Epworth By The Sea

Epworth is a true gem and we will certainly be back.  The grounds are incredibly well maintained and the natural beauty is astonishing!

Beautiful grounds and hotel. Staff was extremely friendly and helpful.

This was the first time we’ve stayed at Epworth by the Sea and it was amazing. The room was very clean and nice and the views were amazing! It was very peaceful and relaxing. We are already planning our next trip to stay here!

When I pulled up to this area, I was surprised it is a religious retreat area.  I am fairly religious so no worries there -- I enjoyed the chimes on the hour and half hour and periodic hymns played by the bells -- but I did wonder if I went to the right place.  But wowza!  The front desk was terrific and, when I had an issue with the room in the middle of the night, I received swift and wonderful assistance.  Great people, BEAUTIFUL campus to walk, and peaceful so one can relax and then hit the crowds of the beaches and shopping area for a nice balance.  I will be going back!

We loved the facility, grounds, room, view and staff.  However the bed has seen better days.

Very subtle rooms with a great view and the staff was very professional and friendly.

The campus is in a great location. It is on the water and has a great path that walks along the water. Beautiful to watch at sunset. It is a short drive to anywhere you would like on the island. The rooms are simple but comfortable. They do need small coffee makers though. It would have been really nice to sit on the balcony and watch the Sunset. That was a little dissapointing but other than that I was pretty happy with my stay. The price was very reasonable.

Great price

My hubby booked us for my birthday weekend. It was a stormy Saturday when we arrived, but we found our room to be clean  comfy, and dry. Our stay was in a King room at Turner Lodge overlooking the Frederica River.  However, the real draw at Epworth is not the rooms, but the awesomely peaceful setting, with its amazing, natural scenery and historic island architecture. Beautiful centuries-old live oaks, walking trails, a prayer Chapel, a museum, on-site meeting rooms, the beautiful Frederica River, and for the more adventurous--group activities  like wall climbing, zip lining, etc., are all available to guests. Although I am not Methodist, as a Christian, I was delighted to learn that Epworth is affiliated with a major Methodist organization. Because it's such a beautiful place, we weren't surprised to see a bridal party preparing for some very memorable photos. Totally worth the drive and the price was a fraction of what some other Golden Isles resorts charge. Definitely plan to return!

Great birthday weekend retreat!

Amazing view of the sunset from our balcony.  Great views of the river. Clean room, great place to take a nice walk if you want on the property. On the negative, the toilet doesn't have a lid so when you flush (it's a super powerful flusher) water squirts out of the toiler onto the floor, etc.  I found myself flushing and running!  Also, you're a quick 10- 15 minute drive to restaurants, beach, etc. on the island.  We'll be coming back again....maybe with a lid.

We took a trip to St. Simons Island for our first getaway after being cooped up from Covid.  The island is an  easy three-hour drive for us from Hilton Head Island.   

We have a particular interest in the St. Simon Trilogy books written by St. Simons  historical novelist, Eugenia Price, and wanted to visit island locations she wrote about.  We scored a 'two-fer" when we discovered Epworth By The Sea, a Methodist conference center, built on the grounds of the former Hamilton Plantation which Price writes about in the novel, "Lighthouse."  

Unfortunately, the free admission Moore Methodist Museum was closed because of Covid but we walked the peaceful  beautiful grounds.  Normally, the museum offers extensive information about Island History (St. Simons 360; Historical Video tour, Hamilton Plantation, Lovely Lane Chapel); Methodist History (John and Charles Wesley, Francis Asbury, Circuit Riders, Bishop Arthur J. Moore); Georgia History (Bishops, Missionaries, Women in Methodism); Nativities Collection (Over 85 international nativities); and, John Wesley Lecture (Free lecture on Thursdays at 2:00 p.m.).  A Christian gift shop and book store complement the programs. 

A short drive leads to Gascoigne Bluff, location of the important saw mills on the Hamilton Plantation of the Lighthouse era.  Two reconstructed tabby slave cabins adjacent to Epworth are worthy of a visit. They are maintained by the Cassina Garden Club. There is so much history on these grounds.

The Epworth grounds are large including an auditorium, motel, historic buildings and a beautiful view of the water.  Epworth was the name of the Wesley brothers', (founders of Methodism) home village in England.  Members of the Methodist faith would find Epworth by the Sea a treasure trove of faith.  I'm only sorry Covid prevented us from exploring the museum. 



Peaceful Epworth by the Sea

Absolutely the most scenic views, watching the tides come in watching the sailboats. Was very quite during my stay.The office personnel was very nice fast check in. Stayed during the pandemic Covid-19 everyone wore there mask. They did tell me the cleaning staff would not be at service on a daily basis was fine with me. Epworth by the sea was awesome.

This place is normally a Christian retreat but with covid-19 still lingering is was basically empty except for this hotel.  So nice and quiet and on the river.  Private balcony! Lots of beautiful areas to walk on site.We stayed 2 nights and there was no cleaning service.  I didn't  realize this and don't remember reading that it would not be provided.

First the the great views are worth staying here. The property is a little different because this is more of a retreat For groups than a hotel individual travelers. The stay was very nice as I said the views are great. Only downside is no coffee in the rooms only at the 1st level. But that wasn’t a problem for us.

If you are wanting a peaceful, safe and serene place to visit, I highly recommend Epworth By the Sea. When I enter through the gates, my stress level seems to go away.   The grounds are beautiful and it is such a beautiful place to walk.  I love going into the little chapel and meditating while there.  There are several types of accommodations on the grounds.  If you want a river view, I highly recommend the Roberson Inn or the Turner Lodge (this has balconies).  You can purchase meals at the cafeteria that is onsite. I think the best thing about Epworth besides the beautiful grounds are the employees who are friendly and will help you with any questions you have!  I highly recommend this place for church retreats or just getting away from it all!!!  The only thing I don't like about Epworth is having to leave.

A place of peace and serenity

We always stay at Epworth when we come for Pastor's School.  The Turner Lodge has been recently updated, and I would recommend it over the other options available.  Our balcony overlooks the river, and my wife loves watching for dolphins who feed up and down the river.  The grounds are beautiful, and a great alternative to the busy public places on the rest of the island.  We love it!
