Stayed here one night to catch the ferry to Orkneys. Nice quiet country setting not
far from John O Groats , Dunnet Lighthouse ,and Castle Mey. Just a short drive to the Ferry Terminal. The Hostess was fun and pleasant to chat with,also very helpful. Great

Friendly welcome a very cosy and comfortable stay loved patting the cats and the breakfast was yummy. But if you don't like cats this maybe not the place for you. I loved the stay and would do it again.

With great trepidation I booked the place after reading some of the scathing reviews and I must admit we left with no complaints. The choices are very limited and because of the popularity of NC 500 the rooms are booked well in advance. The place is not easy to find but Sandie spent me a detailed direction shortly after booking and that was spot on. Possible to park the car close by and then bring the bags through narrow doors and through their sitting room. I did not feel unwelcome at all and the more time we spent, both the hosts warmed up towards us. Yes they are slightly regimental , especially about their keenness to get the breakfast order soon and sticking to their time table but it was not a big issue for us. The rooms were fine, although sound insulation and bathroom sizes were not great, but that is a common problem in old cottages. Hot water was available all the time and the water pressure was average for an electric shower. My full English breakfast was decent. Beds were firm and pillows comfortable. Cleanliness was quite good. 
Wifi is only available in the seating area. No TV. In the morning the phone lines are slow so the credit card payment may not go throught at the first attempt. 
I won't comment about the cats or the teddies as they didn't bother me the slightest. I have most certainly stayed in weirder places with pet monkeys sharing the food with me. Of course if you have allergy that's different. 
The cottage is in the middle of a farm and I spent quite some time with Donald The Muscovy Duck, other ducks and ducklings, highland cattle and the gorgeous Irish Setter dogs. 
Yes, it is not a brilliant place but it is perfectly acceptable for a break in your journey for a night and I'll have no problem in staying again.

Not bad at all for one night stay where choices are very limited

Cosy and comfortable

Nice,quiet place to relax.

We booked this accommodation because we needed to catch the Pentland ferry the following morning and this was nice and close. Also, we don't mind cats. 

I was a little worried after reading some reviews but it turned out to be a reasonable place to stay -  the water pressure in the shower wasn't great, probably because it is an electric shower. There certainly were many stuffed toys in the home and some smoochy cats - I have to say, it did indeed feel a little bit like visiting an aunt in the country. The owner was not gushingly friendly but I have no problems with how we were treated - she took us through the property, showed us our room, explained some aspects and asked us what breakfast we would like and told us which were the best places to find a meal and we found this very practical and informative. She also commiserated with us about the bad weather and told us it was likely to be sunnier the following day (and it was). The house seemed to be divided into areas for guests and areas for the owners, so we felt fine with being in the shared areas. 

Our room was fine. Quite spacious with a third bed and an ensuite. There was a key in the lock for us so we could lock the door if leaving the house. The pipes did make some strange moaning noises in the late evening, and the bed was on the hard side (could do with a foam overlay) but it was fine. The breakfast in the morning was good and we enjoyed a bit of chit chat with other guests and the owner.

Ideal location if catching the ferry!

We didn't receive a warm welcome (or any welcome really which was very unusual for the highlands as everywhere else was lovely and everyone warm).

The entrance door wasn't clear so we chapped at the window and the host opened it but no 'hello/welcome/how are you/Come in' etc. In fact the first thing the host said was she needed the breakfast order 'so she could get organised' even though we said we were trying to rush out to catch last orders for dinner (it was 7.30 and last orders was 8 apparently).

Was told to make choice but not given menu, was told she would get a menu but she just left us in the room. After a while we then went out she was no where to be found so spoke to her husband and had to ask him for the menu and gave order and then went for dinner. Told us the hotel stopped serving food in the next half hour so we rushed out and drove up as fast as we could but the information was wrong and the hotel continued serving food for quite a while after the deadline we had been supplied with!

On return from dinner at 9pm, we walked in (door was open) and said hello! No welcome again or hello back! No 'How was your dinner?' Nothing!!!

I asked for check out time and were told about 10 that was it, that was the extent of the communication!

Next day a different lady (a helper) did breakfast and she was friendly (thankfully) but couldn't put the credit card through (it was fine for other purchases and hotels before and after) so lucky we had cash.

The guy came out as the helper was seeing us out and I looked over and smiled (as you do) and no response, didn't say bye/thanks or anything!!! We don't like overly chatty hosts but there is a difference between that and not really being made to feel welcome.

Told breakfast 7.30 to 8.30 so we opted for 8.30 (quite early to end breakfast at I think) but we didn't actually get it to nearer 9 so sitting waiting for 30 minutes!

No wifi in room only in the 'common areas' which is really the couples conservatory which obviously we didn't want to use after getting little to no welcome. 

Also if you are allergic to cats you wont be able to use that as there are a few in the house. Some dogs but they were outside, not sure if they also come in. Roosters outside too.

Also didn't like all the teddies on top of the wardrobe in our room very eery, and again in the conservatory!!! Grandmothers décor. Very expensive for what it was and this was made worse but the lack of welcome or niceties!

No welcome, lots of cats, stuffed animals, dated decor and no wifi or tv in room!
