The General Francis Marion is a wonderful old hotel restored to its former glory.  Right in the middle of downtown Marion, within walking distance of several restaurants and shops.

Great ambience. Restaurant needs better awareness of customers.

Parking is tight behind the hotel- the parking places are narrow - should be widened.  Breakfast is good - liked making my own waffles.  Room 302 is a little tight. But hotel is thankfully very quiet.  Bed takes up most of the room - no closet.  There is a dark rubbery splotch ( gum?) in the carpet next to the bed.  I stepped in it barefooted by mistake .  It should be removed.  Carpet looks worn and a little dirty - it should probably be replaced.  The bottom of the tub/shower is clearly worn - it should rehabilitated or replaced ( looks shabby).

Lovely historic property on a street with small shops and businesses. Pleasant public roomsBed was very comfortable and room facing Main Street was quiet. Secure parking behind the hotel. Would be happy to stay here again. The breakfast bar was what you’d find at a chain hotel, so we ended up walking to a cute cafe down the street for a proper breakfast. Should be noted that there are 5-7 steps to reach the front desk, where the elevator starts.

Very comfortable beds, room was very clean, and the staff is fantastic!!Highly recommend this Hotel.

After overcoming some minor things like no heat the first night, not having ice machines on each floor so we have to ask the front desk clerks for ice, etc it turned out to be a unique and pleasant visit. The front desk staff are top notch. They were friendly and very helpful and offered many suggestions of things to do in the area.

Staying in an historic hotel was lots of fun. The details were well preserved, the bed was comfortable, the bathroom had a lovely porcelain sink and higher end amenities, especially the body wash. They offered a decent breakfast spread. Lastly, it's worth checking out the extra rooms on the upper floor of the lobby, i.e. the Card Room. Everything was beautiful. I hated to leave.

This is always our go-to when stopping in Marion. We stay here a few times per year. Always great service, nearby parking, and love the York peppermint patties on the  bedside tables. We had a comfy king junior suite with a fridge and microwave. Only wished the two arm chairs were more comfortable and that there was a heavier blanket for the bed due to the cold snap that passed through. This is the place to stay in Marion, especially being in the heart of downtown.

The Place to Stay in Marion

I love what the owners are doing with this place. A grand old building, I found it to be comfortable, quiet, and charming.That said, I was disappointed that the hotel has neither restaurant nor bar as listed on Expedia (or, if they exist, they weren't open the night I was there). And this is a small thing but, in a classy joint like this, it would have been nice to see the desk staff dressed in something more upscale than a sweatshirt. If you're trying to recreate a classic vibe, little things like that matter.

We stayed in the Junior Suite (King); military discount offered. We went to 4 hotels in Abingdon (all were full); the last one noted they were assisting FEMA due to Helene. We traveled a few miles to the Northeast and found the General Francis Marion. The hotel has a rich history, and it was a nice change from the typical hotels. There is no way to load the trolley with luggage unless you carry up the steps first; this could pose a problem for 1 guest. Nice tub, comfy bed, beautiful wood flooring, bed, and wardrobe. We couldn't get a refund for the trip back because we didn't have 24-hour notice. A crack in our windshield made it dangerous to stay so we wound up driving the entire way from Dover, Delaware to Paris TN (15 hours); it would have been nice to get a raincheck, but this option was not offered. We were not there long enough to have breakfast so I'm not sure what the breakfast bar is like. We had hoped to find out on the trip home. I would stay again and take the time to check out the eclectic and unique shops in Marion, VA. Very cool area. Wish we had more time.

The room was very comfortable and the bathroom was spacious. Housekeeping was a bit slow preparing the room and there were some very minor issues (one example, towel left hanging on the door from the previous occupant). The breakfast was more of a grab and go. Overall, I would definitely recommend and stay again for the great room rate and location.

This is an old hotel nicely renovated right in downtown Marion.  There is a little restaurant attached with good food- no alcohol yet but they said the license is coming soon.  I didn't notice any noise but it didn't seem very busy.  Comfy bed and everything very clean.  We enjoyed sitting on a cement balcony overlooking the Main Street. The only negative is a blowing heating unit which can't be controlled in the room- need to ask the front desk to change the heat. Would stay here again.

My only two complaints about your beautiful hotel are,1. You did not serve any proteins for breakfast (only carbs), so I ate breakfast elsewhere.2. You did not provide any way to charge my cell phone in your room.  Modern day power strips for about $10,00 have chargers built in.  Would be a nice addition to your hotel.
