hooks, great chest of drawers, and a refrig/freezer filled with ice.  Kathy is a long-time and active resident who is a wealth of information, who keeps in touch with you (she lives on the top floor), and who can probably quickly access health and safety responses.  Our friends, who introduced us to her place on this vacation, have been staying with her almost annually for over a decade, and they rented her bigger Two Bedroom Apartment with full kitchen and a sitting area.

My wife, Elsie adds, “Kathy did a great job decorating her studio apartment with island colors.  She knows a lot about the Island and is a wealth of information.  Kathy’s place is ideally located on the Island and is a fair price.  The air condition unit was top of the line and the two ceiling fans in the studio helped keep the place cool too.  Her thoughtfulness of providing us with the little things to help make our stay enjoyable was much appreciated, such as, board games, game cards, DVD movies, Vieques history books and magazines, a Brita filtering water pitcher (which we used several times a day) kept in the refrigerator, snorkeling gear, beach chairs, beach towels, wifi, and the use of her upstairs balcony for a great view of the ocean.  Kathy’s excellent customer service is hospitable and commendable.  Her occasional visits to see if we needed anything or had any questions was much appreciated and showed that she genuinely cared.  We will always remember our wonderful adventure on Vieques.  Thank you, Kathy!”  

As for vacationing on Vieques, you can expect near vacant beaches and plenty of sun.  It does rain occasionally for short periods and the nights can be slightly cool.  We liked Sun Bay Beach, Grand Beach, and the Black Sand Beach; and, all beaches are special and mostly deserted.  Best restaurants for us:  Coqui Fire Café, Mango Public House, Duffy’s Esperanza, and Cositas Ricas, a kabob food truck just east of Esperanza on route 997—located on the northside of the route and with permanently installed multicolored outdoor “picnic” tables and benches.

Elsie wrote, “We enjoyed both the commuter plane and Ferry rides between mainland Puerto Rico and Vieques Island, which were quite an experience and worth the trips!  The leisurely Ferry ride on a calm sea was relaxing.  On Vieques, touring the beautiful beaches, eating meals at different restaurants, visiting historical monuments and places, admiring gorgeous horses, and soaking up some warm sun were great activities. 
 
Do drive slow enough to navigate narrow roads, curves, obstructions, horses, and potholes, tho’ Federal government roads tend to be less bumpy but nevertheless narrow.  You can rent a narrow car, like one of the many Kia Souls, which suited our four-person group needs for people and stuff, proved reliable, and took what the roads dealt us astonishingly well, albeit slowly.   Rental cars, golf carts, and scooters are available.

This was my third visit to Casa de Kathy and in only gets better!  The apartment is comfortable and clean, the location is terrific with easy access to restaurants, beaches and the BioBay and the view from the patio is amazing, mountains and sea.  Kathy is a wonderful host, providing information, basic starting food and everything you need for the beach.  I plan on returning next year to get my winter sunshine!
