La Pensione Hotel

Enjoyable stay, but you need to go knowing the rooms are small and you are paying for the location. With those expectations set you can enjoy yourself. I would not work from here, the rooms are a bit too small - there were a number of people on laptops in the courtyard the hotel shares with the adjacent coffee shop. Come as a tourist, just return to the room to nap or sleep. There is a lively farmers market outside on Wednesdays and Saturdays, and the nightlife all around is mainly trendier dinner vibes involving families, couples, professionals, older tourists etc, so no foolish drunks to worry about in the wee hours. With that said, expect some noise if your room faces the street. We had a room at the back and it was really quiet, we didn’t even hear the farmers market. No free breakfast but there are cafes for breakfast all around. Including a Michelin recommended place across the street (go when they open). You have to request housekeeping. I *think* you could walk here from the airport if you are fit, don’t have heavy luggage and the weather is good, otherwise it is a 10 minute ride. San Diego is a small town. By the way, Analise at the front desk (afternoon/evenings) was wonderful. She was so friendly and helpful to us. We really enjoyed our interactions with her and she exudes positivity. I came back in a huff one afternoon because of poor service at the ice cream store and just talking to her made me feel much better. Generally all the staff including housekeeping were quite nice.
