The Tiki Hut is a fave. but all the themed rooms are creatively decorated and very comfortable. The whole house and property are filled with art and sculpture that reflects the unique taste of the owner, Thorn. Not to be missed!

We stayed in the Bombay room; using the outside bathroom is no biggie.  BEST BREAKFAST!! Angela is amazing! We will be going back as much as possible.  We felt so at home here!! Amazing people; will forever remember the care and consideration put in to this charming place!

Great room, wonderful location. I found the owner to be fascinating and enjoyed talking to her.. Very nice ambiance and a little exotic with the camel in the front yard. I loved the road it was located on.

What a unique place. A great place to hold a small wedding reception. The manager  and staff are very friendly.  It is very peaceful and relaxing atmosphere.  The decor is unique!!
We had booked most of the rooms for our wedding party!

1.  Background & details of my visit. 

1.a.  This was my first time to stay at Casa Thorn. I found it by searching for hotels in Islamorada on TripAdvisor.   I booked my room by contacting Casa Thorne directly.  The only other property I considered was the Pines and Palms resort.

1.b.  I stayed there for two nights on the weekend prior to the Independence Day holiday 2018.

1.c.  During my previous two visits to the Florida Keys, I flew directly to Key West and either walked everywhere or took a taxi.  This time, I flew to Miami, rented a vehicle, drove the length of the overseas highway and returned my rental vehicle upon my arrival in Key West.

1.d.  I spent one night in Key Biscayne.  I dined at Tutto Pizza and Pasta (dinner) and La Nouvelle Boulangerie (breakfast).  After I checked out, I toured the Cape Florida Lighthouse (Key Biscayne) and Bird Sanctuary (in Tavernier on Key Largo).

1.e.  I spent two nights in Islamorada (Casa Thorne).  While here, I toured the Florida Keys History and Discovery Museum and History of Diving Museum.  I dined at the Marker 88 restaurant (dinner), Lorelei restaurant (dinner) and Bobs Bunz (breakfast).

1.f.  I spent two nights in Key West (Eden House).  This is a very nice, peaceful hotel; I would not stay anywhere else in Key West.  While there, I toured the Key West Lighthouse (again) and the USCG Cutter Ingham museum (again).  I dined at the Conch Republic restaurant (dinner), Pepe’s (breakfast), and the Two Friends Patio Restaurant (dinner).  

2.  Expectations. While traveling for business in the U.S. I am required to stay at a chain such as Marriott (Courtyard or Marriott Residence Inn) or Hilton (Hilton Garden Inn or Hampton Inn).  While traveling on vacation, I typically look for a unique, independent/”boutique” small-medium size hotel that is comfortable and clean with a professional & helpful staff with good amenities/services but not anything opulent.  

3.  Location

3.a.  Address.  Casa Thorn is located at 114 Palm Lane, Islamorada, FL.  It is located one block off of U.S. Highway 1. 

3.b.  Accuracy.  I plugged the address in to my iPhone; it guided me there with no mis-direction. 

4.  Parking. Parking is available in the front courtyard/driveway.  It accommodates six vehicles. I do not consider it to be friendly to large pickup trucks.  

5.  Hotel staff.  The innkeeper (Angela) was very cordial and helpful with recommending dining options and local attractions.

6.  Hotel grounds and aesthetics. The hotel is situated in a quiet neighborhood of private residences.  The grounds are very nicely landscaped (and well-maintained) with palms and other lush tropical plants.   

7.  Accommodations.  I stayed in the Morrocco Room.  This was the nicest room in which I have ever stayed.  

7.a.  Room.  The room is huge (approximately 20 ft x 20 ft.  It has a very nice four poster king-size bed.  My room was clean, comfortable, in a good state of repair and very tastefully decorated.  The décor is in keeping with the theme - I would consider the room to be opulent. My room had the following amenities: king-size bed; large screen TV (42 inches) with multiple cable channels; coffee maker, mini-refrigerator; microwave; free WiFi.

