We visited this lovely eco-park to learn more about cocoa. We're a family living in Switzerland and we wanted to show our kids (ages 10 and 7) the origin of cocoa and how it grows only in tropical regions. They love chocolate but know only the end product and not much about the cocoa plant. So we headed here following the "Ruta del Cacao". This visit was far beyond our expectations. We saw almost the entire farm, guided by Mr. Martinez, who is the owner of the farm and an expert on cocoa and artisanal chocolate-making. We saw all types of trees, not only cocoa but also native hardwood trees and fruit trees like cashew, guava and the pepper plant. He also showed us the entire process of making artisanal chocolate. The kids could grind cocoa beans in a traditional stone, just like the Mayas did! After this very interesting and informative session, we could all taste the chocolate. After the tour we all took a swim in the pools-- these are not your "normal" pools, but natural pools (or ponds) of fresh mountain water, surrounded by tropical vegetation. It was fascinating! We could also try local dishes prepared in the Café and buy the chocolate made by Mr. Martinez. Finally, a bit of adventure... there's the possibility of doing a canopy tour. You fly over the ponds, it was a lot of fun! I highly recommend this place. The access is through about 5 km of "off road", or dirt-road as it's known in Honduras. Don't be discouraged, the road is still OK for almost all types of vehicles. It's worth it-- you'll arrive in a beautiful place in the middle of the most lush, amazing, tropical vegetation!

Great visit, loved the cocoa trail

On Friday, June 30, we went for a chocolate course from 8:00AM to 4:00P.M. They showed us the cocoa plants, the variety of seeds, the procedure of preparing the best cocoa seeds in the world and transforming them into chocolate. Every detail was explained with detail and enthusiasm. Our first "choco break" was splendid, served with so much love and attention. We sat under the trees, with refreshing air and received cocoa shell iced tea, in a word: delicious. Followed by the tea came a very warm sandwich in fluffy bread and plenty of nutrition inside. The lunch was huge, also homemade. The second "choco break" consisted of home made hot chocolate like it's typically prepared in Honduras and sweet bread. We had a blast making our own chocolate bars from finish to start, with the best cocoa in the world: Honduran cocoa.

Nos llevaron desde el vivero con plantas ganadoras en Francia por ser el mejor cacao de calidad. Luego nos mostraron todo el proceso de la semilla desde su fermentación, seleccionarla, tostarla, pelarla, molerla, preparar la pasta y hacer las barras. Durante el transcurso del día nos sirvieron dos "choco breaks" (el matutino con té de cáscara de coca y emparedado tibio riquísimo y el vespertino de chocolate caliente con canela, leche, pimienta gorda y azúcar tomado en guacal y pan dulce) y el almuerzo que fue enorme. La atención de primera. Salí feliz de allí, me consintieron tanto.

The place where they pamper you the most.

I was very lucky to stay at this family-run ecotoursim park for 10 days. Normally, El Ocote is only day use. It is busiest on the weekends with many locals from Villanueva and San Pedro Sula. However, there are two cabins that can be rented if you talk to management. My co-worker and I felt very safe and welcomed in this place of natural beauty. Things to do: swim in the refreshing pool on a 90+ degree day, hike/drive through El Ocote's jungle roads, ziplining, soccer, or just relax on the front porch of your cabin and watch the donkeys roam. We were lucky enough to meet the entire family and even celebrate a birthday! We paid a very fair price for daily, home-cooked Honduran meals. I've traveled around Central America a bit and this was easily the most delicious food I've had. Even if you've only got a day or two, El Ocote is definitely worth checking out, especially since it's only about a 40 minute drive from San Pedro Sula.

Get out of San Pedro Sula, enjoy nature, and meet a great family!

I stayed in one of the two El Ocote cabins for 13 days while in Honduras for work, and it couldn't have been better.  The place itself, hospitality, location, security, and accommodations were way beyond what I have grown to expect in rural Honduras.  If you desire, Vilma, the grandmother of this family owned and operated park, can provide three meals a day, which are usually eaten with the family at abuela's table.  After only a couple meals we were treated as one of the family and wound up spending quite a bit of time with Felipe (the owner), his wife and kids, and other family members who help run the park and zipline.  Abuela cooks real, simple, delicious Honduran food that is made specifically to be safe for gringos like myself.  The avocados are unlimited, the pools are fed by running spring water, the family is wonderful, the grounds are well-maintained, and the cabins are spacious and plush.  They even have a full kitchen if you choose to prepare your own food.
