We visited after the resort had been closed due to Covid for over a year and a half.  They were still in the process of fixing things and restarting activities.   Not everything was perfect, but after having no guests for so long due to unfortunate circumstances, I felt they were doing a good job.  🙂  The staff was friendly and helpful.  (Helpful hint. . hive your tips directly to the staff instead of just putting it on your receipt..  that way they will actually recieve it.)  

The guards at the entrance checked our temperature and asked if we were vaccinated.   Be prepared to drop off all your luggage at the lobby.. They will drive it to your cabin as you are not allowed to drive to the cabins yourself.  Then you park in the designated spots near the entrance.  

The two cabins we were in overlooked the river.  They were clean and the pillows smelled wonderful. The showers were nice and hot,and the air conditioners worked well. Although a bit of maintenance is needed, we are sure they will get to it as guests start coming back.  A minor thing I would change is the lighting in the main rooms. The balconies are the prize feature of each cabin.  The sounds of different birds and the howler monkeys is true gift.  Sitting outside and quietly viewing the river..  . priceless!   

The Kiskadee restaurant was a pleasant surprise.   The food that was available from the menu was very good.  I did not have the buffet, however friends we met up with at the resort said the food was good.  
The continental breakfast was included in the price of the room.  It was adequate. A variety of flavors for different cultures.   But the croissants were exceptionally rich.  The only coffee offered at the time was instant.   We  solved that by bringing our own coffee and filters. . There are coffee makers in each room along with a small refrigerator.   To stay safe and eco friendly  bring your own. ice cube tray, water bottles, and water.   

We booked our kayak trip and our boat trip with our guide Kaatje. He was an exceptional knowledgeable guide.  We learned about the river, the animals protected being on land protected by Berg en. Dahl.  We also were able to see a couple villages of Maroon tribes, and learn how they make a living for themselves.   

The pool had just reopened the week before we arrived.  We enjoyed  the view of the river from the infinity pool..  As they rehire more staff we are sure that the pool area will be cleaned up from the construction, and will be better maintained daily. In the meantime we were happy that the showers were operating and the pool was open.  No changing rooms or toilets were open.

Next time we come, we hope the zip lines are open.  We understood that before Covid it was one of the best places to zipline in South America!   We could see the towers and the line that went over the river! 

This resort is so beautiful and is truly a place of peace, quiet, and relaxation. Swim in the pool, sit on your deck, eat at the beautiful outdoor restaurant.  Get some exercise by going for a walk on the trails, swimming, or kayaking.   We hope as they continue renovation they keep in mind why people come and do not try to make it into a noisy place with a raucous nightlife.   The true treasure they have here is the animals and trees and river in the Amazon Rainforest.

We had such a lovely stay here what an amazing place.The location was great so quiet and relaxing the stuff very friendly and helpful.Everything was clean and our bed very comfortable.We will definitely be back again.

I am back for my 40th bday at this resort.the employees of this resort very friendly. We enjoyed the pool ,and waw diner delish.surrounded by trees and the sound of birds chirping very peaceful. We are very blessed from a 1 night stay ,became a 2 night (gift from a family we know )

It is so wonderfully relaxing and tranquil at the resort. The pool is very nice and they make it very easy to participate in activities. The food was really tasty and the bed was A-MAY-ZING. My little lodge was so adorable! I loved it! Word to the wise - the shuttle to the resort from Paramaribo leaves from Hotel Krasnopolsky at 10:30 am and arrives around 12:30 at the resort. The shuttle home (assuming you're spending the night) leaves between 12:30 and 13:00. Great cultural events at  night - a local choir came the night I was there! The buffet was a bit expensive for what you get (the food is really good! just not a lot of options) -- US$17 for the lunch buffet and US$23 for the dinner, and they've got you because there's nowhere else to go for food!

Tranquil and Lovely, but Expensive Food!

