I spent two nights at this place and the first thing I noticed when I arrived was a small cage inside the courtyard with a cat meowing like crazy. I instantly felt sorry but hoped that this was only temporary and they would let it out later. I checked again later that day and the cat was still in the cage with nothing but two bowls, one was full of water and the other one full of feces. The poor cat didn’t have any room to move and was forced to sit on the metal bars of the cage, there wasn’t even something to sit or lie on! The next morning, the same situation and for the whole time I was there, this cat was held in the cage without once being let out. The staff didn’t seem to care. There is also a small dog kept in a cage in the back part of the courtyard. It is sometimes allowed to run around but spends most of its time also in a little cage. No one at this hostel seems to care about these animals. 

It made me and my boyfriend so sad to see these pets being so neglected, so whenever we could, we opened their cages and let them out and played with them for a little while. We also collected some cardboard and put it in the cages so that they had at least something to sit on.

I then spoke to the staff about it and they were laughing about my concerns. They told me that the cat can never leave the cage as it would run inside the restaurant and disturb the guests. I told them that this is animal abuse and that other guests from my parts of the world will be way more disturbed by that than by a cat walking inside a restaurant. They told me that I was the first person to ever mention that and that there’s nothing they can do about it.

I can’t believe that I was the first person to bring this up!! But I hope I won’t be the last. Avoid this place if you have a heart for animals. 

If you’re still staying there, please let these poor animals out of their cages once in a while.

Animal abuse - they keep a cat and a dog in small cages!

A bit hard to find. It is behind a cafe. Check in and out time is flexible. Bed was firm and comfortable. No problem with the sleep. The toilet was smelly. Sanitary drainage issue or could be thousands years of treasures below you :-). Not on busiest street but not far. It’s ok. 

Affordable and strategic location

The hotel is about 5 mins walk from the gate into the old town, it’s very well appointed. It is a small courtyard hotel with a great restaurant and nice (but expensive) coffee shop that serves FABULOUS waffles and good coffee.

The rooms are located off a pretty and quiet courtyard. If you stay here, choose your room; they are all very different in size and style: We wanted to go for the traditional room (when in China!) but we chose a bigger more spacious one. They also have modern rooms with western beds. Overall; I think they probably have a room for most tastes.

The staff speak very good English, which is a first for us in this part of China.

If you are staying for one or two nights and want to be in centre of town in an old courtyard hotel, I recommend this place.

A lovely traditional spot

N37°12'20.0" E112°10'34.7" The entrance to the hotel is now hidden by a newly build restaurant of the same name and café Migu Coffee on the corner of Xigeduo Xiang and North street. Hotel reception is inside Migu Coffee. To enter the courtyard of the hotel, walk to the back of the restaurant, pass the kitchen and open the gate doors to the courtyard. 

We chose this hotel for its Western style beds instead of concrete kang-beds. Our small room 110 in August 2017 was on the (ground) first floor in the left corner of the courtyard. It had a soft and excellent sleeping Western double bed, television and air conditioner. Wi-Fi in the room is adequate but not streaming. For fresh air, we opened the window above the front door, only it to be barred by piping. When we closely inspected the room, we noticed bad repairs and lacking maintenance.

The bathroom is an unfinished DIY-attempt. Without shower cabin, the warm shower flooded the bathroom. Cleaning was substandard. Toilet paper need to be deposited in an open bucket that smelled unpleasantly after a day. Alternatively, is it the sewage drain? We kept the bathroom ventilator running and closed the bathroom door to keep the smells out. 

Migu Coffee serves Western breakfast without coffee for RMB28 each morning. Chinese breakfast for RMB18 was not available. When ordering coffee along breakfast, you double the price and end up with an expensive breakfast. Except for Chinese music and books, Migu Coffee could be a coffee bar anywhere on the planet. Within Pingyao, Migu Coffee has three branches in exactly the same interior style with attached hotel. 

Staff spoke English (a first for us in this part of China) and were helpful. Unfortunately, they did not accept our Visa credit card when paying for the room. We booked the room for €44 per night without breakfast through their English website, which is managed by Booking dot com.

This Rough Guide favourite hotel with sister hotels in Beijing and Datong offers hostel quality for hotel prices. We liked the western bed, but overall it was too expensive for the quality on offer.

Hostel quality for hotel price

Let me first tell you that I highly recommend this hotel/restaurant. 

It is within the old city walls, about a five minute walk from the north gate. It is on a very busy street. It does not look like much from the outside. But don't let that fool you. Wonderful on the inside. 

They only accept cash at the front desk. Credit cards are only used to book the reservations. 

The staff is highly attentive to any and all needs. We had to leave early but they made sure we had a complete breakfast first. 

The courtyard in back is really charming and quiet. The door to our room does not look like much. But the room is excellent. Large, bright, working A/C, large bathroom. No TV...even better. Great WiFi. Quiet, quiet, quiet. 

The restaurant is absolutely fantastic. This is not your typical hotel restaurant. Everything is fresh and wonderful. Some interesting English food descriptions on the menu. Try the fried chicken. You won't believe it. 

We would definitely stay here again.

Highly recommend 

We stayed here for one night on a pass through pingyao. First impression was that it is quite cute- the receptionist speaks moderate English and is keen to help,the courtyard is nice especially at night. However, if you get the rooms on the right as you walk in (just after the entrance gate) ask to change... Or pay more.... Cause they are much much smaller, a bit smelly (dampness? Sewer smell? Who knows, but it's too much to bear and be comfortable in). 
We moved to another room with a more modern bathroom and space on both sides of the bed (other type only has one side of the bed)... And it was much better. 
Overall good, but not sure I would stay here again.
