The Twilight Lodge

Stayed one night at the Twilight Lodge on a ski trip so that I could ski Hunter Mountain the next day.  Good basic accommodations, but not much more.  The lodge is the second floor of a small building with a Antique Store and the breakfast room.  The room I had was a small bedroom which had a shared bathroom in the hall.  The room was clean and comfortable with a small flat screen TV with cable.  There is no closet and very limited storage so a multi day stay would be challenging.  The bathroom was utilitarian and could have been warmer.   The only real issue I had was that the heat for the room was either on and very warm or off and too cold.  

The staff was nice and the breakfast was fine if nothing special, but there was bagels, cereal, OJ and coffee.

This place is way underrated.  We have a whole suite to ourselves: our own room, private bathroom, and a little living room.  The place is very clean, the bed is comfortable, nice AC.  The owner is soo friendly. The breakfast was good, the owner offered us a hot breakfast too.

I stayed at the Twilight Lodge for one evening planning to meet a friend the next day at his family's condo. The room was comfortable and cozy. Greg was a wonderful, friendly  and accommodating host. He even helped me to find a place to eat midweek during covid at 9 at night, then called me a half an hour later to make sure I had found the place okay. In  the  morning there was a lovely assortment of bagels breakfast cereals coffee and juice. Though the place is very unassuming and nothing lavish I would stay there again in a minute.

Stayed at Twightlight Lodge last night - very nice!!! Little old but that leafs to the charm. Felt like i was a guest in someones home. If you're not a fussy person, this us an adorable, great place to stay - oh and very affordable!

The first thing I want to say is: it's not as bad as the reviews state.  Come here with an open mind (and perhaps an extra sweater) and you might enjoy it very much.  I will tell you my experience and why there are all those negative reviews are out there.

When I booked my stay at the Twilight Lodge, I did it quickly through Expedia, because it was a less expensive option for New Year's Eve, and their website made the place look like a gorgeous, undiscovered gem in the Catskills.  When I arrived, it didn't seem like I was at the CORRECT Twilight Lodge.  Maybe I'd be directed to their main property???? 

If you've read the majority of reviews, you've seen that most people were very disappointed and downright freaked out by this place.  I can understand why.  It is so incredibly different from your typical American hotel, or even cheap motel.  American hotels/motels are PREDICTABLE; like fast food.  Even at the worst of them, you know what to expect.  

The Twilight Lodge is The Twilight Zone of accommodations: it can be disorienting and uncomfortable unless you decide to relax and go with it. There is no front desk or even a bell to ring for service.  Check in/out involves tracking your hosts down. There is no heat in the rooms (at least not my room); instead, there are space heaters.  I had to wear my coat, gloves and hat and stay under the covers for about an hour until it started to warm the room on that record cold day.  That said, the heater actually did a fantastic job and it got so warm in there, I had to open the window for a bit.

Then I remembered that I had, in fact, stayed in places like this before.  In Hungary, Poland, Lithuania, and Romania (the owners are Hungarian). They were very similar.  There just seem to be different cultural expectations and standards.  And I wouldn't even say that the Eastern European standards were "lower," just different. It's just that things like having only space heaters for heat, tiny rooms, family style tables at breakfast, etc. aren't unusual or psychologically challenging for them.  For an American--especially one who has not traveled much in these regions--it might seem bizarre and even unacceptable.  But for the open-minded, laid back, seasoned traveler (or anyone willing to just deal with differences and have a bit of adventure) it could be an interesting, even fascinating experience (which is how I eventually chose to look at it).  It's just a place to spend the night and it was VERY CLEAN, FRIENDLY, GREAT BREAKFAST, WIFI, AND THE ROOMS WERE SMALL BUT CUTE AND TASTEFULLY DECORATED.  And Barbara's antique "museum" (open only Saturday and Sunday) is fabulous for those who love foreign antiques mingled with random weirdness.  This is a family business, and it feels like you are staying at someone's gramdma's house...in 1990s Eastern Europe.

So, I recommend it because it's an experience and, if you look at it with curiosity and an open mind, not at all a bad one.  But do bring ear plugs because the walls are very thin.  Enjoy!

Pleasant Surprise

The place is small and right on the main road, and there is no front office so be sure to call when you arrive. Yes it is a little old, outdated, sparse, and run down, but for the price the service is very good and the staff is welcoming. There used to be shared bathrooms, but because of Covid when we stayed they were only having one bathroom per room (though you may have to go in the hall to access). Close to Hunter Mountain and Windham (25 min drive) for skiing! And the included breakfast was a nice surprise! More like a HOSTEL than a B&B, so be prepared. The photos on the website show more furniture in the rooms than there really is. But it’s just a good place to sleep to then go on your adventures!

