Mahi Mahi Beach Villas - Espiritu Santo

First time at Mahi Mahi, stayed in 2 Br Villa out the back with my partner and 13 year old daughter. The Villa quickly felt like our own beach house and we self catered via the Luganville markets which were a highlight - never have, and never will taste organic produce like that again. Paradise! The beach front Nakamal was perfect reading spot.

The location in Santo is 15 minutes from shops / Luganville on beautiful clear waters, white sandy beach, quiet and restful. Only ever a few other people swan at what felt like our own private beach. Large tides without waves so good for Canoeing and exploring. View of the next large Island is directly in front. 

Jim and Linda were welcoming and hospitable, even drove my partner to the Dr when he was sick and allowed us an extra day to relax when our flight was delayed by the  frustrating Air Vanuatu.

It POURED with rain the whole week except for our last day (cyclone in Fiji apparently) so it was enforced relaxation which added to the sense of escaping somewhere else. I found the rain quite beautiful at times, frustrating at other times limiting our ability to get out and about. Our drenched clothes didn't quite recover from mouldy smell during horse trail ride, which was beautiful nonetheless. But it was an experience of the tropics in full flight.

A main highlight was the driver (Jim organised) - Tusty, a Ni-Van local who was very generous and tolerant of our numerous questions. The life of coconut trees was super interesting. Tusty drove us up the coast, into town, out to dinner.  He gave us a direct sense of local community life and I would highly recommended hiring Tusty for the week.

Only limitations were the rain, which can't be helped, and Air Vanuatu who caused random whole day flight delays upon arrival and return. 

If you factor in the extra time for Air travel I would say Santo, and Mahi Mahi, offer a genuine relaxed escape away from tourist trail and connected to local life in the most beautiful of places.

We visited Luganville in December and we spent a wonderful time (over 2 weeks since we got our diving license with Allan Power) with Jim & Linda in one of their great Beach Villas. Linda & Jim are wonderful people and it was really like living together in a family - all helpful, friendly and always a smile on their face... Villa and service (self-catering) are perfect (the others have already provided all the details in their reviews here) and Santo Island is the perfect island for wreck diving, snorkeling, relaxing on the beach and enjoying a cold Tusker beer with Jim, trips to the wonderful Port Olry, Champagne Beach, Blue Hole, Freshwater Tour, South Pacific WWII Museum, Local Market shopping or just a SUP Tour and many other possibilities ;-) 

So a big thank you to Linda, Jim, Tusty and Delma for the wonderful time we had the chance to spend with them - will be back soon ;-)

Great time at a fantastic place :-)

We have just returned from our 6th trip to Vanuatu. We choose to stay again at Mahi mahi villas with the amazing hosts who now feel like family Linda and Jim.  We stayed in villa 1 and friends stayed in villa 2. The villas are immaculately clean , we were given breakfast on the first morning which was yummy fruit platters , smoothies and bakery treats . 
The rooms are self catered , which we love , so meals we ate out others nice to enjoy the setting and a home cooked meal. To buy food we went to town ( 15 min drive away ) and the main grocery store LCM had heaps to choose from and well stocked ( note we couldn’t buy alcohol on Sunday ) and the local market was amazing , it changes daily with different stall holders ( bring lots of small change here as most things are $100 vatu.  
 We loved the nakamol on the beach. 
We had the best time and of course will be back ! Loved exploring the blue holes , a waterfall and port orly. 
The hosts Linda and Jim are the BEST and are always available if you have any questions , they have been in Vanuatu for 10 yrs so their local knowledge is exceptional . Seriously this place is the BEST for an incredible relaxing holiday in paradise. 
We love santo for its beautiful mix of relaxation and adventure . Santo has amazing beaches, great swimming and snorkeling ,it’s safe and friendly and then if you want adventure there’s  heaps to do such as waterfalls , blue holes, fishing , horse riding .

My husband and I stayed at Mahi Mahi in November 2019. We stayed in Linda and Jim's amazing 1 bedroom villa. So spacious and clean with a little kitchen and an outdoor BBQ. Totally self sufficient. Jim and Linda are wonderful hosts, almost like family.. The bonus was an outdoor private shower. The surroundings are so beautiful, gardens and view to the sea. Our last night was just the most amazing night with our hosts, crayfish, wine and a laugh together. Forgot to mention that Steve's glasses fell apart, Linda and Jim went out of their way to try and fix his glasses. Awesome all fixed..Love their place.

Beautiful Mahi mahi

Just returned from our second stay at Mahi Mahi and wish I could go back tomorrow. 
 Amazing location, beautiful beach, water perfect loved the snorkeling.  What makes this such a special place is all the attention to detail and thoughtfulness; beautiful clean spacious rooms, lovely fresh linen,  milk in the fridge, breakfast for your first morning , homemade cookies in the room, free wifi, a wealth of local knowledge and as much interaction with the hosts as you want.  No attempt to charge like a wounded bull at every opportunity, so refreshing in this day an age.  It was just a pleasure from start to finish. Thank you Linda, Jim and Delma . Just Bliss

We can highly recommend Mahi Mahi Villas for either a relaxing or adventurous getaway. Jim and Linda were great hosts, nothing was too much trouble. Their Villa’s have everything you need, including comfortable beds and pillows for a great nights sleep. We can’t wait to return!!

