The property is an old home in the middle of a better part of Lilongwe. It’s much better than most places there.  It’s in a relatively safe neighborhood. As long as you don’t have an “American hotel” expectation you’ll survive.  Hotel is peaceful and quaint. Staff is nice.  WiFi will drive you nuts though.

A last minute emergency mean I had to cut a visit to Malawi short, and make the long drive from Karonga in the north all the way to Lilongwe (about 10 hours) with a 4 hour stop in Mzuzu. When we arrived at about 7pm, our rooms were ready and waiting for us.

We were welcomed by Maria, a very friendly and hospitable host. 

Rooms are spacious and clean, beds were comfortable. Air conditioning in the room was a nice treat after two weeks in the hot north. The shower was hot (almost too hot) but it was also nice to have after two weeks of cold bathing.

The restaurant was not functioning, we were told, but it was fine, as the area has many restaurant close by offering take away and even delivery.

Staff brought coffee to my room in the morning and offered to cook me breakfast.

The grounds are beautiful and calming. The price for this stay ($90 overnight booking through expedia) was some $40 lower than other hotels available in the area based on my quick online search.

I will certainly use Annie's again in my travel to and from Lilongwe.

Overnight ahead of Flight

This is a quaint guest house located in the safest part of Lilongwe. Ambassadors and Business owners have their residences in these blocks so it is a very secure area. Residents walk and ride bicycles thorughout the tree-filled neighborhood. It is not a luxury resort, but it is perfect for someone looking for a clean room, a hot shower, and a soft bed. My room had an Air Conditioner that worked so well I got too cold and night and had to turn it down. Workers are friendly and quick to meet any request. I would definitely stay there again. 

An oasis of safety and relaxation

Bed was comfortable, AC worked well, wifi worked well once we got logged in. Grounds are tranquil and staff are outstanding, will go above and beyond to help out and are really responsive. Nice to have the garden areas. A few small discrepancies in room (missing door handle on shower, hole in bug screen, etc.) and many items on the menu were unavailable, leaving the dinner a bit limited - though what was available was well cooked and delicious (though took nearly 90 minutes to arrive). Please note that you have to pay for all your drinking water.

Simple and homely comforts.

Very friendly and helpful staff. However, our room had defenetly a cleaning and ants problem. Even when they offered Airport transfer customer care is written in small letters. The reception was empty for a longer time so that there was no help available. For a couple booked there was only one towel. Breakfast was small. The house and the service  needed  more attention. What a pitty...

Sadly, reality does not fit the advertisment   

Wonderful staff. Peaceful gardens. Spacious cool room. Best WiFi we had in Malawi. After tough travels and accommodations that were average but expensive this place offered real value for money. Left Malawi revived. 

Your home away from home in lilongwe 

I have stayed here twice on business trips.
As far as location, cleanliness and friendly staff are concerned (especially the manager) - I have absolutely nothing to complain about.
However, given the cost (anywhere between 90 and 120 Euro per night) I would have expected FAR better facilities.
Breakfast was scarce and the breakfast "buffet" laughable.
The so-called bar and restaurant service is non-existant: the "menu" has only 3 or 4 courses of which half are often "off".
If you do manage to order something, better be prepared for a long wait so order in advance!
When I was there in May, the "bar" had ONE can of tonic water and no other drinks at all - no soft drinks, no beer, no wine. The only drink available was Malawi gin (using a couple of drops of tonic from the only can of tonic in the place).
Two colleagues who have since returned, have informed me that this time there wasn't even bottled water.
As far as the bathroom is concerned, I would expect at least two towels per person in a hotel that claims to be of "executive" standard.
All in all, I doubt if I will be going back, which is a pity because the place itself is very pretty and the manager very helpful, but for those prices I can find much better.

Absolutely not up to standard

I was expecting more from this hotel based on the website. However, the hotel was basic. While it was clean the condition of the rooms were poor. Breakfast was poor. At the moment Malawi has numerous power cuts. When we arrived the hotel had a blackout, their generator was broken so there was no back up power. One of the bedrooms in the apartment was crowded with furniture. The double bed took up most of the room up to the door so you crawl into the bed from the living room. There was an unnecessary desk and swivel chair in the room. It would have been better with a single bed rather than a double bed. We arrived at 6pm. The cook was not on the premises when we arrived and would be phoned to come in to cook a meal if we wanted dinner.

Disappointing

I spent two months in Annie's Lodge. The service was good, food was good and some of the rooms have a kitchen to cook your own food. Wireless and electricity were consistently there, and rooms were kept clean. The neighborhood is safe and I often went for walks in the neighbouring streets just before sunset. Very pleasant stay overall.

Once again, we were given a room which was not the standard we’d paid for (not sure why this happens to us – or is it just hoteliers taking a chance?)
This being Malawi, don’t expect much. Standards are low by any measure. Room is pretty much devoid of any kind of amenity – no safe, no storage cupboards, etc.  Shower was good.
Breakfast was of the Faulty Towers variety, horribly diluted fruit “squash”, South African carton juices, brown bread only, lots of eggs and not much else. Try the local Chembe tea – it’s very good.
Having said that, service was generally very good – excellent at times. Staff go out of their way to help with all requests. Anything that required fixing was done promptly and without fuss. Cleaning is prompt and excellent.  Our waiter Innocent was brilliant.
We did have a microwave, fridge, stove as we had booked a catering room. Had we known about the quality of the food, we would have taken our own stocks.
A word about the rapacious boating touts that harass you on the beach. They function as a sort of local mafia and so would rather go without than accept lower (dollar) fees. There is no genuine competition, just a relentless harassment for exorbitant prices. Unfortunately most people pay, so they get away with it.
