This hostel has a fab vibe and is in a great location. There are several long-term guests who are all very welcoming and were great fun to hang out with. It feels safe and the layout resembles a house so it's like being at home. The bottom bunks all come with dark curtains which is a nice touch. The roof terrace is really cool and the perfect chill spot. I also really like the furniture and decor of the place too.

Great stay in Montevideo

Amazing environment and super nice hosts! It's really low price, but you could buy beer inside the hostel and have a good time with the people in there. The beds are pretty good, the bathrooms small but they suit your main needs. The breakfast is simple, but it's enough. Super recommended.

Cozy!

We only stayed one night but it was a nice little hostel. About 7 blocks from the main city centre and one block from the waterfront, it was well situated. There was a little supermarket called the Frog just on the corner of the road. The hostel offered a small cooking area, a nice terrace to chill and good wifi. The beds were comfortable but the showers were relatively small. Staff were friendly. Overall worth a stay. 

Ejidonia 

I got an eye disease staying in this place. There wasn't pillowcase and the blanket was dirty. The hostel smells like old stuff and is dark. The staff was friendly, but wasn't professional. Knowing the worse experience that they give to the guests, the hostel refund us some money, what is not enough to pay our dissatisfaction neither the eye medicine.

Disgusting and dirty 

So far I have stayed 2 times at the Ejidonia hostel for a total of about 6 nights. I plan to go back again. 

I knew the place was not the typical chain-type hostel by the bicycle bell they attached to the door for which is used as the doorbell!

There are several partners who manage the hostel. The first I met was Georgio. He helped me fix a plug for my computer when I arrived, which I really appreciated. 

One night another partner, Rodolfo, gave a little free guitar concert which was really nice. Another day, one of the other partners, Gustavo also helped me with something by making a little exception to their normal procedures.

I also met "X", and Florencia, two more partners or colleagues, who were both helpful and friendly. I even had a nice little chat with the cleaning lady from Dominican Republic one day in Spanish. All the others speak English. 

By the way, I recommend asking for a key if you like to wake up early or if you will go out late. The breakfast starts a little later than in some hostels - I think it was 9 or 9:30, so be aware of that. 

As another example of how flexible and relaxed they are, on the day I was leaving I had worked during the night. Since I am a writer I often write during the middle of the night.  That night I was up more than usual and was really sleepy the next day. Georgio let me sleep a long time past the usual check out time, which I really needed. 

Then I moved all my things our of the room and relaxed in the common area for a couple more hours talking to another guy from the USA who had been staying there for about a month or so. It is that kind of place. The kind where you end up staying longer than you planned. No one ever really seemed to be in a rush there and everything just kind of flowed. A lot of hostels have a homey feeling, but this one especially so. 

It also has a big roof patio where you can see a bit of the coast, with a hammock where I layed in the sun one morning. 

It is only about two blocks from the main "rambla" or boardwalk type sidewalk which is a main attraction of Montevideo. And it is just about two blocks from a big supermarket. And only about 4 or 5 blocks to the main street, 18 of July. 

It is in an interesting neighborhood called Barrio Sur, or South Neighborhood, which is under transition from old single family homes to new high rise apartments and office buildings. For me the area seemed very safe and there seemed to always be people on the nearby streets.

I also noticed a big fireplace in the common room which it looks like they use during the winter. Cozy is a word that comes to mind. When I was there they also had one resident cat, just in case that makes a difference to you one way or another. 

I forgot to mention that I had a bike with me and they have a storage space for at least a couple of bikes inside the hostel. 

One more interesting thing is there is a tiny shop right almost right across the street where you can buy the basics like eggs, bread and milk. It has some wooden benches outside where the local men and maybe a taxi driver or two congretate and talk. That is a very Uruguayan thing to do so you get an additional feeling of the local culture, which I am afraid is slowly changing with the new building projects. 

I recommend walking around the nearby streets just to get more of the flavor or the district. There is also a large cemetary about two blocks away with some very old gravestones which I think were of the rich early colonists so that is a bit of a historical place too in my opinion.
