I worked as the cook for a weekend retreat at Ismere/Iverley House and would strongly advise against staying here. I've travelled all over the world and stayed in some very basic places but rarely somewhere as badly maintained as this place.

When we arrived (on a chilly early November day) there was no heating on and the whole place was freezing. When we plugged in electric heaters in two bedrooms, they blew the fuses for those floors. The management told us someone would come about the heating the next day. They claimed someone had come at 8am, which was not true. When someone finally turned up that evening he got the heating back on but was reluctant to show us what he had done, claiming that it would all be fine now. We insisted. He showed us. The heating went off again two minutes after he left (and I can't help believing that he knew it would go off and had wanted to get out of the house before it stopped working again). When we fixed it as he'd showed us it came on for a few minutes then went off again. Several times. We ended up with no heating all weekend apart from open fires so all the bedrooms and bathrooms were freezing cold. We had no electric power at all for the majority of Sunday.

The electrical wiring is so poor it's probably dangerous - the drawing room still has round pin plug sockets and probably dates from the 1920s or 1930s. In the kitchen, circuits blow if you boil two kettles simultaneously from a double plug socket and the kitchen ceiling is in such a poor state that any competent environmental health officer would have a blue fit.Some of the kitchen equipment is in very poor condition - pans that have badly scratched teflon linings, rusty colanders etc. There were no chopping boards until we asked for some to be supplied. The chest freezer is mouldy. Some of the showers produce alternate bursts of cold and scalding water. I could go on.

What makes this place particularly unattractive is the attitude of the people running it. I wish I didn't have to say this but my impression was that they just don't tell the truth. They told us the heating was working when they prepared the property for our group. If that was true, why was the entire building freezing cold when we arrived? We had similar experiences multiple times. What they said simply wasn't credible.

Avoid this place - it's genuinely bad if not dangerous

I feel that I must  state that our recent planned two night stay with our grand child at Iverley house,was an unpleasant experience we wish not to repeat,we only stayed one night due to the discussing state of the room.

Iverley House a property described as a pleasant place and location to stay,resembled a derelict uncared for building in urgent need of attention.

Clearly some health and safety issues exist,example shaky and broken off in parts stair railing leading upstairs and the lighting in the entire building which went off leaving the place in total darkness.

Certain appliances in the Kitchen were filthy,such as the fridge freezer.There only two eating spoons in the entire building.

The Cookley bedroom,we were allocated,had no heating,a broken window,cobwebs in places,the shower providing low water pressure,and a dirty bath with broken hot water  
tap.
The wallpaper in the room was peeling of the walls,bed sheets and walls were stained and there was only one wall socket found in the room,also the wardrobe paper lining was coming away from  the inside and was dirty.

The bed was rock hard due to a lumpy mattress,as a result we had no sleep and experiencing lots of pain the next few days.

We only stayed one night.we were due to have our grandson with us the second night but refused to bring him to such a dirty disgusting place.

We had to drive home early as we couldn't find alternative accommodation. 
The house keeper we spoke over the phone,we found very unhelpful,he sounded drunk when we phoned him and didn't appear to know anything.

We tried to phone Russell,the owner,to talk to him about our concerns on several occasions but only got his answer machine.

I recommend to avoid this place at all costs!!!!.

We booked to stay here and when we arrived it was utterly filthy, with raw chicken out in the kitchen, rubbish in our rooms, previous occupants bedding strewn about and nobody to contact. We had no choice but to stay elsewhere (clean, predictable, friendly Premier Inn) as the place upset our children but they REFUSED to pay us back our £240 - that's THEFT (I still want my refund - I suggest you pay it to me - you failed to provide what we paid for - refund all of my money) and they do not deserve to take your money too - you have been warned. Don't be drawn by the quirky looking, historic exterior - it shrouds a shocking, dusty, creaky, unwelcoming pit of a place behind the door!

STAY AWAY - awful place, terrible people

If Trip Advisor did half stars then I would have given this place 2.5 out of 5. All previous reviews are correct about this place. It does have some major flaws and needs renovation urgently. For example, wall paper is falling off the wall, if you stay in the Hagley room you can hear the pump from the showers in the adjacent room and will be woken up immediately, you can’t have hot water without the heating being on which means the house is like a sauna on a hot day and some of the windows in the rooms do not open to compound this issue. These were only a few of the issues, there are lots more and would require a lot longer review. 
This place does not work by renting out individual rooms. If you do that then you will be severely disappointed. However. If you are in a large group and have rented the whole house then place is definitely adequate. The gardens are lovely and we managed to get hot weather on the days we were there so we were all out in the gardens most of the day. There are great pubs nearby. The swan @ blakedown is a must visit and the game room in the house is more than adequate. As there were over 20 of us it was a great time and we all had lots of fun and luckily did not let the state of the house bother us. The rooms were clean and the bed linen and towels were fresh. 
Our group gets together every year and the question would be would we hire this place again? I think we would not and having stayed at the Lodge in Canon Pyon the previous year you really do notice how much Ismere is in desperate need of repair. However, if you really do want to get away with family/Friends and in a large group and have no other options left then this place will definitely do for a couple of days.

It does the job

I stayed at this property because I was working nearby for a couple of days. I stayed in a room called Imsere which was very welcoming and cosy- which is what I look for in a hotel- the actual hotel was a bit hard to find and could do with some more signage and the fact that it was self-check in did worry me a bit however was well worth the stay as it was cheap and did the job!
