Base Hostel Old San Juan

This is the most perfect hostel to suit the vibe of Old San Juan. The whole place is totally eclectic and bohemian with huge communal spaces in an old building. The amenities are very simple- dorm rooms are VERY tiny (I did see the private rooms which are huge and would opt for that next time- or the alternative treehouse accommodation), lockers in the hall, water pressure in the showers is sometimes just a drip, and the appliances in the kitchen are old-fashioned (portable burners and an old metal coffee contraption that Gladys helped me with- there is a mini fridge and microwave though as well), but none of that was why we chose the place.

The atmosphere is so awesome and everything I was looking for! It's a great place to socialize and go out to party being in the middle of Old San Juan with bars right outside the front door. Jose welcomed us like friends right off the bat (he will give you his number to contact him if you need anything), and Joe and J.R. who live and work there are both fantastic guys. A bunch of us had a great couple nights all hanging out. I absolutely felt at home and would return in a heartbeat when I get the chance to come back to Puerto Rico.

Super bohemian and cool, perfect location

Absolutely terrific stay at the Base Hostel! From the start, our host Jose and his son were so gracious and extremely helpful and the hostel caretaker Juan Carlos was great in showing us around. They introduced us to the area, gave us suggestions on what to see in the area and throughout San Juan. The hostel itself was an amazing stay with a feeling of staying in a rain forest while extremely accommodating and clean. Location is perfect if you’re looking to explore old San Juan as well as if you’re trying to venture further. I will definitely be staying here the next time I’m in Puerto Rico! 

Amazing hostel in an amazing city

Base Hostel was in an amazing location in Old San Juan for a great price! We received excellent directions on how to find and get into the hostel. We had clean towels and sheets. There is a kitchen and a fridge so if you are staying in the city for a while and want to save money by making your own food, that is an option. It is directly above a hopping bar and dance club, so if you are a light sleeper, this may hinder your sleep. But if you want to party, it is nice to have this so close. We requested a female only dorm and were put in a room with two guys, but it wasn't really a problem for us. There are 5 toilets and 5 showers. Hot water is a hit or miss.

Good Location in the Heart of Old Town

We loved our stay at BASE in 2015. We booked the tree house via airbnb. It was rustic but had everything you needed, the outdoor shower was super neat and the location was hands down amazing- right next to La Factoria the best bar in OSJ. Jose is a character and we had so much fun talking to him about his ties to Kentucky. I would suggest this for younger or more adventurous people but for the price it cannot be beat.

Tree House in the City

A different hostel, so special, you get the feeling of beeing in a rainforest! Forget all your experiences of hostels you've visited before, cause Base is very special.
There is no luxury, everything is simple, but functional!
The staff are just amazing, friendly, helpful and relaxed. Unforgettable!
There are two coded gates to get through before you enter the hostel, they also have boxes for your values, if you bring your own lockers. So it feels safe. The staff is always around, even the owners mother, a beautiful, elderly lady, is showing up daily, and are very helpful and caring. 
Dorms are comfortable, and there are some private rooms too. I wish I could stay at the Tree House some time, there is a suspension bridge leeding to it.
The location is great, close to the castle, shops, museums, churches and lots of bars and restaurants. You can hear sounds and music from the bars around at night, but in the hostel it is peaceful.
A good adventure, staying at Base!

Hilarious!

Base hostel was located in the best area of old San Juan. Super cool place great atmosphere and amazing staff. Joseph in patictuar was very helpful in finding the best spots for food and drinks. He took me to some of the coolest bars in old San Juan and the guy could not be a nicer more genuine dude. Stay here you won't regret it.
