We stayed here a year ago when we were looking for a reasonably priced hotel close to Minneapolis - we planned to be out most of the day so just needed the basics for a place to sleep.  A year ago, we were pleasantly surprised by this place, so we decided to stay there again this year for a few nights.  It felt new and clean the first time — it looked and smelled clean.  Unfortunately it has deteriorated over the last year.  Most noticeably was the smoky smell in the lobby and in the hallways.  The first room we got smelled smoky in spite of the no smoking policy.  We asked to be moved and we were promptly given another room with an apology.  The second room was better - still had a little smell but it wasn’t smoke. The bed seemed worn out with a mattress topper of some sort on top, but it was squeaky and noisy each time we moved.  The tiny shampoo bottle we were given (1 bottle) was never replaced when the room was cleaned - luckily I had an extra with me. The tiny soap bars (2) were also never replaced so barely made it with one in the shower and one in the sink. The room looked clean, but didn’t feel as clean (if that makes sense).  This is a small, family run hotel - the family is very nice and we really like that aspect.  They put out many no smoking signs and they keep the outside looking nice.  It is a budget hotel for sure — still a better choice than the typical budget hotels - Super 8, Motel 6.  There is breakfast in the small lobby - we didn’t try it either time.  There are coffee shops close by as well as other options.  We like the general area and the family. But, we will look for a different option next time — probably a little further out.  

Repeat Visit

Convenient location, clean room with everything I needed, friendly staff. The mattress was amazingly comfortable, too. I feel like I received a lot for the price and it was far better than some budget chains I've stayed at (Motel 6, Super 8). I would definitely stay here agin.

Good budjet hotel

Nice accommodations. Just needed a comfortable place to sleep while I visited friends in town. Large room nicely decorated. Comfortable King bed. Included mini-fridge and microwave for my convenience, which I didn't use. Just a motel, no pool, small area for continental breakfast was adequate for my needs. Priced Right for the night. 

Away from home

We booked in last minute for a cheap overnight, and wound up staying three more days. For its price, the Wakota is very good value. Very clean and surprisingly large rooms, that include a coffee-maker, microwave and decent sized fridge. The bed was weirdly high - as a short person I practically had to clamber up to it - but it was king-size and very comfortable. 

As well as the bed, there was a sofa and a reading chair with ottoman in the room. Shower over bath in the bathroom and the sink was separate, which I liked because it made it easy to do dishes. There was a desk and chair which was okay to work at. The wall-mounted HD TV was huge and had a selection of cable channels, including HBO.

We didn't expect much from the free breakfast, but it was more than adequate, with hot pancakes, toast, cereals, oatmeal, a selection of danishes and cold hardboiled eggs which had been boiled way too long.

The only real downside was the smell after the cleaners came through (the cleaning itself was great). Not sure what sort of product they use but it stinks like rising damp.

For a budget hotel, Wakota is quite a gem and I'd certainly stay again.
