Our experience mirrored that of other reviewers: Penny and Tip are very friendly and helpful, the bed was quite comfortable, the location is outstanding for exploring downtown Hilo in foot, and sitting on the lanai screened in by palms is a relaxing way to start and/or end your day. The occasional baked treats and fresh fruit were an added bonus. No doubt we'd stay here again if we returned to Hilo! (Ask Tip about his years as a filmmaker.)

Our second visit was as much fun as our first. This time we booked three rooms and brought our family. Great fun to socialize together on the ferny lanai. The other reviews on this website say it for us - Tip and Penny go out of their way to welcome their guests, hang out, and give advice. We loved the banana bread, fruit and cookies, and appreciated the sample pack of locally produced coffee! Penny played the ukelele and invited us to join in, and caught a Coqui frog for us to see.Happy memories made here. Thank you, Tip and Penny!

After deciding between many choices of places to stay in Hilo, we chose Kamaaina Inn in downtown Hilo. This boutique hotel is run by a great couple, Tif and Penny Davis. They share so much aloha, and the stories of their lives and travels in Hawaii. They are two beautiful people, and it shows in the way they personalize their hotel experience.

They offer a few unique, clean, and modern rooms right in the heart of downtown Hilo. 
While the building is set downtown, their gardened lanai feels secluded and private. 

I would recommend this hotel for couples or singles looking for a retreat type of stay.

We really enjoyed our stay at the Kama'aina Inn. The rooms are clean and spacious. Tip and Penny were warm and friendly and wealth of information, but also quite entertaining. They made us feel so welcome. We were cycle-touring around the island. Just as we were about to get on our way, Penny came out with a bag of dehydrated bananas to give us for the ride. They were the best energy bars we have ever had!  If you are looking for a more personal experience in Hilo, this is the place for you!

Tip and Penny, owners and operators give new meaning to the words Hawaiian Hospitality!!  Tip is friendly and shared his favorite swim spot with us. Penny though is the star of this show. After only three days we left feeling like family. 
The room we had was comfortable and clean. Albeit a little noisy (street noise) during the week. 
Excellent location however. Farmers market, grocery store and our favorite restaurant ...Pinapples..all within a block walk. 
We were loaned beach towels and joined Penny for a local music event. Her knowledge of the history and fun things to do is extensive. We were even treated to a practice ukulele session by Penny in the courtyard which to us felt like a private concert. 
The chocolate factory next door is a treat, not because of the sweets but the people working there are friendly and informative. Had a wonderful time here. 

The Kama’aina Inn is run by Penny and Tip - who personify Hawaiian Hospitality. Every room has its own bathroom (shower, no tubs) and is airy and light. Super clean. Central covered lanai (patio) with fresh fruit, sometimes baked goods allows easy conversation with other guests and coffee out in the fresh air. 

Just steps from the Hilo Farmers Market, Hilo town and the waterfront.  All guests given a key to the locked entry gate so the space feels safe and secure.
