Very good and comfy apartments in a spectacular spot just steps away from lovely mini-forest neighborhood. A walk away from stores and 1/2 a mile walk from Playa Mansa beach. Outdoor and indoor pool, tennis court, kids area, barbecue parrilla. Excellent resort for families or small groups

Roosevelt's Stay

My girlfriend and I went to PDE off season in July and had trouble finding economical lodging on short notice (within 2 days of arrival, ~$100/night budgeted). Club SDE was available, and we took it. On the good side:

-These really are "apartment" rooms - full kitchens, very well stocked, nice living room areas, couches, etc. 

-Bathrooms in great shape, many towels, clean, etc. 

-View from the 20th floor was incredible. Windows opened nice and wide. 

-Although the staff didn't tell us about it, there is a huge rooftop area that you can access, with 360 degree view of the region

-Housekeeping does a great job - nice people, too. Rooms fairly soundproof - we ran our stereo without bothering anyone. 

-Downstairs heated swimming pool and ping pong were fun. 

-Location is a good distance from the main action in PDE, but that can be a good thing. Nice residential neighborhoods fun to walk to, easy to access beach.

-Directly across the street is an upscale market (compare to Whole Foods in USA), which is very convenient for an apartment - style hotel stay. 

-Buses run up and down the street in front, though you need to spend a bit of effort figuring out the schedule. The front desk is very quick to arrange a taxi (always within 2 mins), but like everything in Punta Del Este, they are absurdly expensive ($10 for a 5 minute ride...)

Downside: 

-ELECTRICITY CHARGE ON CHECKOUT!!!!!???? Are you kidding me? An extra $35 for power, with nothing stated in advance regarding this. The apartment had 4 electric heaters, which we used a good bit, but this still felt wrong to me. I would have gone to war with them over this charge, but we had a boat to catch...

-Staff speaks no English. I speak decent spanish, but Uruguayan Spanish is a challenge vs. Mexican-American Spanish

-Front desk staff could have been more friendly. Juuuuuusssst....a little curt with me...never seemed to happy to see us. 

-Internet not terribly strong or reliable (although there are routers on every floor by the elevator)

Overall, pretty solid place. There were numerous hotels closed due to off season, and don't know how this place would stack up when PDE is in full summer swing.

Mostly great...

I struggled concerning what rating to give this place and decided it would be better to give people fair warning. We selected this place because it was the only thing available in Punta del Este on our RCI exchange list that would allow more than four people. We had five in our party that included our three adult children.

Regarding the location, it was not so easy to find even though it was on the main drag (Av. Roosevelt) from Maldonado to Punta del Este. Fortunately, I had gotten a tip from reading the reviews from the RCI site that "12.5" refers to the bus stop, and was not a street address. Even so, we passed it up once because the name of the place does not stand out from the street view. On the plus side, it was located adjacent to a very nice, vast neighborhood full of middle to upper middle class homes. But there are few commercial establishments located nearby. Punta shopping is a little bit of a walk (about 3/4 mile). The closest thing is Devoto across the street and a couple tenths of a mile down the road. It was quite a nice place but it was all there was within an easy walk. All of the action down in Punta del Este was quite a distance away so you really need a car if you are going to stay here. The nearest beach was 1.5 to 2 miles down the road.

The exterior appearance of the building was not particularly attractive if I am to be quite frank. It looked a little run down. The lobby was below ground level and was, however, actually nice enough in appearance. There was a pool table or two in a room off to the back of the lobby. My sons made use of these and said they were in good shape.

The folks at the front desk were very genial but did NOT speak even a little bit of English. Fortunately, my son is fluent in Spanish so he was able to facilitate for us and the fact that we can understand a few words from our rusty high school experiences was also helpful. So we got by.

We got to the room and our first impression was mixed, though more negative than positive. The room, especially the sitting area, was spacious and appeared clean. Except for a couple of silverfish that showed up during the week (which can happen anywhere), it seemed to be bug-free. Our room had two bedrooms and the three sofas in the sitting room were quite soft and wide. One of the sofas served nicely for a bed for my daughter for the week. The balcony was a nice feature as well as we made use of it throughout our stay.

The kitchen was in bad need of updating. Upon examination of the appliances, we were a bit appalled. Firstly, a couple of them had cords with frayed and exposed wires. The worst aspect of this, however, was that the stove did not work at all. There was at least a microwave that allowed us to warm our food and facilitate an attempt to make eggs in the morning. But we were limited in what we could do with the facilities as they were. This was a significant problem given how expensive it was to eat out in Punta.

The rooms were cleaned every day which was nice as that is unusual in establishments such as this. The bathrooms, while in decent shape, were also in bad need of updating. The towels were replenished every other day, which worked well enough for us. The water temperature was a bit difficult to control. 

We were there in off-season so we had no problem with room temperature control. However, in the summer, I could imagine the interior would be very warm on occasion without air conditioning.

Another issue was that there were absolutely not enough outlets. With the devices we had, we struggled to allow everyone to charge their PCs and phones. We ended up buying a power strip at Devoto to facilitate a minimal amount of convenience in this respect.

It is also noteworthy that the internet was only about 80% reliable. There were several periods that it was not functional. In cases like that, of course, the memory of the intensity of the disappointment during the non-functional times far exceeds the memory of normalcy when it was working properly.

The beds were very hard and caused a couple of family members some discomfort due to back pain. In addition, it was difficult to sleep thanks to some construction going on across the street which started at or before 8 AM each morning.

The cable or satellite (not sure which) TV offered a reasonably good variety of stations. There were a few English-speaking movies and shows here and there that provided some occasional evening entertainment.

One of the best features on the positive side was that there were laundry facilities available and...they did the laundry for us for a very nominal charge! This was a nice feature and perhaps the salient one that stands out as a positive.

The elevators were a little sketchy in their operation as some mornings various units appeared to be inoperable. While that was not a huge problem in and of itself, the fact that the alternative was a dark stairway that was somewhat unsafe due to trip hazards was, in fact, a problem.

This place has an agreement with the hotel across the street for use of their exercise facilities. However, there is an extra charge ($100 URS or about $4.50 USD) specifically for use of the treadmills! That's pretty lame. There was also an indoor pool but we did not make use of it.

One last thing to note was that there were extra charges applied that were significant (and annoying!). There was a charge for electricity for the week. For us, it amounted to about $35 - $40. There was also a parking charge of about $40 - $45. While that bought us an assigned spot in the gated garage, it still seems a bit over the top given the location and logistics of the place. Parking could and should be free as it did not appear to be a separate entity operating the garage.

Overall, this was not a great facility. If we ever make it to Punta again, we will not stay here. It might do in a pinch if there is nothing else available but that is about the best I can say. I suggest looking at alternatives before settling for this establishment.
