We stayed one night at this place, because the location is close to the airport. Depending of the day time, it is plus minus a 15 min ride by taxi.
The best of the pousada is the website, but in reality it looks different. The whole place needs renovations and an update.Everything inside and outside is run down and it seems nobody really cares for the garden and parking area in front of the house and for the interior in the pousada. We did not sleep in the dormitories, we booked a double room with bathroom for 70 US $ which was not worth the money. The room was not inviting you. The furnitures were old, carpet was dirty, the bathroom was, beside being old fashioned, ok, but it smelt sticky. The path to the room was in a bad condition, luckely it did not rain. The welcome from the host was bad. The lady did not gave any informations and explanations about the pousada or the location, she just showed us the way to our room.
We did not have breakfast, because we had to leave at 5:15 am. For the money we paid, you can find better accomidations around. We cannot recommend this place.

Not worth the money

We booked this place a few hours before our arrival. The hosts (Mercedes and Raphael) were extremely pleasant and welcoming. Both have a very calm demeanor,  speak great English and spent the time to cater to our needs,  chat with us,  tell us about the city and offer useful advice. It was such a pleasure to spend the time with them. 

There is a range of rooms,  and we stayed in one that was beautiful : air-conditioned,  spacious,  with the private bathroom and it's own entrance. We also parked within the property. 

The neighborhood is calm and upscale,  although it is about a 20 minute drive from Montevideo proper (I would be cautious about staying here if you rely on city transport). 

Overall,  this is a great place to relax and recuperate after exploring the city. 


Whole - hearted recommendation 

I made a huge mistake by getting a room here. I wanted to be close to the airport for an early flight the next day. The price was right, reviews were good, so I said to myself let's click it. Boy I was wrong....First of all when I arrived there was no hot water. I guess they turned it on right after me checking in. They gave me a 1/4 soap that was cut off from a full soap.
Secondly, this place is old and outlets are placed awkwardly. My room had no table or desk and no chair. No cups. The wood floor had holes and areas where I thought it was an open pit underneath. 
But the worst was a dog barking all night and mosquitoes that were impossible to find in the dark decore. Well, if you enjoy staying at a theme park like Dracula's castle in Romania, like cold showers, have a good set of earplugs, your own soap, carry bug repellent then this place if definitely worth it. Otherwise you better pay more and get a good night sleep.
 

I only stayed here one night but could have stayed much longer if my travels allowed.  Mercedes is  
a lady with awesome expertise in all aspects of running a fabulous hostel.  Her skills in the kitchen are exceptional. The morning breakfast was the most beautiful display of breads, fruits, cheeses, meat and beverages that can kick start your day.  The fire in the warm and inviting living room was most enjoyable.  The home is secluded, quiet, safe and has lots of charm.  You will feel like you are in complete comfort with many beds and rooms to choose from.  The grounds are well maintained and outside enjoyment abounds.  Mercedes is full of knowledge, assistance and an absolute sweetheart.  The location is ideal to the airport with an easy bus ride to everything.  I will be back!

Hostel Portones de Carrasco is more like a Posada than a Hostel. The only reason it can be considered a hostel is because it has many very nice and comfortable dormitories for guests along with private rooms. It is an old, but very well maintained, local country house, secluded in the beautiful and very safe neighborhood of Carrasco. The living room has a large fireplace, and the thatched ceiling gives it a cozy atmosphere. It has a large and pretty garden full of birds. The house and area are very quiet and really appreciated when recovering from travels or the day out shopping or at the beach. It is a family owned and run business and the care and love put into the property are evident. All the things you would expect in a great hostel are here. Such as very clean rooms, bathrooms and common areas. High speed internet. A great breakfast included as well as delicious home made food upon request.

This hostel is a few blocks from most shopping, restaurants and beaches. If you have a car this is no problem. The bus line on Bolivia street is nearby and taxis there are plentiful. The hostel does have bicycles for loan or rent available if you do not want to walk. I highly recommend this hostel for your stay in Montevideo.
