We love the Canyon and come every year.  This was our first time to stay at Phantom in a cabin.  Running water, a toilet and electricity???  Sheer luxury - for those who usually stay at Bright Angel camp and remember bucket flush.  The cabins are basic but feel like so much more, considering where they are.  The hiker's stew itself is worth making the hike and the staff love the place and it shows.  It is hard to leave here with anything less than a big smile and great memories.  This is my favorite place in the world.

LOVED our stay at the Phantom Ranch, and cannot say enough good things about it. We stayed there as part of an REI-guided trip (highly recommend) in early February 2024, and it was an absolutely wonderful experience. Weather was perfect for hiking, though parts of the trail were muddy, and we did run into some snow close to the rim on our hike out. The surroundings are magnificent, of course, and when it wasn't cloudy, the night sky was gorgeous as well. 

We stayed in a 10-person cabin (#8), which was rustic and spotlessly clean. There were two rooms with a door between: one room with 2 bunkbeds, the other with 3. We were pretty close to the shower house, which on our incoming day ran out of hot water once, but it replenished fairly quickly. We were there two nights, and I had two wonderfully hot showers. The Teva sandals I brought to wear in camp served me well there.  

There is a cold-water sink and toilet in the cabin, [TMI incoming] but we had a rule of "No #2 in the loo," which made sense for our group. The other toilet option at the Ranch is a pit toilet on the north side of the property (see accompanying maps), also kept very clean. It is perhaps one of the nicest pit toilets I've ever used.

Loved it.  Phantom Ranch is rustic, we had a great stay.  Staff is exceptionally friendly.  Food is tasty and family style seating with other hikers is fun.   We stayed in a cabin for four.  Cabin was clean.  Common area showers are clean.  In the evenings the canteen re-opens for a beer hall, which was a great time with all the other hikers.  Would definitely stay here again.

Phantom Ranch is magical. This is a once in lifetime experience to stay in such beautiful setting. After hiking 14 miles to the bottom of the canyon we were greeted with a warm welcome from Conor we offered us lemonades and ice teas. Our cabin was rustic, but perfect with comfortable bunk beds and a bathroom. If you are lucky enough to get accommodations at Phantom Ranch go!!!

Going to the bottom of the Grand Canyon was not on our bucket list, but it is now as a completed trip.  We lucked into 2 slots for a mule ride to Phantom Ranch and we grabbed it.  We changed our plans from going to Yellowstone to building an itinerary around the mule ride to visit Sedona/Grand Canyon/Antelope Valley/Las Vegas.

The mule ride was easier than expected for me but not for my wife.  We are both 67 years old, in good health. We don’t put ourselves in the “fit” category.  We do walk daily for an hour or so, and go to the gym 3-4 days a week focussing on resistance training. I’m sharing this to put my comments about easier than expected, in context. 

We rode mules Page and Payson.  The saddle was reasonably comfortable.  But since we had no experience riding horses, sitting on the mules took some time getting used to. My biggest issues was the direction of my feet in the stirrups - my ankles hurt. I felt better after about 30 minutes on the mule. I would get intermittent ache in my knees. Stretching my legs with my feet in the stirrups would provide some relief. When we stopped for a break at Indian Gardens after about 2 hours, I was surprised to be still feeling good upon disembarking the mule. It felt good walking and I felt normal after about 5 minutes.  It took longer for my wife.  Her ankle and knee aches got better but not completely unlike mine.  For me, the ankle ache, however, returned when I got up on the mule again.  This time too it lasted for about 30 minutes. 

We were 6 riders in the group.  The Bright Angel trail is dusty, rocky and fairly narrow at points, with lots of switchbacks. Our two guides (ranchers) - one in the front, one in the back, gave good commentary and would frequently ask everyone how they were doing, and if we needed anything. Throughout the journey, I felt very safe and felt comfortable enough to take a few videos on the iPhone.  The total journey lasted about 5-5.5 hours. I was tired by the time we reached Phantom Ranch.

I would rate our cabin “good” considering where it is located.  The cabin was air-conditioned and had running cold water, with a bathroom but no shower/tub.  The showers are communal, a short distance from the cabins, and had running hot and cold water.

The steak dinner and the breakfast were good, with plenty of sides.  Other than the steak, it was all you can eat - bread, salad, baked potato with all the fixings and bbq’d veggies, and dessert.

My wife is still talking to me. Translated,  it means she had a good time too despite all the pains and aches she suffered.

After a beautiful 6 hour hike down Bright Angel Trail we were thrilled to have a hot shower, a heated cabin, and delicius vegeterian chili.  The staff were great.  The hike up the next day took us just under 7 hours and was not as tough as we thought it would be.  BTW we got out reservation 10 days before our hike, we considerer ourselves very lucky! 

My trip to Phantom Ranch was on the back of a mule named Donk in  May of 2022, I was 67 years old at the time , once in a life time bucket list item i thought, the ride was amazing and my stay at Phantom was equally as amazing. they just reopened everthing  for booking this January so that being said im booked again for September 12th 2023. The 1st time at Phantom was so awesome that im bringing my so and grandson this time  cant hardly wait what an amazing place

The opportunity to stay here is so infrequent (especially with the upcoming closure for maintenance and pipeline work). If you ever get presented with the gift that is seeing the canyon from the bottom, I highly suggest taking advantage. Having any amenities like showers, food, AC/Heat, etc. at the bottom of the Grand Canyon feels super luxurious! It is a very comfortable way to take in the beautiful scenery. The hikes are not for the unprepared, especially up-whichever route you choose, but well worth the time and preparation! The staff was fantastic. What wonderful service in such a special place!

I took the famous mule ride down to Phantom Ranch, and it was extraordinary.  The mules are sturdy and in complete control.  The guides (one at the front of the caravan and one at the rear) were friendly and helpful.  The scenery is otherworldly!  Such a fantastic experience.  Takes several hours to descend, and then you arrive at Phantom Ranch for a couple hours before dinner.  The food is included (both dinner and breakfast the next morning).  The steak dinner is actually very good and nice quality - generous portions.  The breakfast was also surprisingly delicious and plenty filling.  I had a cabin with a king bed (some cabins have several bunks, but I reserved a cabin with a king.  The furnishings are charming, but everything is very basic along with a very simple water closet with toilet and sink.  It was clean and very charming (the cabins are about 100 years old, I believe).  The ride out the following morning was just as spectacular as the prior day.  This is truly a special, once-in-a-lifetime experience; though I would love to do it again!  (Stayed in late November 2021)

Riding a mule to Phantom Ranch was on my bucket list since the third grade, and at age 62 I finally managed it! Never give up on your dreams! The mules are extremely well trained and the wranglers are friendly and capable with your safety always first on their minds! I knew this was a once in a lifetime opportunity so I made a point to cherish every minute. My wranglers were Simon and Graham and they were simply the best. I was alone in our group of ten riders but I made new friends! Do not hesitate. Try to have this life-changing experience!
