Our group of 8 spent a fabulous day cruising Poplar Lake on White Pine’s 10 person pontoon boat. The boat is well cared for and fully equipped. Rates are reasonable and staff is super friendly. We are recommending this half day outing to our local Grand Marais friends.

A friend had shared his vacation experience with our hockey group a couple weeks ago.  My son and I decided that a lodge room was better than a tent evening before heading into the BWCAW.  Had a wonderful evening in the Lodge.  Thanks

We brought our family up to White Pine Lodge for the second time, and we wish we could’ve stayed much longer! Allison and Chris have done a remarkable job of creating a space that feels relaxing and truly like a getaway, rain or shine. There are so many activities to do at White Pine Lodge that we didn’t even leave the resort this time around. If you want to go off and explore even more, there are plenty of places to go nearby to continue enjoying the area. Our kids enjoyed swimming, kayaking, and paddle boarding, and there was no shortage of bonfire chats and crisp, relaxing mornings. This is hands-down, our kids’ favorite place to camp, and we will be coming back year after year for as long as we can secure an opening!

It’s always risky booking a stay somewhere you’ve never been before, but we got lucky with White Pine Lodge. My husband and I and our dog, Louie, stayed for five nights in Poplar Cabin #6. It was clean, cozy, and nicely decorated. The king-size bed was comfortable and there were two cushy and inviting chairs positioned overlooking the lake. Each morning, we were greeted by birds singing and an occasional loon call. 

In the mornings, we sat on our private dock and drank the complimentary coffee from the Loons Nest and most evenings we were able to watch the spectacular sunsets on Poplar Lake. During the day, we’d drive up the Gunflint Trail to find hiking trails. Honeymoon Bluff was a short hike with beautiful views. The Magnetic Rock Trail was a little more difficult and muddier, but it was only a few miles. We enjoyed exploring the Chik-Wauk Museum and Nature Center, hiking through the woods, and up to Blueberry Hill. After hiking, we’d take advantage of the canoeing, paddleboarding, and kayaking at the lodge. The artisan pizza at the White Pine Pub & Restaurant was delicious and Allison made my half with only parmesan cheese. What a treat!

Chris, Allison, and Clarence (the adorable lodge dog) were friendly and helpful hosts. They went out of their way to make our vacation special. If you’re looking for a family getaway that offers peace and quiet plus some adventure and outdoor fun—White Pine Lodge is the perfect place for you! There’s so much to do on the Gunflint Trail, we already booked our stay for next summer!

Allison, Chris and Clarence are great hosts. Our cabin was perfect - everything we needed. It looks like they take a lot of pride in their lodge, cabins and grounds. I recommend White Pine as a great place to get away. 

White pine is straight out of a Hallmark movie! The property, cabins, and main lodge are so very beautiful. We stayed in Cabin 5 and enjoyed our amazing view of the lake. Don't miss the chance to have a fun experience in Northern MN! Chris, Allison, and Clarence are very such wonderful lodge owners. The cabin was filled with all the must-have's and Allison's pizza at the main lodge is incredible!  

The new owners are some of the nicest people you’ll ever meet and so talented. The place is beautiful and we didn’t want to leave!! I would recommend spending some time in the main lodge- several neighbors stopped by in the evening and it was so much fun meeting and getting to learn about their lifestyles up on the gunflint trail.

I’ve stayed at White Pine on many occasions. The accommodations are always clean, cozy, and comfortable. Pizza and service are delicious and friendly. The lodge great room is so beautiful. The fireplace is big enough to walk in. They have a crackling fire going every day. The atmosphere is very north woods, I hate it when my stay ends..I’ll be back.

We had a wonderful time at this lodge and were impressed with Chris and Allison Short and the lodge dog Clarence.   We were traveling with the parents of Chris Short's childhood buddy Dan.  Best stop during our trip to Northeast Minnesota.

First time visiting Big Bear Lodge on Poplar Lake. The cozy lodge and cabins provide a secluded relaxed experience conveniently located near skiing, hiking and dining. The owners: Allison, Chris and Clarence the dog will make you feel right at home and the homemade pizza is a must try. Will definitely be coming back!

Big Bear is the perfect Gunflint Experience

The cabin was well appointed (more and better kitchen equipment than most we've stayed in) and pleasantly decorated with an abundant supply of nice dry firewood.  The lodge is comfortable with a huge stone fireplace that we enjoyed while eating the wonderful hand-made pizza.  Chis & Allison are very friendly and when I asked Allison if they had any candy in their gift shop, she said no and then ran upstairs and brought some peanut butter cups from her pantry to satisfy our sugar craving - so nice!  Plenty of options for snowshoeing routes right out of the door.  Their dog Clarence is quite friendly and will play fetch as long you are able to throw the ball.

Friendly Owners, Great Pizza & Nice Cabin!

Big Bear is one of our favorite places to vacation.   Chris and Allison are excellent hosts.    Both are attentive to meeting the guest's needs.   Our truck would not start, and Chris went above and beyond to get the needed supplies to get our truck working.   We love staying in the cabin overlooking Poplar Lake.   We spent one day following the Mail Run dog sled race.   Excellent cross-country skiing and full moon hikes.  Try the warm mulled wine.

Well managed, beautiful property, charming.

What a refreshing change from the cold and arrogant attitude of the previous owner. Chris and Allison offer a pleasant and welcoming atmosphere for ALL. The Lodge is warm and comfortable, as are the cabins. Even if you are not staying at Big Bear Lodge, you should at least stop in for delicious pizza and refreshing beverage or two and a visit with Chris and Allison. Their enthusiasm for sharing the lodge with you will impress.

Refreshing Change

Chris, Allison and Clarence (the best Golden Retriever ever) were excellent hosts and we loved our MEA weekend at Big Bear Lodge on the Gunflint Trail!  The lodge rooms and cabins were cozy, well-equipped and comfortable and the artisan pizzas were on point!  There is so much to do during the day - paddle boarding, pontoon rides, fishing, canoeing and kayaking!  Then take a jump in the cold lake and warm back up in the sauna!  Spend the evening by the lakeside fire or grab dinner at one of the great nearby restaurants.  Whatever you do, you’ll be sure to love your time at Big Bear as much as we did!
