Banghoek Place Hostel

This is the second time that I stayed here, the last time 10 years ago.
It is clean, good mattresses and bedding, friendly staff and excellent value. You even get a free breakfast.
Stayed in a dorm room.

Price was decent. Rooms, bathroom, and bedding were clean and tidy. Breakfast wasn't special but it was free! Staff was friendly and helpful. The commons areas were not too roudy. Overall a nice stay and no complaints

Excellent Backpackers in Stellenbosch

Great Experience

My stay here was average. the beds were okay and showers were clean but small. the people were nice but I have to stay it's quite strange that there was often no one at the reception desk... so if you had a question, you would ding the bell and have to wait for a bit or just ask any other guest.

Comfy beds, small bathrooms

I had $50-$70 USD stolen from my backpack while I was talking to the receptionist. See KimberlyWilot's one star review. We suspected it was an unregistered guest that alleges he's a PhD student.

The story on this place was written up in the newspapers in the Independent if you want more details on it. I'm disappointed in Liza, who I thought at first was a wonderful host. But she did everything she could to protect the suspect. 

I know she's going through a rough patch in her life, but I hope if she reads this, that she can change her ways. It's a shame, because I really liked the staff - like Loyd and Niki. 

But it's not right to treat guests this way. It certainly isn't hospitality. 

If you're going to come here, don't leave any valuables in your room. Count your cash before you check in and every morning.

Money stolen here

Me and my friends were sleeping in a private room with only the four of us. When we went to breakfast we left our bags in the room because you except it’s safe as we locked the door. When we were with all four of us out the room people got in somehow and stole money from all of us. They took it in small amounts in the hope we probably wouldn’t notice it but we did. This happened two days in a row and over 200€ is stolen in total.
When we confronted the manager with this she really didn’t care. Saying ‘i’m sorry it wasn’t me’ isn’t a solution to this problem. She didn’t even care enough to talk to us in the evening because she was ‘unavailable’. When we talked to her in the morning she got her two cleaning ladies in front of us like we had to point fingers at the one who did it. It’s absolutely stupid and no way how you handle this. Her first response was also ‘but why do you have so much money on you’. It doesn’t matter how much money we have with us. If we get a private room we expect that no one else can go in the room. But apparently there was a roomkey missing since a couple days before we arrived and they still made the irresponsible decision to let us sleep there and expect nothing would happen. So they made that choice, they should take the fault. We got absolutely no service at all. We lost a lot of money and a manager who made us feel guilty for it.
Too bad because the hostel actually looks like a nice place, they should only learn how to treat their costumers.