Value Stay Hostel!

The rooms were fine, you are sharing the bathroom so that’s a little annoying but we were lucky to stay there almost alone so it was fine. 
Breakfast was great(!) and location is very good if you’re with a car (about 10 min from the hunter ski resort). 
Overall- would come back mostly bc of price and good service!

Good for the price!

I would not stay here again.  Yes, it's like traveling in Europe and staying at a guest house.  However the room was not as clean as it should have been.  It had not been dusted in several weeks.  the curtains looked old and faded.  One set of curtains was floor length which caused it to hang on top of the electric heater.  This can easily cause a fire if left unattended.  Make sure the curtain is not resting on the heater.  The bathroom , especially the shower needed cleaning.  The heating situation is not optimum as there is no real thermostatic control.  You have to turn the electric heater on and keep adjusting the heater until you have it right for you, this could take ours.  There is a wifi except the wifi did not work.  It probably needed to be reset.  And there really is no one to contact about the wifi.  The proprietors are not very electronic savy.     They do not answer email.  They rarely answer their phone.  However I will say that Barbara is a really nice lady once you meet here, really old time person, hard working and very old country Hungarian.  And this Inn is difficult to find.  The sign is not large and it's a dark sign.  We ended up going past it several times.  GPS does not help up there as the signals are very weak.

Unique stay

I try to give most places the benifit of the doubt. I have found that people are just trying to make a living and do the best with what they have. Normally when i read reviews i take the best and the worst and figure the truth lays somewhere in the middle. This has worked for me and i have been pleased for the most part where ever i have stayed. 

That being said my review of the Twilight Lodge is based on my haste and lack of research when booking a last minute stay in the Hunter Mountain area This past weekend.  While the Twilight Lodge's website is not down right deseptive, it  paints a much more sophisticated picture then what the Lodge actually is. Who ever made thsir website must be given credit for an amazing job. While all the information on the website is there, you have to look and read carefully not to miss some ket information like the bathrooms are shared.  Like they always say, read the fine print. My mistake for being rushed.

My biggest issue is that this place is really more of a Hostel and NOT a Hotel/Motel that most Americans are familure with. The Gentleman that runs the place is from Europe and its natural that his idea of a Hotel/Lodge would be different then what is more common in the USA. The Twilight Lodge is more dormatory then anything else. 

Our visit-  

When we arrived it's obvious the place has seem better days. Out front is an old Land Rover that has not moved from it's spot in months if not years. All the doors are locks, no lights on and a hand written sign in the window directing you to go around back to aquire your room key. The house in the back is also rather run down and over grown and looks like its not occupied. Knocking on the door met with no answer. Several attempts at calling both phone numbers get no answer. One last attempt a young womans voice answered and seemed surprised there was a guest trying to check in and said the innkeeper would be back in 45 minutes. It was now obvious this is run as a part time business that only operates when someone makes reservations online.

After the 45 minutes were up we did come back. Still all doors were locked and windows dark. Went round back and was met by the Innkeeper. He seemed rather disorganized as if he did not get many guests.  He unloced the room and showed us in. All the rooms had door keys in the handles. The building was cold and drafty. Small portable electric heaters are provided. The heaters did not seem very safe.

Ok so we are open minded and thought what the heck its an adventure. So we tried to stay the nigth since we were already booked for two nights and having not found any rooms available closer to Hunter mountain. 

There is no wifi, the old flat screen TV only gets a very few cable channels and is dark and needing replacement. The room itself does have antiques in it but they remind you more of your Grandmothers house then nice antiques. If the room rates were half of the $110 a night and it was promoted as a Hostel i would have had a better opinion. Either way the website should be more clear with exactly what you are getting. 

We tried hard but the place gives you a slightly creepy feel. We were the only guests checked in that Friday night when midnight came we could not stay any longer and drove the 4 hours home in the middle of the night.

Maybe its just us, but it was an unsettling experience. The whole Hunter Mountain area seems rather run down and seen better days. Maybe back in the early 1980's it was a nice area. Or maybe during ski season the whole Alpine enviroment has a more lively vibe. But in early October on a rainey night it gives off a secluded, sad atmosphere. 

I have not asked for a refund for the night we did not stay. It would be nice if i was not charged for it, but i won't hold my breath. 

So all that being said, unless you like dormatory style, minimalist lodging at normal Hotel/Motel rates I can't recommend the Twilight Lodge.

Strange Place

The owner of this small B&B is very nice, but this was a swing and a miss!  The accommodations were rather old.  In addition, we could not use the hot or cold water due to the overwhelming odor of sulfur when you turned the faucets on.  We had to buy bottled water to use just to be able to brush our teeth.  We requested that they consider a refund of the fee we paid.  No response thus far.  Very disappointed!
