The Bamboo Room was a tranquil spot with expansive views of the ocean. We enjoyed the sound of the waves and birds with the warm tropical breeze. We even saw a pod of dolphins from the lanai during breakfast one morning! The parking is tight, but we were able to manage it in our rented Jeep. We will definitely plan to stay in the Bamboo Room when we visit Hilo again!

Our host & hostess were extremely nice and accommodating. We loved the kitty cat always freeing us. The view of the ocean & surfers was perfect. Able to hear the waves crashing all night long. The pool & hot tub were a nice touch for chilling on a relaxing afternoon. We had the suite which allowed for plenty of room.

If you are looking for a place to stay in Hilo look no further ! Hale Kai is true perfect B&B in town. It is right on the cliff above the ocean and all rooms are facing the ocean with their own private entrance from the terrace, meaning you will be able to enjoy these amazing views all along your stay. It is a little bit outside of town so it is super quiet and we greatly appreciated it. The rooms are very comfortable, modern, well equipped and beautifully decorated in a Hawaiian style. The owner is very friendly and wants to make sure you are enjoying your stay. He left us breakfast in our room for the next day when we would be out (because of Covid). While he lives above, his presence was unnoticed and our stay felt very private which is great. So much better than staying in a big resort or a hotel !

After leaving Hale Kai Hawaii, we went to a big condo complex in Kona.  It was fine, but we missed the personal touch we had gotten at Hale Kai.  There Maria prepared splendid breakfasts (fresh tropical fruits, pancakes or eggs, a different kind of sausage every day).  She and Ric provided us with excellent advice (written and oral) on restaurants and sights, starting with the 1 1/2 mile walk down the hill (and over bridges and past waterfalls) down to the beach where we had seen surfers and from which we could look back up and see the B&B.  It also was delightful to talk with our fellow guests--from Seattle, Minnesota, and Germany--at breakfast.  The whole experience was profoundly human.  For an inept driver like me, it was a bit of challenge to back up (and I do mean UP) out of the driveway and onto the street, but I managed it.  On our way to Kona we stopped at the Volcanoes Art Center and saw a magnificent mosaic, "'Ōhi'a Emerging from Lava," that Maria had created.  Hale Kai Hawaii is, itself, a work of art and of humanity.

This is a professionally run, charming B&B. Hosts Maria and Ric are most welcoming and helpful. Rooms with a view are worth a premium. Bedding and bathrooms are well presented and attended to. A communal fridge is very useful as there is none in the room. There is no AC, but it is not really needed. With a car there is off street parking and it is a short 5 min drive to Hilo. It is a quiet location apart from the waves! Breakfasts are tasty and include fruit and a cooked course, served on the upstairs verandah. It is modern in style and everything, including wifi works well.

Easy to find with GPS. Beautiful house and grounds.  View of local surfing beach and ocean.  Sunrise is unbelievable.  Tea and coffee at 7:30, fruit shortly after then breakfast at 8.  Food is delicious. We stayed 2 nights and had 2 amazing breakfasts.  Ric and Maria, but mostly Ric gave outstanding recommendations on things to do on that side of the island depending on what region you are going.  They even have a nice list of local attractions their favorite spots to eat and things to do in the welcome book.  It is an older house, there is no A/C (but you do not need it), screened vent like structures let air in and keep the sound of the waves going all night long.  We stayed in bamboo room, definitely most private room of the four.  Great big shower.  Fridge and freezer to use in common area.  Fans in the room help with temp control as well.  B & B's are not for everyone, but if you want to try something a little different, would definitely give this place a try.  Not too far outside Hilo either.  View is definitely worth the extra 5 minutes.

I have been to Hale Kai every year for the past 7 years. Ric and Maria are the perfect hosts and truly make your stay very special. Their local knowledge helped us get the most from Hilo and other parts of the island.

We have been very lucky to see plenty of whales. Being on the water is also very relaxing. Maria’s breakfast is a great send off every day. You won’t be disappointed and this place was the best on our journey.

Heaven on earth! An amazing place to watch the sunrise, have a gourmet breakfast and comfortable nights sleep. Close to many attraction in the Hilo area but on a quiet street with only surfers and whales as your neighbors. Rick and Maria are gracious hosts, that can help you plan your time on the Big Island. A hint ... no matter how long you stay, it is not long enough!

My husband and I spent 5 nights. This house has only 4 rooms for guests and 4 places on the parking ( 2 miles from Hilo). The view was amazing, to the ocean. All the time you listen to the waves. The rooms are down and have small terraces. We ate breakfasts (rather continental) with fruit ,upstairs on the terrace. The room had quite low ceiling, without air condition and it was a little bit stuffy.

View and location beautiful. Hosts very nice and helpful. Breakfast was tea, coffee, and local grown fruits, each morning, and different entries each morning consisted of pancakes, french toast, egg casserole, and sausage. All yummy. Room was clean and spectacular view. Bed was king and not as comfortable as we like ours softer. No Air conditioning, but fans helped. Shower good. Did not hear neighbors, but the frogs chirped all night. I sleep with ear plugs, so no bother to me. Would return. Two mile drive to downtown Hilo. Parking was easy downtown, so enjoyed staying away from downtown. Seemed to have alot of homeless downtown.
