Atlantida is a seaside resort town first planned and developed from about 1911 onwards, so many of the Hotels and dwellings were constructed between about 1920 and 1950: Hotel Rex is one such Hotel.

The hotel is situated adjacent the shoreline of the river plate, and for the three days that we were there, a fresh breeze was blowing in from the sea, and a wide ocean panorama was clearly visible from the rooms balcony at the front of the building [ 1st floor].

Upon entering the Hotel, you find yourself in a time warp: almost reminiscent in fact of Jaques Tati's film Las Vacaciones de Monsieur Hulot [1953] without the swinging doors to the kitchen. The decor is very unusual, consisting pale mauve curtains, and light lemon table clothes.

All the staff went about their duties in a competent fashion with the minimum of fuss.They were all courteous and helpful. Continental  Breakfast served in the dining room was quite adequate, but not quite up to five star pretensions.

The Hotel was old, but clean. A wide verandah outside at ground floor level provides a very spacious area with plenty of deck chairs to take the view and enjoy the fresh air.

The bed gave very good support for rest, and the foam pillows are an asset for anyone, like myself, who suffers from allergies. I had no problems at all in this place.

The ensuite did not possess good ergonomics though. The bidet was in front of the washand basin, and you have to sit a bit skew-wiff on the lavatory because it is too close to the shower. There were other little annoyances in this department like the ensuite door being unable to close , and the balcony shutters which do not have securing fittings, so they have to be kept open by propping a deck chair up against them if you want the air to flow in.  

The door key to the room takes two turns to lock and unlock; again an old locking system, and one that can be a puzzle to get the door open until you get used to the vagaries of the key fitment and the two turns.

generally though, the charm of the Hotel is that it retains it's character in a prime position, and puts you where you want to be beside the sea for relaxation. 

Bring a good book and your walking stick.

Actually we ended up not staying in the Rex. the locacion is great,and meybe its a fun place in summertime, wehn it must be teeming with guests, but for a low season visit it didnt serve its purpose. the rooms are tiny, really, at least the ones they showed us.
maybe you dont mind, because you will be out all day, but why pay 100 dollars for a shoebox? The breakfast room seemed nice enough, though, and yes, it is just across the road from the beach,but we didnt feel to stay.felt somewhat gloomy.

nice location but claustrophobic rooms

We stayed at the hotel for 1 night in March. 
The room is very worn-down and the hotel seems like everything stopped back in the 30's. 
The location is very nice - right next to the beach, but because of the primitive rooms and a lousy breakfast, we can only give this hotel 2 stars.
The staff was ok-nice, but very slow; paying with a creditcard took 15 min. 
Wi-fi is not available in the rooms, and the picture on their homepage showing a room doesn't look like the one we had at all!

Nice location, but worn-down hotel

Location was excellent, accommodation was frugal but clean. Architecture and ambiance was great. Loved the "galeria" and the view of the beach. Staff was friendly, but not in your face. Great value for the location. Breakfast was excellent. They only serve buffet breakfast through high season tho. Spoke some english, which was helpful.

Old Charm and convinience

We stayed at the Hotel Rex in Atlantida, Uruguay for 2 nights in May 2011. It was one of the few hotels that were open or even bothered to respond to our queries for accommodation.

This hotel is located on the beach within walking distance to the centre of town. There is off street parkng. When we arrived, it seemed to be all closed up and shuttered and I had to ring to get someone to come to the door. Adolfo could speak some English and he was helpful (when we could find him). The building is multi-storied and I think we were the only people staying there on one of the nights. The room was really small with twin beds and the bathroom was not terribly inviting.  Not enough room to lay our bags out. The windows were shuttered and hard to open.

We were told that to get in and out of the building we needed to unlock and lock the front door to the place ourselves. The lock was so hard to operate it became very frustrating. Also, there are bars on the exit doors and you cannot push them open  - you need a key.

Being a safety manager I was not very impressed by this bad fire risk, so we walked around the building to work out what piece of furniture we could throw through a window if there was a fire. The extinguishers that I could find were hidden behind other items.

Breakfast we were told was not served until 9am. It was just awful - a rock hard piece of toast that I thought would break my teeth - but my husband did say the coffee was okay. On the 2nd day we decided not to bother waiting around for breakfast.

The place seemed deserted and we could not find Adolfo when we wanted to ask any questions or get an extra pillow.

I could not help but keep singing "Hotel California" the whole time I was there.

I do not recommend this hotel.
