B&B Phileas Fogg

i loved this place, not convencional at all. It was perfect for one night., We had to take a connecting flight so we stayed for one night in brussels and we just made the perfect choice, it's in the center, close enough to the airport (taxis are very expensive in Brusells) I liked that it was decorated so personally, artistic and rustic at the same time. Karine was such a great host, it felt like arriving to a friends house. She personally makes your breakfast, natural jam and fresh orange juice. I would recommend it to anyone that doent want to stay in a unpersonalized convencional hotel.

I sometimes travel to Brussels for work and I'm quite fed up with the expensive and characterless hotel experiences. I tried this time if there's something a bit more personal, and I loved the experience. 
Sure, it is the kind of place that you might end up hating if you dislike there being a friendly dog, or that there's no reception that's open 24/7, or that the owner leaves you to your own devices in the evening (but totally making sure that you have access from minute one - the door code works just fine). 
So, imagine staying at a friend's place who happens to live in Brussels: she might have a dog too, will think it natural to eat breakfast while you do too, and has some other personal traits such as sensible preferences: e.g., that it's worth investing in a machine that makes excellent espresso while it's far less important to follow the latest renovation fashion advice on how the shower is set up. The important things for today's sensible travellers are there (no-fuss wifi), the unnecessary ones aren't. Based on this, I can imagine some people might not like it, but I did and I think many others will too.

Unusual, in a really nice way

On a last minute business trip to central Brussels, my PA found that as many of the 'overpriced hotels' were already fully booked, there was little to choose from except hotels that were many kilometres away.  So this establishment was booked, and paid for in advance.   I travelled from London to Brussels via Eurostar and made my way to the Boutique & Flathotel (sic) by Metro, arriving around midday.  The hard to find back-street location is in a down market area of town, where I suspect there's more 'action' to be found at night, and especially for the 'adult traveller', but I'll leave the reader to make whatever they want of that.  I checked in, left my luggage in the room allocated, and went off for one of my many pre-planned meetings.  I returned around 4.30pm only to find that my luggage had been removed from the room, and put in the kitchen-diner.  I asked what was going on, and was bluntly TOLD by the woman, that my room had already been reserved by another couple, and they were in their ROOM.    And to cap it SHE said there were no other rooms available.  So I was basically evicted from an establishment for having the Temerity to expect the contract (a fully paid up one at that) to be honoured.    All I can say is !!   WHAT GOES AROUND... COMES AROUND !!

AVOID like the plague, and at all costs !!

Do not stay here! This is not a bed and breakfast! Everything listed about this so called bead and breakfast is not true. I trusted the positive comments about this place here on hotels.com, but after being there myself I can't even understand why there are any positive comments about this place at all. Read also other comments on trip advisor before booking!

I stayed at Phileas fogg together with a friend, and it was nothing like we expected. For the price we paid we could’ve gotten a much better place in Brussels. When we arrived we had some troubles finding the bed and breakfast since there wasn't any sign. After a while we noticed a small sign saying Phileas fogg on the window. The door was locked so we couldn't get in, so after ringing the doorbell and knocking on the door numerous times another guest opened the door. Upon entering the building there was no reception, it looked more like entering a shabby home.The guy who opened the door for us had to call the owner since she wasn't there. She had no idea that we were arriving to the bed & breakfast, and we had to wait one hour and thirty minutes for her to come and see us. I consider this to be poor service because I expected that the owner would keep a track of who is coming and who is leaving her bed and breakfast. Luckily for us there was another guest there at the time we arrived, otherwise we wouldn't have been able to enter at all. 

The whole place is in desperate need of a renovation. The rooms are in poor quality and the kitchen looks dirty. Concerning the bathroom, the toilet is very dirty and it smells terrible. I don't think anybody has cleaned it for months! There was also nobody to refill the toilet paper when it ran out. The toilet is in a tiny room, where even I as a petite girl had troubles to fit in. The bathtub, which is also dirty, is in a separate room. Every time my friend or I had to shower we had to put plastic bags in the bathtub as not to stand directly on the dirt in the bathtub. What more is that we had to cover the window with towels to prevent that people from the outside could see inside the bathroom. We also had to put a big towel on the door since it is a glass door. There's dust and spider webs in the bathroom and you can see that the the towels that the owner provide once had a white color back in the day, but have a grayish/yellowish color now. Luckily I had my own towel with me. 

One time when we returned after a day of touristing we couldn't enter the building since we got locked out. The door is really old and it doesn't close properly, but if you close it too hard it gets stuck. We had to ask a random man on the street to help us push the door open late in the evening. The only reason that my friend and I stayed a whole week at this place is that we were traveling on a budget and we couldn't afford to pay again for changing to another hotel. Otherwise I would have left this place immediately. The owner has no clue about who's coming and going since she's almost never there. She basically lets the place run itself.The owner has also a big dog which she brings with her on the few occasions she comes to Phileas fogg, so it's not ideal for people who are allergic or scared of dogs.

BOOK ELSEWHERE!!!!!

Picked The Phileas Fogg after some considerable research. It looked good online, was in the right location and reasonably priced. I made a confirmed booking but when I arrived (after a 24 hour journey) was told that I'd been moved to another location because they'd now received a longer booking for the room! Had to tramp through the streets with luggage, to find they'd placed me in a considerably inferior property (at the same price!). If you do happen to consider The Phileas Fogg, just beware that your booking will not be honoured if they happen to get a better offer!