Peaceful, relaxing, great service, beautiful accommodation, stunning location on the beach!

We just returned from our 4th stay at MahiMahi villas , instantly we felt relaxed and ready to enjoy beautiful Santo. 
After traveling around many of the pacific islands we have fallen in love with Santo. We love the untouched beauty of this gorgeous island. The people we have met are incredibly friendly. 
We love the location of MahiMahi villas being right on a magical beach. Only a short walk is a little blue hole , or if the tide is out you walk 300m out on the sand bank to a lovely deep spot , magic ! 
We hired a car so visited blue holes , went to a few local resorts/ restaurants for lunch. 
We love having a self contained villa, so we went to the local shops ( love that they now don’t use plastic bags ! ) and local markets so we then cooked in our villa. 
Jim and Linda our hosts are incredibly welcoming and have created something really special in MahiMahi villas , they are both the nicest people you will meet, they always make us feel so welcomed and right at home and instantly relaxed.
We have stayed in both villas now , this time villa 1 and it’s perfect for couples , love the outdoor shower !

We have already booked to come back at Christmas time.

Felt like coming home ! Instant relaxation

Mahimahi Villas on Tides Reach on East Coast Road on Espiritu Santo is in a stunning location and run by two very generous ‘locals’ Jim and Linda from NZ who came to Santo almost ten years ago with Volunteers Service Abroad.  She volunteers at the local hospital providing newborn kits and he is on the tourism board helping develop local tourism and they are very knowledgeable about the island.
The stretch of white sand beach that Mahimahi villas is on is sublime. The water is very tidal - you can walk out to the reef when the tides out and kayak when it's in. There are a few small resorts within walking distance that may or may not be operational when you visit (as so many places open and shut down randomly). At our time of visit the Barrier Beach Resort was in full swing (well we saw 4 people in residence and 2 people at the restaurant) but the next door Sunrise Bungalows had shut down and the newly emerging Oceania Restaurant (at the planned Black Pearl resort) a little further on was on the brink of closing. The Lope Lope Sports bar and bungalows to the right of Mahimahi was also closed but none of this detracted from our experience which was peaceful and superb. We only saw 4 people walk past the beachfront cabana at our villa in 8 days! The beachfront cabana, 50 m from our villa, was a highlight and we had sundowners there every night and all our meals down there and read and relaxed and even played boules. 
The main mahimahi villa has 2 huge bedrooms with 3 king double beds and lovely louvered (fly-wired) windows to let in the breeze. There’s gas hot water and oven/cooktop and a fridge with freezer stocked with ice. The water which comes off the roof just needs to be boiled before drinking and they supply three 1.5 litre bottles which we kept topping up. The kitchen has tea and coffee, a plunger, sugar, salt and pepper, oil, frypans and saucepans, sieves and utensils. We bought our own wine from home (on advice from Jim and Linda) and that was a great tip as wine is average quality and expensive.  The small town of Luganville is about 20 minutes drive from the villas and the blue water holes and superb Champagne Beach another 20-45 minutes the other direction. So you do need to hire a car (unless you want to get a taxi or tour company to take you everywhere). Jim and Linda organised a Ute for us through Paradise Tours (be warned hire cars are v. expensive!!) who also transfered us to and from the airport. Mahimahi was in the perfect location, in a stunning setting and Jm and Linda delightful, helpful hosts that made our family holiday just perfect!

We just returned from our 4th trip to espritu Santo and once again stayed at Mahi Mahi villas. This place is fabulous, the location is gorgeous on a beautiful quiet beach , the rooms ( this time stayed in villa 1) are lovely, comfortable and well appointed. We enjoy the fact that it’s self catering, so went into town to the shops and markets and then enjoyed cooking in our villa. 
There are a few options for lunch or dinner our close by , we went to barrier beach once and also the new oceanic resort. 
The hosts Jim and Linda once again made our stay so memorable and fun, they are incredible at what they do and I would highly recommend a stay at Mahi Mahi villas. We actually rebooked for Christmas time already.

Paradise with incredible hosts

Mahi Mahi offered such a beautiful getaway, with stunning and comfortable accomodation.  Our host Jim was so incredibly friendly and welcomed us kindly.  He was full of experience and knowledge about Vanuatu, and offered to help us in any way he could in order to maximise our stay.  The beachfront was metres from the door and the scenes were amazing as the tides changed the lagoon.  We hired a car for the week to make exploring easy, and loved checking out the sleepy parts of Santo at our leisure.  Santo is a slow speed place that suits chilled out, relaxed people who can make their own luxury vibes in an off-grid way to just enjoy the beauty of nature. Mahi Mahi was a perfect compliment to this and we couldn’t have been more thankful to Jim for his hospitality and kindness while we were there. We will be back!
