Bennett House Bed & Breakfast

We loved our stary at Bennett House. After a warm and friendly welcome by Derek, we got settled in our spacious bedroom and spent a restful night in this charming house.  We woke up to a delicious breakfast.

Location: Right on Main Street, easy to find, an easy walk to downtown and the riverfront walking paths. Lots of attractive Victorian homes in the neighborhood
Our host, Derek, was pleasant and capable. The room and the premises generally (a smallish Victorian-age house just a few blocks from downtown Woodstock and the waterfront) were absolutely spotlessly clean. The downstairs common areas are nicely restored to a plausibly authentic Victorian-era appearance. Don't miss the huge floor-to-ceiling china cabinet with leaded glass doors! Our room upstairs was spacious and well furnished, both with knickknacks and with things a traveler might actually need, like hair drier, curling iron, clothes iron & ironing board, disposable razors, bathrobes, slippers, and extra blankets & pillows. The private bathroom is, shall we say, intimate, but everything was clean and worked. Internet-based TV gave a huge array of channel choices. The room is very dim after dark, presenting a challenge if one has work to do or just wants to sit up late and read.
A light breakfast the next morning (served a little earlier than the usual 8:15 by advance arrangement to accommodate our schedule) included an attractive fresh fruit plate with a slice of lemon-blueberry pound cake followed by scrambled eggs, Canadian bacon, and toasted English muffin, all well prepared and nicely served in the breakfast room downstairs. We are not experienced B&B patrons, so we didn't know exactly what to expect, but this was a very positive experience. We have paid more for simple motel rooms and received far less for our money.

I was there two years ago - should have reviewed then. It was my first B&B experience, and we stayed two nights in Woodstock. The host was polite, the house was quiet and peaceful. It seemed to be a stop for people traveling on through to other maritime locations. 

Breakfast was very nice, certainly hit the spot, and this would be rated excellent, except for having to vacate the premises between 10am - 4pm. We biked to and from Heartland that day, then hung out around town.

Does anyone know if it's still operating, as the owner had said it was up for sale...?

Pleasant place for an overnight stay

Beautiful Old Home

During our six week holiday we stayed in 16 Bed and Breakfast properties but this place set a new low for hospitality.  After a long drive we were very tired and arrived at the property at 2.45 pm.  Because other properties had a 3.00 pm check in we just parked in the kerb and hoped they would let us in 15 minutes early.  There was no one home, so we sat on the front steps. 
At 3.00 pm Deb and Derek drove onto the property and from the look on their faces we knew we were in trouble.  When Derek opened the door we were told we were 1 hour early and had we checked our booking slip we would have noticed that fact.  We apologised and Derek let us into the property.  While showing us the guest lounge we noticed Bev staring at us from the private quarters in a way that left no doubt we were not welcome.
We were advised that breakfast was at 8.15 am and would be a fruit plate ,and if we didn't like eggs then it would be toast.  Our room was basic but comfortable.  I was staggered to read the list of rules in book form in our room and actually took a photo.  Here are just a few paraphrased:  The management will not accept liability for any injury incurred on the property, and If any item is found to be missing it will be assumed you wished to purchase it and will be charged to your credit card number.  Remember this is a private home etc etc.
But the most bizarre was the statement that if staying more than one night guests would need to vacate the property by 10.00am and book in again at 4.00 pm.  The house is in lock down during the day.
Another couple checked in and got the same 'welcome' causing us to have a mutual laugh as our rooms were on the same level.  The other guy asked if we were in a Bed and Breakfast or a Correctional Institution.  We presented promptly for breakfast at 8.10 am and both couples again saw Bev giving us the 'big freeze' stare from the private area.  This review is only a brief summary of this most unusual property.
The possible reason for this bizarre behaviour became clearer when we saw in the book of the Ten Commandments that the property and the business was for sale. We wish Bev and Derek a quick sale that will enable them to move onto the next season of their lives.

Avoid at all cost

We always stay in B&Bs. These hosts were the most unfriendly, smirky and sarcastic
when asked questions, ever met in the business.
Never have we encountered an establishment where the guests are ORDERED OUT OF THEIR ROOM, and OFF the premises for the day from 10am to 4pm when staying for longer than one night!!!
There are no snack, tea , coffee, or water laid out for the guests to access (except for trick or treat sized chips and M&Ms).
Tasty fruit cake at breakfast, or sharp / tangy eggs Benedict, or an English muffin with one slice each of luncheon ham and plastic cheese.
The hosts clearly don't enjoy their work and are not a good match with tourists... Especially international guests questions