We recently stayed in a hut with river views. We were made to feel very welcome by the receptionist; each given a scarf to show “how important guests are” - sadly this was the only time we felt valued by staff. We didn’t get a guided tour of the resort, we had to wait until the offical check in time, despite the place being virtually empty (only 3 groups on the Friday). The huts are nice with 2 double beds and a lounge area and bathroom. Considering the price of accomodation, one would expect a few bars of soap, bottles of shampoo, conditioner and body lotion in the bathroom (only a soap dispenser in the shower). Our package included all meals from a buffet - definitely would NOT recommend this. There was a selection of non meat food, but it was all of very poor quality - especially as this resort is marketed at the “Number 1” in Surinam. The deserts were non existent - the first night a large chunk of water melon (plenty of mangos rotting on the ground at the adventure centre) and none on the 2nd night. When I asked for desert, the staff told me “it hadn’t been delivered”! Maybe the chef could have made something instead? Or they could have offered guests an ice cream from the freezer?
Activities were supposedly advertised on the white board outside reception - nothing was written on it during our stay, despite me popping into reception to enquire which activities were available. When I sought information from 1 receptionist, it was clear that I was disrupting her reading texts on her phone. This is an Eco resort and we saw a few wild animals in the grounds. We asked staff what they were, but no one was interested / willing to help. Maybe the resort could get a poster of wild animals found in Surinam from WWF and put it on the wall? 
The one stand out amongst the staff was the man who took us on the historical walk around the former plantation. He had made a small museum from items he’d found in the area and was very passionate about the history of the area.  Such a shame that the other staff don’t share his enthusiasm and willingness to interact with the guests.
This resort does not offer value for money and I would not return at current prices and low standards of food and customer service.

Peaceful, scenic location, shame about the food and the staff

We stayed one night at this resort and we delighted we got one of the larger cottages along the river. 
The double room cottage with a lay out of the large hotel suite was very comfortable 
The veranda overlooking the Surtinam river was a nice afternoon resting spot.
The large open air bar and restaurant were good places for drinks.
The meal service at the restaurant was below the standards one might expect at a large luxurious resort as BergenDal.

Nice resort!

I’ve been here seven years ago and I went back, just two weeks ago. Some minor things have changed: the furniture of the lodges (C-lodges on the hill) could use some paint, and mine had a balcony that felt a little dangerous when using it with more than one person.
The public pool is now used as a graveyard for dead leaves I suppose, because nobody cared to clean the ones on the bottom. Furthermore many of the small blue tiles on the sides have disappeared and have not been replaced whatsoever.
Bergendal Resort is still classy, with it’s unique location and it’s helpful and welcoming staff. Unfortunately some work has to be done to fit the price they ask again.

Bad value, still nice

Happiness comes from within and once we booked and paid the prices we did not look back and just enjoyed ourselves. We had A lodges at the side of the rive and loved the lay-out. Sixty square meters of lodge and warm water. Great not to have TV and Wi-Fi only at the reception. We loved the food and the trips and the staff was fantastic. Georgio is Mr. Surinam in hospitality aside from being a great bartender but we found all the staff very kind. Where does one find a beer and rum coke at $1,50?
We got totally rained out soaking wet one night on a riverboat tour and even enjoyed that. Great place to unwind and bound with family.

We just had fun

The location of the hotel is very nice in the forest next to the Suriname river with activities in the surounding for a steep price for Suriname. My Expedia reservation was not registered at the front desk and after 30 minutes wait time they resolved this. The rooms are nice with a great view, but the bed is too soft and the towels for after showering are small towels that does not absorb water. All in all I would recommend this hotel, but some improvements could improve the experience greatly.

Location is nice but some improvements needed

Beautiful place - 5 stars for setting and ambience. Lodge (hut) was comfortable with a lovely setting - view of the Suriname River and below a tree with 3 Toucans - fantastic.We enjoyed a canopy zip lining activity which was expertly run by the adventure centre. Lovely infinity pool. Unfortunately these positives were let down by a bureaucratic place and very disappointing food - either grossly overpriced dull looking buffets or a small al a carte menu with no vegetarian alternatives (as a vegetarian it was necessary to have toasted cheese sandwiches). Again the positives - the natural beauty, lovely pool, nice hut and we'll run activity outweigh the negatives but if improved this could be a 5 star centre.
