H81 Hotel

We travel quite often to Ha Long bay in the summer time and H81 is always our first choice. We like the market near by where we can get the fresh lobster then ask the restaurant next to the hotel cook for us. The room is clean and comfortable and so the bathroom. It takes about 5 minutes to get to the beach though. Would definitely stay here again during summer next year. 

Stayed here one night after Halong cruise, very pleasantly surprised, only paid £9 , had to re arrange booking date twice because of storms, no extra charge, high standard of cleanliness, WiFi OK , staff helpful , booked buss to Hue for me ,no commission, would stay again liked the town, friendly unpretentious, not, would recommend.

Best small hotel in Ha Long bay

good clean value

Decent and clean accommodation in a busy part of town. The room had air con, en suite bathroom with shower amenities. Plenty of eating options around the hotel. Small convenience store and pharmacy nearby. Good for a night's stay. 

The staff were friendly, although most didn't speak English. They helped call our cruise company to coordinate the pick-up point. They also got us a cab to go to Hon Gai pier to catch our cruise. 

One thing to note - they kept our passports when we checked in. I had read about this in the Vietnam travel forum so this was not unexpected. While checking out, we forgot to pick up our passports (yikes) but the staff traced us through the cab company and we raced back to get them. I greatly appreciate the staff for doing this.

Value for money

cheap clean, really hard bed, centre of town, Wi fi a little slow, air con Fridge. We decided instead of booking the cruise from Hanoi we would travel down on the bus book a cheap mini hotel for a couple of nights book the 4 or 6 hour cruise around the bay directly from the harbour. Cruise cost us 200 000 Dong each including entrance to national park. On our return to Hanoi we heard all the horror stories from tourist who had done it the normal way booking a cruise from Hanoi, the bed bugs, cockroaches rats they did exactly the same trip round the bay we did and then spent the night in the harbour just off shore. All in All good value for money for a couple of nights.

I stayed here on 12/08/2013 with 2 other travellers in a triple room paying a total of 21 euros for the room. On first impression, the hotel does not set the greatest tone with several children running around the lower floor and reception area. Once we had been taken to our room on the third floor I assumed the noise would be less and seemed so. The room is decent, the bathroom is ok (need to think of logistics of shower but i think this is a SE Asia thing and not specific to this hotel). The tv is good quality and the aircon worked fine. The main issue was the noise at night - right on the main road and the children were noisy - screaming and blasting music. 

My next part of this review is probably a general review on ALL hotels in the Bai Chay area with regards to their tours around the nearby islands. FIRSTLY, my advice to all travellers wanting to visit Halong Bay/Cat Ba Island,  in all honesty, I would avoid the tourist trap that is Bai Chay! I would either arrange package deals from Hanoi for the two day boat cruise or go to Hai Phong and sort something out from there. DO NOT BUY ANYTHING FROM YOUR HOTEL IN BAI CHAY. I bought a "4 hour boat cruise along Halong Bay" for 420k dong($20) for a trip that other paid less than half for. The Bai Chay Harbour is a locals dream for duping gulliable tourists like myself. I bought this tour from my hotel, he said he had arranged an early tour for me. I got to the pier for 11am, was put on one boat where my hotel guy then left me. I waited 15 mins to which I then was (without explanation) moved to another boat, where I had to wait another 45 mins.

Whilst waiting, my original boat sets sail with another tourist onboard (i am assuming this is one of those 'private deals' e.g pay 500k per hour). I asked my boat owner why we hadnt set sail to which I got blank expressions. We then depart (an hour after schedule), to which I am asked for 50k extra to compensate for the fact the boat is not full. I REFUSED TO PAY THIS AS I FULLY BELIEVE THIS IS A SCAM. 

Another family decide also not to pay(until the end of the trip). we are then taken to two caves and a fishing village. This only lasts about 2 hours and no5 the 4 hours as quoted. We complain and are told as we did not buy fish from the foshing village the boat trip is only 2 hours as the other two hours would cooking and eating time. Throughout this whole ordeal the captain is continuously asking us for the 50k extra to which I explain to a Vietnamese tourist that I refuse to pay this extra surcharge. When asked why, i explain how much my ticket costs to which she is incredibly shocked and tells the captain that I will not pay on my behalf in Vietnamese. His first reply is I have to nake a living and she can afford it. She argues on my behalf and funnily enough he seems to let me go without paying the extra... a long story simply to say Bai Chay is ultimate scam central. Avoid at all costs. If you are desperate to visit Cat Ba, go the Tuan chan island way LIKE the locals.
