On our way further south we chose Selestat for an overnight as an opportunity to explore an historic town in the Alsace. We couldn't have picked a better hotel to begin the experience - it is a building with a long and remarkable history, a lot of which is mirrored in the reception and dining areas on the ground floor, a living museum. At breakfast we were treated to a stories about the hotel and the town by the friendly lady who organised our breakfast. It is a must if you are travelling through this beautiful little town!

Selestat is a nice town in Alsace between Colmar and Strasbourg. There is a nice walking tour of the town. It is a good base for three attractions in the nearby Vosges mountains; the impressive castle of Haut Koenigsburg, the Montage des Singes where one can handfeed free ranging barbary macaque monkeys, and Cigoland, a zoo centred on the endangered stork. Regular buses run to all three from the train station. Combining these makes a good day trip. The castle is a quite impressive pink sandstone which has a very good audio guide, and the monkeys are very well trained and not aggressive. Hotel des Allies is a good accommodation option right in the heart of the old town with nice large rooms. The hotel restaurant is of a fairly average standard.

Although there was nobody at the reception and the person in the restaurant (who may have been the owner) seemed reluctant to speak to me (maybe it was language, but I'd done OK the previous few nights), when I got to my room - a long series of ups and downs with a heavy-enough bag - the room was very pleasant.  Like something from the 50's, but with good linens, lots of space, and a nice big bathroom.  So a mixed review here.  The town is great, and the location of this inn is wonderful.  Wifi worked in the room, no problem.  The restaurant is ancient, and it was fun to eat there just to say I had.  The food was good - I think the Rotary Club meets there, so you get the idea.  I thought perhaps I was the only guest that night, which made the long up-and-down schelp especially curious.  Location gives this place its value.

Wonderful historic hotel!

A good central location in the old town

Practical, good enough room above a VERY old restaurant

very charming!

After struggling to get our car to the hotel (thanks to small one-way streets in a highly pedestrianized city center), we finally arrived at the doorstep.  It took us a while to locate the reception (we tried the restaurant first but no one was there).  Apart from the parking challenge, the hotel was well-located in the center of the town, near to all sights in town.

Getting luggage from our car to the room was another challenge, as the way twisted and turned, going up and down.  This was due to the fact that the hotel was actually several very old buildings linked together through these twisting and turning corridors/stairs.  Our room was very spacious -- it was not particularly clean though and was showing its age.  The hotel was very close to the churches, and so one would hear bells chiming throughout the night and early morning.  That did not bother me, but might be an issue for lighter sleepers.

We were in the town during a very strange time.  We arrived on Sunday in the evening, and the town was practically empty.  It was difficult to find a place to have dinner but we managed.  It was no less difficult on Monday evening.  But on Tuesday morning, it was market day, and everything was open early and there were lots of people.  The hotel was nicely located in the middle of the action.  We had fun in the market.

The breakfast at the hotel was good.  It had a good variety.

Although there seemed to be only one person (presumably the owner) in the hotel most of the time, the service was good and efficient when you can locate her.  She was friendly and helpful.
