The bed and breakfast is located in a very ‘safe’ location for those who want to escape Addis Ababa while in Addis Abeba(!). It would most likely fit the need for travelers with children. It has clean yet rather soulless rooms with old furnitures - which have outlived their charm and have not probably been changed because greed appears to be the spirit of the house. They will make sure they take every penny they can from you without not wanting to realize they will need more than just a ‘good’ location for the price they ask. New comers to Addis Ababa of course might take the cunning smile for genuine or fail to question why would a 5 min ride from the airport costs the price they ask for - but make no mistake - they won’t hesitate to charge you a full price for a night you have not stayed, should a human error or a misunderstanding occur. If you are accustomed to the kindness and hospitality other places in the city offer; come here for contrast, if you intend to see the heartwarming human interactions elsewhere cunningly faked for a dollar.

The epitome of greed.

The secluded location - think gated community - is a matter of taste. Personally I found it boring to be so tucked away from the lively streets of Addis - I almost felt like being back in Europe. Our room had no view and was quite pricey for its standard (shared bath). The staff was friendly.

We had booked two nights on Booking.com but only wanted to stay one. While the wife first gave us the impression that this was ok, the husband demanded money for the second night too because of the commission that Booking.com takes. We offered to pay that commission, but to no avail. He referred to the terms and conditions that stated that cancellations must be done 5 days before and asked if we wanted to see the terms in writing. We didn’t. We found his attitude to be greedy, disheartening and unexpected in this otherwise so flexible and friendly country. The house was half empty, so it wasn’t as if they lost any bookings because of us. We paid up and moved to a place with a better atmosphere. We lost the money for the second, unused night, but Biruk lost us and our friends and acquintances as potential future guests.

Secluded for better or worse

Hmmm…where do I start? I’ve never stayed at a bed and breakfast before so after reading the reviews for this place I was very intrigued. I booked it and communicating with them was a breeze. Mebrati & Etetu, the owners were very accommodating. I actually enjoyed just conversating with them.

Location: It’s very close to the airport and just a few mins walk away from all that is happening in Bole. If you are flying in, arrange a ride with them as its the easiest. 

I broke my trip up into 2 stays (2 days and then 3 days) while here in Ethiopia as I went off to Lalibela and then visited Debre Zeit and they allowed me to store my luggage with them while I was gone.

Room: The rooms are very clean and the beds are very comfortable. I had no issues sleeping at all. They provide you with shoes to walk around in and fresh towels every day. The staff goes above and beyond to keep this place immaculate.

Staff: There were two to three women working at all times and although they spoke a bit of English, I had no problems communicating with them. They chose their staff wisely.

Grounds: The Garden is peaceful, when the sun is shinning, there is no other place to be. 

Main room: This is where you eat and just kind of chill and unwind. Spent a lot of time here as the other guests and Mebrati & Etetu were always tuned into the futbol games during the World Cup.

Food: You can either go out to eat or stay in. If you want to eat dinner or lunch here, as breakfast is provided, then just give them a few hours heads up so that they may prepare it. The food was always delicious and home made. 

Laundry: If you plan to be on the road for a bit or have been, they do a great job with your laundry. Give it to them in the morning and then by evening, at the latest, they will have it done. I’ve had laundry done in the places and they did a good job.

Overall, if you are coming to Addis, I would definitely recommenced staying here. I asked a lot of the other guest how they found out about it and most said through friends who have stayed previously or stumbled upon it online. Its safe and secure. I left my belongings around as if I was at home. I honestly never even locked my door…thats how secure it is. There were people from all over the world here. Lots of Americans & Europeans and they all heard about it from friends.

Best Bed & Breakfast in Addis Ababa...the reviews are all true!

The warm welcome by the owner couple and welcome tea at the arrival in the early evening was very pleasing. The location is in the very safe Bole Sub City residential area about 5-10 minutes by taxi from the Bole international airport, with restaurants and shopping options in the vicinity. This b&b is a successful transformation of a former family residence with an annex building. It is spacious, very clean and offers single and double rooms with self-contained (ensuite) bathrooms but as well single rooms with shared sanitation facilities. The place is child friendly and it contains a small garden, terrace and carpark. It has a kitchen facility, common room with TV, and they offer several services such as free WiFi, airport pick up, laundry services (chargeable). The room charges are very reasonable in comparison with the overall Addis-market, a real gem in the wider area.

Safe, charming and child friendly

Biruk B&B was all we were looking for in Addis. Perfectly located, close to the airport and in the heart of modern Addis. Additionally it truly feels like a safe haven in the middle of Addis. This is due to the fact that is privately owned by amazingly friendly people that do everything to make your stay as comfortable as possible. Also the rooms, shower and breakfast are everything we hoped for.