7.b.  Bathroom.  I would also consider the bathroom to be opulent.  I was very large (approximately 15 ft x 15 ft.  It has:  a large countertop with a raised-bowl sink; shower and huge Jacuzzi tub (approximately 7 ft x 4 ft).  There is a dimmer switch to add mood lighting.

8.  Pool and outdoor areas. The pool is rather small but always seemed adequate for the number of guests (there are five rooms). There were approximately four lounge chairs and one umbrella-table with two chairs.  There is an elevated sundeck with approximately four lounge chairs.  

9.  Breakfast.

9.a.  Hours.  I believe breakfast was served for a two hour period.

9.b.  Area.  If I remember correctly, there was seating for six people at two separate bar-top areas.

9.c.  Composition.  Breakfast consisted of:  quiche, eggs, bacon, toast, coffee, fresh fruit and juice.

10.  Nearby attractions in Islamorada.

10.a.  Florida Keys History & Discovery Museum.  5.6 miles south Islamorada, Florida on U.S. Highway 1 (in the Islander resort).

10.b.  History of Diving Museum.  4.6 miles south in Islamorada, Florida on U.S. Highway 1.

11.  Other attractions in the upper & middle Keys 

11.a.  Cape Florida Lighthouse.  80 miles north in Key Biscayne, Florida. 

11.b.  Wild Bird Rehabilitation Center.  6.5 miles north in Tavernier, Florida (Key Largo).

11.c.  National Key Deer Refugee.  61 miles south on Big Pine Key, Florida. 

12.  Attractions – Key West, Florida (87 miles south).

12.a.  U.S. Coast Guard Cutter Ingham.  Extremely nice museum ship; she was in service for 52 years.

12.b.  Truman White House.  Extremely well-kept quarters for President Truman, other presidents and high-level VIP events.

12.c.  Key West Lighthouse.  Extremely nice fully-renovated lighthouse and light-keeper’s quarters. Of note, they have the First Order Fresnel lens from the Sombrero Key lighthouse on display; if you have never seen one of these lenses, they are literally works of art.  This particular one is over 7 feet tall, over 6 feet wide and weighs over 6,000 lbs.

12.d.  Hemingway House.  Very nice renovated home with beautifully-landscaped grounds.
 
12.e.  Fort Jefferson (Dry Tortugas).  This is a spectacular fortification built 70 miles west of Key West in the middle of the Gulf of Mexico – barely anchored on a tiny key.   Construction began in 1846; it was never completed.  It covers 16 acres and was originally designed to accommodate 450 cannons.  The only way to access it is via ferry (not too expensive) or seaplane (somewhat expensive but well-worth it).

13.  Handicapped access. I am not handicapped but I realize knowledge of handicapped access is helpful.  While the room was spacious, I would consider that it would be difficult to make it through the house or through the gate in a wheel chair or scooter.

14.  Weather. During my visit (July 2018), the weather was as anticipated: 90 degrees Fahrenheit and very humid.  It did not rain during my visit but I believe it is quite common to experience brief, light showers.

15.  Clothing and equipment

15.a.  Clothing.   I wore Teva sandals, lightweight cargo shorts and lightweight collared shirts everywhere I went and it was completely acceptable - I was actually over-dressed in some places. I would recommend a wide-brimmed straw hat for anyone who will be outdoors for any extended period of time.

15.b.  Equipment.  I carried a small backpack everywhere I went.  It contained the following:  backup battery charger for iPhone/camera; insulated water bottle (ice water was nice to have while walking around); small travel towel (for sweat and after rainstorms); sunscreen; chapstick; sunglasses.

15.c.  Other equipment.  I frequently purchase artwork while on vacation and routinely take a telescoping plastic tube (typically used for maps and blueprints).  In this manner, I can carry them on my return plane ride without the risk of damaging my artwork.

16.  Photos.  I have not included any photos.  The photos on the hotel’s website and TripAdvisor are accurate depictions.  

17.  Conclusion. I will definitely stay here again when I return to Islamorada and enthusiastically recommend it to anyone.
