With low expectations, this was great. Know that it has changed names several times and now is called Mara Laguna. AC was great. Pool was wonderful. Beds were OK. Glass sliding doors did not slide. Two bathrooms, but only one shower curtain. Near the Dive Bar and sea star dive center, both great. Wonderful pork tacos for breakfast near the 777 supermarket, again, near by.

We've been coming here most winters for years, even through this developments hard times!  Wow what a difference for 2017!  Arrived the end of January for 5 weeks,,,first thing I noticed was that owners of the villas were starting to take some pride, cleaning up, painting, landscaping...many of the legal disputes were at or near the end,,,by the time I left in March, a whole new HOA executive was elected and within days the work started,,,condo buildings being painted, maintenance, landscaping, and people there were getting excited!   The location of these condos and villas is perfect, quiet, beautiful views, but 5 minutes walk to town for nightlife, restaurants and shopping.  Beach is across the road, as well as grocery store, small restaurants and bars....the pool area has been completely renovated and repaired and re-opened in June!   There are still some legal issues being ironed out with the restaurant and bar onsite,,,but all in all, it's wonderful to see and feel the changes that will surely bring people back!    And by the way, see Carla across the road for tours, golf cart rentals, ferry tickets, mainland transport between the airport and ferries,  and anything else you need or want to know!

2017....out with the old, in with the new!!

Barrier Reef Resort is currently under new management and has in the past been battling  legal battles.............NO MORE !  This resort is getting a well deserved facelift
Currently improvements are being made by leaps & bounds.  Location has always  been a positive, but now there's so much more.  The pool will be back open soon, buildings are being painted, landscaping improved, and so much more to even mention.  This resort is finally moving on with a fresh start, and definitely worth looking into !

I have been renting here for 2 years, the outside looks like it has seen better days, but its safe with 24 hours security, beautiful sunrise and sunset views, less than a min walk from the beach, right across the street from a supermarket, less than a 1/4 mile away from town, boat access and parking, animal friendly, very sturdy cement buildings that can withstand heavy weather, all buildings are about 4-6 foot above sea level so cant really get flooded.  As a renter i cant complain, as a holiday maker i might, specially if told that there are "amenities".   This is a great place for people looking to rent a place while buying or building elsewhere.  Or people looking for something affordable and spacious long term.

Our timeshare, Interval International, has this place listed as Reef Village Vacation Club which it is no longer called so accurate reviews were hard to find prior to our trip. The unit itself is very nicely furnished and looks exactly as it does on photos and its location is very close to town. The "island" where the pool, bar and restaurant were once located is now abandoned and dilapidated. There is no beach, no dock, and now no pool. If you just need an inexpensive place to stay and are aware of its shortcomings then I guess it's a good spot but be aware it offers nothing on site. Carla, the property manager was great and the only other living soul you will interact with on site. Linens and towels were inadequate, stained and mismatched. Kitchen amenities not adequate to prepare meals.

However the place is a dump. Long term residents resent the tourists. If you are looking for a more traditional resort experience go somewhere else.  Also you need to rent a golf cart. Bring an umbrella.
