I stayed one night in the hotel. It is close to Old City and the Square of Independence in very safe area, but other interesting place in Montevideo are also accessible by foot from the place. There are many passed passing the principal avenue nearby.  The staff  is very kind, I enjoyed my conversation in Spanish with a guy called Diego and beautiful girls at the reception desks who provided all necessary support to explore city by my own. Rooms are clean, WiFi is very good and breakfast is rich and in general, service is excellent. If I return to Montevideo one day I would stay in this hotel again and I sincerely recommend it for those who travel on budget, definitely I am really satisfied for what I got for 40 USD.

Good hub for visiting Montevideo

My family and I got like 4 rooms. 
The pros of staying at this hotel are: neighborhood. Only. 
Cons: VERY OLD building and elevator (takes forever to take it), rooms are very small and the walls are not even painted properly, musty and cigarettes smell. Breakfast was ok, wi-fi does not work at the rooms... well, I WOULD NOT recommend it at all.

Good neighborhood.

Good localization but poor service. The hotel is old. Breakfast is average. Wifi signal is very erratic and poor. The price is ok and due to its localization it is rather convenient for a business trip .

it doesn't smell of cigarettes and it's clean.
Very handy spot to commence walking tour of old city or just to do your own thing.
The bus stop for Tres Cruces is very handy.
The rooms are spacious and do include a safe.
The bathroom is small with nowhere to put anything.
A continental breakfast is included in the tariff but we still thought $81 US was excessive.
The nicest thing about the hotel was the staff.........especially the senior Director.

Very Old Hotel.................but

I go to Uruguay twice a year, and I have been staying at the Balfer for at least ten years to the great dismay of my family, who would rather choose a fancy place in la Rambla. No thanks. This is a very comfortable place, clean, quiet if you know to ask for a room away from the street; very friendly, helpful and long-standing staff, I see the same faces every year; they have a garage around the corner, and they serve the best breakfast you can imagine... I feel at home, with people who truly care. The location is not fancy but it's convenient; there are good "bars" nearby where you can grab a decent meal if you're in a rush, "casas de cambio" to exchange  dollars for pesos, and you can always catch a bus or a taxi.
