Hale Kua Kauai Bed and Breakfast

Bill is possibly the nicest person we’ve ever met. We ended up at the inn based on a last minute change and it was the best decision we’ve made our whole trip. The property is breathtaking, the room was perfect, and we loved every component of it. We had wine by the fire with Bill one evening and already miss his dogs Bear and Cooper. We learned so much about Kauai and would highly recommend this location to anyone coming to Kauai. 

My 17-year old son and I just spent six glorious nights in beautiful Kauai in December. I was a little nervous because the rate was so incredible, but it exceeded all of my expectations. I loved that it felt like it’s own sanctuary to retire to after a day of exploring and it’s in the middle of a rainforest - how amazing is that? We could see the ocean from the lanai, and it’s just over a 10 minute drive down the hill to Poipu beach to see the turtles at sunset. The chickens and horses add to the charm, and the hosts Bill and Cathy really thought of everything - from comfy pillows and bedding to boogie boards and beach chairs. They were very sweet and there for any needs. Mahalo for the amazing stay and we can’t wait to come back.

I liked that the room is like a small apartment and very roomy.  Everything you need for cooking is included, neat and tidy, and clean clean clean.  Our room was upstairs and the view was fantastic.  Breakfast is not included, but it's an easy place to do your own cooking.  A perfect getaway!

We stayed with Bill & Cathy Cowern for 3 nights and loved the experience. We were in a cottage detached from the owner's main residence which provided us with independence throughout our stay. The views from the cottage lanai were unforgettable and it was relaxing sitting there and admiring the awe-inspiring views over the rainforest. At $155 per night, this was the best value accommodation we stayed at in Kauai where prices are beginning to get too expensive for most tourists. We would recommend Hale Kua to travelers seeking a more natural Hawaiian experience, far away from the touristy resorts further south in Poipu. Thank you Bill & Cathy for a memorable stay!

We stayed with Bill at Hale Kua for 6 nights on an anniversary trip.  We were in the newer Mango unit which is attached to the front of the house with its own private entrance.  The unit was set up as a little apartment with a living room with stocked kitchenette, bathroom, and good-sized bedroom.  The apartment was very clean and you could tell there was pride taken in the details.  There wasn't breakfast provided, but the kitchenette had a coffeemaker, toaster, and dishes which worked for us.  There was assigned parking which meant you always had a place to park.  The room had beach towels, and books about the island on hiking, wild life, and sea life.  Many homes on the island don't have air conditioning but it wasn't needed here as the mountain provided a cooler elevation and a nice breeze at night.  Bill was friendly when we saw him, but the unit felt very private and all at the house mostly kept to ourselves.  We only saw other tenants once during our stay.  I will caution that the road up to the house is a bit rough (and the house hard to find in the dark), but you get used to it.  The room was very affordable for Kauai and value was great since it was clean and secluded.  Would definitely stay here again.

The location was great, away from all the busy tourist resorts and overpriced hotels. Set in the middle of a jungle this retreat was just what we were looking for! Woke up to the sounds of pleasant bird songs every morning. We have never stayed in a place with so much wildlife surrounding us, and spent many peaceful evenings on the lanai enjoying the atmosphere. The unit was very clean, and had a great cross breeze since is quite high up on the hillside. We had a full kitchen and washer/dryer. Best place we stayed on Kauai and would definitely come back here. Amazing hosts, and Bill is a wealth of knowledge of the local flaura - ask for a little tour of the trees in their property!

We had a super stay at Hale Kua. The Gardenia apartment is spacious and has all you need for a pleasant stay. You can even cook a simple meal. The location is tremendous, tucked away from the crowds but yet very central near the beaches and the canyon. Great value for money. Would definitely recommend this place to others.

It's home away from home. Best spot to stay on Kauai! On the south side close to everything, yet peaceful and quiet back at Hale Kua! Very clean inside with all you need to cook meals and relax, beautiful trees and landscape outside. We will be back here...

The best thing about the property would be its rainforest location.  I would highly recommend it if you want to experience the Hawaiian rainforest.  We enjoyed sitting on the lanai, sipping our wine or coffee, and hearing all of the rainforest sounds.

I found the website a bit lacking in the room information so I will share the following: the "Cottage" is behind the main house, the Gardenia Unit is within the main house.  The Banana Patch and Taro units (which appear to be identical) and the Coral Tree unit are all in the same building and are accessed via a different drive way than the main house (look for "A" versus "E").  I only mention this in case anyone (like us) arrives late and somehow misses the welcoming orientation by the hosts.

Even though it was very dark when we arrived we had no problem finding the location using the map provided (and driving very slowly). Driving a typical rental car we did scrape the bottom of the car on the road leading up the property (when coming down) at first but we learned how to maneuver to avoid this.

The Banana Patch unit does have a full size refrigerator and microwave. However, it does not have a full size range.  It does have a toaster oven and portable countertop burners.

The Banana Patch unit is right next to the Taro Patch unit but the way the veranda/lanai is laid out it is still very private.

Our unit had everything that we needed for a comfy stay.  We definitely would look into staying again if in the area.
