This place is well located for a stop either going to or coming from the Tunnel and we used it many times under its previous management. Back then the accommodation was very basic but the food was excellent. Unfortunately, Covid and family problems saw it close and it is now owned and run by a young couple and their extended family.

The accommodation is now far better but the food can only be described as basic.

The common rooms are now shared with the family which includes two very young and quite noisy children and their toys plus the small bar area is dominated by a French billiards table, not too sure where all the guests will sit when all five projected rooms are up and running and occupied.

Sharing common rooms with the family is a very new experience, one we have never encountered in any previous B&B or Chambre d’Hote and one we have no desire to repeat even though, on this trip, we had to so do having booked and paid for both our out and homebound nights.

Marion, the young lady running the place, is delightful and obviously trying hard but has a hell of a lot to learn about the hospitality trade if the place is going to attract returning customers. In our humble opinion, she should decide whether to run the place as a Chambre d’Hote or a family house and stick to one or the other or find some way to physically separate the two.

I’m sorry to be negative but having, in the past, run a far too busy B&B in the UK my wife and I have a lot of experience in what it takes to make one a success and too much of that is simply absent here. 

Perhaps we should offer a consultancy service to aspiring B&B owners!


In The Past: Bedrooms Very Basic - Food Excellent. Now: Bedrooms Better - Food Very Basic

We spent 2 nights here to explore the region. Very friendly welcome, especially appreciated as we were  travelling with family. Original environment, with the old mill machinery. Rooms were quiet, spacious and clean and the breakfast delicious.  We very much enjoyed the billiard table and the collection of other board games and books. Nice 12 km hiking path in the neighbouring fields.

Great weekend escape

This place is well-positioned for an overnight stop either going or coming from Calais if you can get a booking that is because it is invariably full.

My son and I discovered it a few years ago and this trip was the first time I have been able to get in again and for both legs, a real bonus.

Some of the less positive reviews do have a point on some of the complaints. No, there are no marked parking bays but if you can’t park a car without one, you should not be driving a car to start with. Yes, it can sometimes take a few minutes before you can raise someone to check you in but that’s because it is small family run business and they are all in the kitchen prepping for dinner, ring the bell, have a seat and a little patience and someone will come to greet you. Yes, there are steps to the first floor, it is an old mill building so no way a lift could be installed, anyway what do you expect, someone to carry you upstairs? In common with most hotels in France and other places too, breakfast is charged as an extra so if you don’t have it, check to make sure it has not been charged for, mistakes do happen. I could go on and on putting down the daft comments.

If you are looking for five star accommodation with a parking valet and a hot and cold running chambermaid then go somewhere else but if you are after a comfortable night’s sleep with a very good dinner and a typical French breakfast, being looked after by pleasant and friendly people in a quirky old building, then this is the place to be.

Will try to get a booking on my next foray into France.

Excellent for what it is

A lovely quiet spot just right to break a long journey or to explore the often downgraded Pas de Calais. Lovely country side. The staff were great and the food was excellent and reasonably priced. We will be back for more.

Stayed a number of times before, definitely our preferred stop-over before returning to the UK, plus it’s dog friendly!

Returning to the UK

No parking on arrival, due to there being no parking bays marked out and other guests parking inconsiderately. Checked in and asked for advise on parking and had to park quite a distance from the hotel.

Friendly welcome and shown to our room, provided with wifi access info and times for dinner. Nice size room (No.8), but lots of little unexpected steps, which could potentially trip one up. All clean and tidy, although some furnishings a little tired. Bath rather than shower and inexplicably the toilet is situated right beside a huge window that doesn't have any privacy glass! Granted there are curtains, but I have to question the hygiene of having curtains located so snuggly next to a toilet, in what I would consider 'the splash zone'. Plenty of hot water.

The dining room proved a disappointment - completely lacking in atmosphere and felt like a noisy canteen. The beautiful fireplace has been blocked, as the fire surround has been topped with a breakfast bar. Dinner service was good and the food was of a reasonable standard, but I don't understand having to select a dessert at the beginning of the meal. It was sad to see how this previously lovely dining room had been diminished - pleased to see the beautiful tessellated tiled floor is still in place though.

Sleep quality was good, but the pillows were woeful - flat pancakes providing no cushioning or support.

Anyway, sadly this Auberge is not what it was - although they seem to be very popular with Belgian guests. Going back a good few years, we used to stay here at least once a year and always enjoyed the quaint surroundings, cosy dining room and excellent food - sadly it's not what it was. We're not planning a return visit. 

Finally, we discovered after the fact that we were charged for breakfasts not taken - partly our fault for not checking the bill prior to payment, but equally their fault for charging for meals they must have known were not taken. End result 19Euros out of pocket.

Sometimes it's a mistake to go back .....

lovely small hotel tucked away and hidde. food was superb and staff were attentive and pleasant. Bar setting with water feature running through the bar added to the quaint nature. I would recommend this

Our 2nd stay here and it was even better than the 1st. Lovely room overlooking the stream and the food was delicious and the bar area cozy for an after dinner drink. Looking forward to our 3rd visit

Excellent again!!

Bags of charm in this quirky small hotel. Mill workings decorate the lobby, floors are somewhat uneven, but the character of the place and the idyllic remote location made us fall in love with it.
